Seriously are people really that stupid to believe that the average american should have a car. Ive encountered alot of people lately that believe students should be allowed cars while possessing government backed student loans.
Am I missing something here, Id love for a coherent reason to own a car but I can find none other than status symbol.
To keep this bodybuilding related my primary concern is the fitness of the masses. ::)

How do you get groceries?
I always live within a ten minute walk to the grocery store, well actually its crossing a parking lot at the moment. Even if I didnt itd be far cheaper to get a cab, once every 2 weeks.
next stupid question please.

$5+ a day in bus and trolley fairs in California, which equals about $200 a month. Oh, and 2 hours to travel 25 miles with transfers and all, because there are NO FUCKING DIRECT ROUTES!
Now, please die!

California is expensive no matter which way you choose to live. But seriously the transit in the states is the shit, I get that you need it because your cities suck, but that isnt why having a car makes sense, thats because you have no choice.

My parents offered me a car, I did not take, because I would have to be slightly less righteous when trolling, and because it wouldnt benefit me. This is a real question, other than living in a shitty city(which I dont), I cant see why anyone would ever need a car.

WTF are you talking about?? What a dumb ass thread!
1. I own a car because my school is a 20 minute drive from where I live. No direct Bus routes. It takes me 20 minutes to get to school in my car, it would take me over 2 hours to get to school on a bus.
2. When I grocery shop, I usually get a large single bag of groceries. Too heavy to carry or too heavy to bike. Also buses don't run late at night when I do my shopping due to my school and work schedules.
3. I often take trips out of the city to visit friends and family. Taking a bus or a cab to do this would be far too difficult and pointless on a cost basis.
4. What do student loans have to do with anything? Students get money, which they must pay back anyway, thus they shouldn't be able to drive cars? That's the dumbest thing I've heard today jackass.
5. Having "No choice" in having a car or not IS A REASON why it "makes sense". Tell me how, in a rational coherent manner, why not having a car makes sense if you MUST have a car to function? ::)
6. I agree, transit systems in America suck. One more reason to have a car.
7. I own my car, paid it down. Paid 1,300 for it and put thousands more of work into it over the years. It isn't pretty but it gets me from A. to B.
8. When I go to school I take many classes, and this usually means a backpack weighing well over 50lbs. Biking, or even walking, the distance to school would not work with such a load. Not to mention other things I carry for school for projects and such.
9. Rent closer to campus is too high and the houses closer to campus are ghetto and crappy.
And finally...
10. Shut the fuck up.

Gen Y doesn't believe in driving, as many can't afford the cars that they want or can't afford a car period. Plus, many don't see the need to drive to see their friends, when they can text of message them. Meeting face to face has been replaced by the internet...
And then there is the laziness factor...why drive when you can do everything at home or have your parents do it. Which is why Driverless cars are being pushed. So that people can do what they want (Facebooking, texting) without the trouble of actually driving a car.
If you have ever had the joy of driving a great RWD cad like a M3, Porsche 911, Lexus IS, or even a Mustang, or regular BMW, then you would never ask the question. The feeling of a great handling car is a great feeling. Plus the fact that you can control it, it give you confidence.

"ive met many people recently who believe students should be allowed cars while possessing government backed student loans"
it seems to me you think the government should outlaw this from happening ?
just a couple points..
1. alot of people dont live close enough to work and school in order to walk or ride a bike there and they dont have access to public transportation that could provide them transportation either.
2. those who do have access to public transportation alot of times the public transport isnt economical in terms of affordability.
3. yes, the current economic system we have is completely unsustainable and big part of that has to do with the extremely prevalent useage of combustion engines to provide transport for people who do not live in close proximity to their work/school/family/entertainment/shopping destinations.
4. in order to cure these problems.. whats the solution ? dont know. hard to say. ideally we would have everyone living where they wrk. ideally everyone would be working in environmentally sustaiable production careers. ideally we would have pollution free public transportation avilable at affordable costs for everyone who needs it. etc etc etc

in NY city there's a grocery on every corner

First off I love cars a bigger factor in why I dont want a beater, is if Im driving it needs to be a descent car to be enjoyable.
And the social shit is total nonsense if I had to pay for insurance and gas, my going out budget would be destroyed, not only would I have to give up drinking, but Id have to find parking every time Im hanging with my friends. This is one of the main reasons why I didnt bother with a free car, insurance would be 200 a month( which would cover my liquor) , still would need cab fare when I drink, not to mention Id need a contingency fund for breakdowns.
Dumbass reasons, you can do everything you just mentioned putting a little bit more effort. However if you can really afford it then buy it, a lot of people need a car anyway.
Id have no problem with people owning cars if they werent getting into debt to purchase them, but logically a large part of the population cant afford a car in cash, which means they shouldnt have one in the first fucking place.

I just got in my car, went to Total Wine and picked up a six pack of Bitburger beer and a Macanudo. How do I get that back to my house on a bike?

Well you could just drink at a bar since you wouldnt have to cheap out to pay for it.

Did that Friday night. Now I'm just home and reflecting. You know, bossin it up.

Man, you can get a good beater, you can get a Crown Vic for 500-800 dollars, hook it up, and they last for yrs. Or you can get a nice beater for 5k...
There are literally tons of cars out there that people can get w/o going broke. The problem is, too many people think that they "deserve" the best, when you have to work for it.

You got me atleast interested, how much do you actually pay a month.
I figured to be about 300-500 a month including average out repairs insurance, registration, and gas.

the real question is, do families need more than one car... to his ill answer NO. There s a right middle to be found between no car and 3 or 4 cars for a family.

Families and shit is different, or for old fucks that cant walk. Im talking about your average young folk that cant afford kids without some debt scheme.

If you live in a rural area then you have to have a car. Cities always offer good public transport.

Unless you live around a large metro area, you don't have access to public mass transit.
Cars allow us to travel freely as we wish . I just wish a viable electric car would come out.

QFT
It's so much harder to kidnap a nice gal and bring her back to your place via public transportation after she's already had one too many "roofy cocktails". Just kills the moment when you are scrounging for pocket change to cover the bus fare IMO.

Owning a car makes zero sense--but, the nearest bus stop is 8 miles away and the nearest store is 5 miles away, so it makes "daily life" possible...which trumps sense. Especially when you have to walk 8 miles to get on a bus that drives 20 more miles and drops you off 2 more miles from work. You stop caring about sense when you have to leave for work at 9:30 pm...despite not actually getting home until 11pm.
Possible > sensical
-
If anyone can live their life without the need of a car, then thumbs up to them. To a lot of American's, a car is a home away from home. A sanctuary if you will. More people in America get laid because of the kind of car they drive then anywhere else on the planet. Not owning a car is for the A-sexual type of humanoids.
-
it is called work. ::)
plus bitches love riding in cars. ;D
HS girls just care about going from point A to point B

In all fairness, America was always an experiment anyways. When the Ggews took over, it was doomed from the start. I once talked to a doctor at a party about really obese people. He said most of them don't have the switch inside them to tell them they're full. It's shut off from some sort of emotional reason or some shit. He also stated, that the Ggew bloodline has the same problem with the shut off switch when it comes to money/wealth. And that it will be their demise like the fat person. The Romans also had it.

Yes because theres a surplus of students out there that are going through school debt free. ::)

IT makes good sense if you do not live where there is good transit. In general where good transit is is also where the crime rates rise and also where the density of people rise. Neither is acceptable to me. I would NOT live in a large city, I'll visit but I wont live there.
In the end I think the OP is trying desperately to feel better about not being able to afford a vehicle. Take that shit up with Obama, I could care less

So the best you got is living in a shit neighborhood, which is more of a if everyone else is doing it I should too. Herd behavior it does not me its a good option just a desperate option.
Ive lived in a town of just a few thousand and never needed a car there either, this is like those yuppies that have to goto the most expensive schools, they dont have to they choose too.
Anyhow I could care less about actually having a car, I see it as a way the poor chooses to stay poor instead of investing, this is why the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer, not knowing your place is never a good thing.
-
How does one pick up a hooker without a car ???
-
If you live and work/study in a large city cars tend to be more of a pain to maintain. Gotta put up with traffic, high gas prices, find parking all the time, usually higher insurance costs, and watch out for cops placed strategically where drivers make careless infractions. Living in buttfuck nowhere you don't really have an option.
-
Dumbass reasons, you can do everything you just mentioned putting a little bit more effort. However if you can really afford it then buy it, a lot of people need a car anyway.
::)
It is less about "effort" than about cost and time effectiveness. Using a car saves me tons of time and money every month. And since time is money, and money is time, it works both ways.
-

What are you? 15? You have no real-world experience.
I agree, if someone can't afford a car they should not buy one but the idea that everyone should pay "cash" for everything is just blatantly absurd. The vast majority of people can't pay cash for cars (or homes) or much else. They "finance" these things where by they pay month to month for a period of time and then, after a while, own the car (or home) outright. This is how people do things in the modern world.
Clearly, many people over extend themselves and finance cars that they can never pay off or can not make payments on. In those cases, the cars get repossessed. But there are also many people who finance cars and make monthly payments and eventually own the car. They pay a nominal fee for financing it and they get to pay month to month, so it benefits both them and the financial institutions that they finance from.
-
the real question is, do families need more than one car... to his ill answer NO. There s a right middle to be found between no car and 3 or 4 cars for a family.
Most families need at least 2 cars. I live with my GF and we both have cars. We have totally different work and school schedules that constantly conflict. If I have to go to school at 9am I'm damn sure not waking up at 6:30 am to take her to work, and she damn sure won't want to go back and forth to pick me up when I get to work/school. Using 1 car is a waste of gas money with all of the back and forth trips, plus a huge waste of time because usually the person waiting for you has to wait a while and can't do anything with their schedule if they know they gotta pick you up at work at 5pm or whatever.
Our neighbor is married and has 3 kids and they use just 1 car. They are so limited by that and they hate it. They know.
-

Yeah, because the rich don't spend money on nice cars. Look, in certain types of work, cars are essential. I have one and so does my wife. They're both paid for, and they allow me to do the things I need to do. Public transit in the states is shit. White people don't take the bus.

I think its very obvious it benefits the producers in the economy, but for the average person it just means being eternally broke ass.
I love how you say I have no real world experience, and yet have had years of experience without cars that seemingly is impossible for most to understand.
Anyhow your going to school and got a car, unless you wanna give a detailed explanation of how your not fucking yourself over, Im gonna move on.

I've had the same car for almost 10 years. I paid 1,300 for it when I bought it. Put work into it since then. I'm not saying that not having a car is impossible, I'm saying that it is impossible for me.
Being a student makes it even more necessary for me to have a car, as I explained in my first post.
-
I try to ride my bike as much as possible, but a car is a modern cost/convenience. Not having one would circumscribe my life to a shitty extent.
-
Why have an oven when u could cook food over fire?
Why have a tv when you could read a book?
Why buy shoes when you could walk barefoot everywhere? Etc etc
Dude you can justify not "needing" anything...... But in the end it really is about convenience and simply making life easier more enjoyable
-
Who needs a car when you have a private limousine driver for the short trips and a Lear Jet for the longer trips to the gym with the 150 lb dummbells and tanning bed across town.

Cars are such a waste of money. I know guys who pay more for their cars then rent. Fucking losers, and they are the same ones complaining how the rich get richer. I made the stupid move a few years ago to buy an expensive car(ctsv). Then I bought a jeep for $1,200 for my winter rat. What a piece of shit that car was. Insurance was unbelievable. I delt with non stop repairs for 3 years before I wised up and sold it. (BTW the extended warranties are a scam, they found a way to get out of repairs every time). During that whole time the POS jeep never had a problem and now has 220,000 miles.
So now thats all I have. A 1996 Cherokee and a nice stable of bikes. I ride my bikes everywhere, rain or shine. 50mpg's and dont have to sit in traffic jams. The only time I use my jeep is to take my kayak fishing or to tow my bike to the track.

On my way to work, there is this guy who has a 2nd Gen Viper, and a Ford GT, his house is modest, and guess what he drives as a daily? A Honda Accord. So this man has the Americsn exotics, but knows that a good daily is reliable, easy to maintain.
And the extended warranties, I always figured that they were a scam.
