Does anybody have knowledge of and/or experience with decommissioned U.S. military vehicles?
I'm interested in retired army jeeps, and am considering trying to purchase one like this J8 JGMS:

I usually try to stay away from any vehicle with lights on top.
I imagine it would be just like buying any used car ???

LOL!!
I'm curious if they're "put together" a little bit better than the civilian versions. Supposedly, they're a bit more rugged. I'd prefer a model with only basic amenities, without many of the "bells & whistles" that require manufacturer-specific service when problematic.
There are places that auction them, and others that sell them outright. I was hoping for a little insight regarding things to look for when considering purchasing one. I'd also like to know how practical they are for use as an (almost) every day ride, as well as their track record for reliability.
The J8 seems Like the closest thing to a civilian-version vehicle.

Axles, gears, joints, skid plating....things to look at but you'd have to know what's on the civilian version to know if the military version has been upgraded. I don't know. :-[

Do you plan to offroad it?

Older Jeeps like the Willys Jeeps....aren't offroaded due to smaller wheelbase...More for show and are pretty cool when fully restored

???
Maybe not hardcore rock crawling but they are used offroad out here. There is actually at least one Willy Jeep club out here that does trail runs.

I'll take it offroad, but nothing abusive. So long as it's capability is at least comparable to my current Silverado, I'll be satisfied.

a couple of months ago i saw a kid head into the rubicon trail in (what i'm guessing was 1994) Silverado. It had no lift and regular tires. he had a mattress in the back and a hot girl. i now wish we had turned around to see how far he got. i'm going to guess about 10 feet.

I personally have never wheeled with anyone who was driving a Willys Jeep ??? I don't recall ever seeing any on the trails on the east coast....
Probably an older CJ-5 but thats about it...

Nice Jeep, but you look like you could use a trip to the gym and a salad. ;)

One day, when I have the time and money for the project, I'd love to get an AEV Brute Wrangler conversion kit. They run about $10k and require an estimated 60-hours of labor. I believe they currently only have kits for models up to 2006, but I'm sure that will change.

Ha-ha...I love it!!!
That's exactly what it is, too. And, a project like that is usually never done.
My best friend spent several years building the "ultimate offroad" truck. It was amazing, but he spent so much time and especially money on it. He just sold it about a year ago when his wife had their first little girl.
I give him credit for trading it in for something more practical/family-oriented, but it was still a bit of a "holy shit" moment when you realize that all the investments he'd put into that thing were gone in the time it took to sign his name on a few pieces of paper.
That truck was in his wedding!
-
I had an old duece and a half that I got from a surplus auction that I was going to put a water tank on so I could take water off road on job sites. I got a different truck to do that, and just parted it out. Thing was a beast.

Nice!
May I ask what year it was and how much you paid?

I actually bought two. One from a govt surplus auction(google it, it will come up, I can't remember the site) but the vehicle was in my area which was why I bid on it, and the other was from a dude off of Craigslist. Auction I paid $2200, other was around $3500.

Did they need much work from the purchased condition?

Not at all. The one from Craigslist was actually in pretty good shape, and was road worthy with plates. The one from the auction was in good shape also, as they rarely use them. Very low hours.
