A suspect in the shooting of a security guard at the headquarters of a downtown D.C. conservative Christian lobbying firm criticized the group's anti-gay stance before opening fire, a source tells ABC7.
The shooting took place at the offices of the Family Research Council, which is located at 801 G Street, about a block west of the Verizon Center.
A source tells ABC7's Scott Thuman that the suspect is Floyd Corkin, 28, of Virginia.
Sources say Corkin walked into the Family Research Council and said “It’s not about you, it’s about the policy,” and then shot the guard.
The guard, who was shot in the shoulder, was conscious and breathing after the incident.
The suspect was taken into custody by the FBI and was being interviewed. Authorities later found his vehicle at the East Falls Church Metro station.
FBI spokeswoman Jacqueline Maguire said during a press conference that the injured security guard went "above and beyond" and hailed him as a hero.
In a statement posted, FRC President Tony Perkins said the victim worked with the organization.
"The police are investigating this incident," Perkins said in a statement. "Our first concern is with our colleague who was shot today. Our concern is for him and his family."
The Associated Press identifies the FRC as a "conservative Christian lobbying group." On its website, the group says it advocates "faith, family and freedom in public policy and public opinion."
The FRC is no stranger to controversy, even labeled by the Southern Povery Law Center as a hate group because of its stance against homosexuality. It's not hard to find the anger online, with one critic describing the group as having “ignorant, disproven, backwoods values” another adding, “it's why we fight.”
Many consider the FRC to be one of the most powerful religious right lobbying groups in the country and supporters see it as a bedrock of conservative, family principles.
The group boasts of its widespread influence in politics and just this week expressed its excitement to have vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan and possibly Mitt Romney as well, speak at its upcoming voters values summit in D.C.
The Family Research Council advocates conservative positions on social issues and strongly opposes gay marriage and abortion.
Perkins was an outspoken defender of Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy's public stand against same-sex marriage, which made the fast-food chain a flashpoint in the nation's culture wars. The Cathy family foundation has funded the Family Research Council.
"He's taking a bold stand," Perkins said after Cathy's comments were reported. "Chick-fil-A is a Bible-based, Christian-based business who treats their employees well. They have been attacked in the past about their stand. But they refuse to budge on this matter, and I commend them for what they are doing."
The suspect allegedly had Chik-fil-A materials inside the bag he allegedly carried into the building during the shooting.

A suspect is in FBI custody after a security guard was shot in the lobby of the Family Research Council, a conservative Christian organization based in downtown D.C.
Authorities are calling the guard a hero for wrestling the gun away from the shooter and preventing him from hurting anyone else.
“The security officer here is a hero, as far as I’m concerned,” Metropolitan Police Department Chief Cathy Lanier said. “He did his job. The person never made it past farther than the front door.”
The shooter entered the building at 801 G Street NW at around 10:45 a.m. Wednesday. He approached the front desk and said he was an intern. The guard questioned him, including asking what was in his backpack, which is when the shooter pulled a Sig Sauer 9 mm handgun from the backpack and fired at least one round, striking the guard in the arm.
Despite his injury, the guard gained control of the weapon and held it on the suspect. The security guard and others wrestled the shooter to the ground.
Authorities found two loaded magazines with 15 rounds each in the suspect's backpack, as well as Chik-fil-A promotional materials, NBC4's Jackie Bensen reported. The gun was purchased legally in Virginia five days ago, NBC News's Pete Williams reported.
Two law enforcement sources identified the suspect as 28-year-old Floyd Corkins, of Herndon, Va., Williams reported.
He apparently parked his car at a Falls Church Metro station and took Metro downtown, Williams said. FBI agents photographed a silver Dodge Neon at the East Falls Church Metro Station and had it towed from the lot, Bensen reported. Four boxes of additional ammunition was found in the car, sources told News4.
FBI agents and police also went to a Herndon home believed to be associated with the suspect. Agents appeared to be waiting for the residents to return home, and when they did, they were escorted inside their home.
Fast food empire Chik-fil-A has been at the center of a recent controversy over gay marriage after Chik-fil-A President Dan Cathy recently spoke out against it.
The Family Research Council promotes traditional marriage and other issues, lobbying against gay rights, abortion and embryonic stem cell research. It came out strongly in support of Chick-fil-A's president.
"Our first concern is with our colleague who was shot today," said Family Research Council President Tony Perkins. "Our concern is for him and his family."
The FBI and the Metropolitan Police Department are investigating jointly. They are working with the U.S. Attorney's Office to determine if this is a federal or local crime.
“We don’t know enough yet about him or his circumstances to be able to determine his connection to this group or to the business or mentally what he’s doing or thinking,” said James McJunkin, head of the FBI's Washington field office. "So we’re going to try to sort all this out, pull the evidence together, do as many interviews as we can, get it all together and sort it out.”
The guard is in stable condition.
Initial reports had indicated that the shooting happened at at the National Portrait Gallery.

WASHINGTON - A Virginia man has been charged in federal court in the shooting of a security guard at the headquarters of a conservative Christian lobbying group.
Federal authorities say Floyd Lee Corkins II told a guard at the Family Research Council, "I don't like your politics" before shooting him in the arm. The guard and others helped subdue Corkins, who was taken into custody.
He's been charged with assault with intent to kill and with bringing a firearm across state lines.
Authorities found a box of ammunition and 15 Chick-fil-A sandwiches in his backpack.
