Skydiver Felix Baumgartner set to break sound barrier
edit: looks like it's a go
(http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/59119000/jpg/_59119083_redbull.jpg)
The Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner will attempt to become the first human to break the sound barrier unaided by a vehicle.
He is going to jump out of a balloon at more than 120,000ft (36.5km) above Roswell, New Mexico.
In the near vacuum at that altitude, he should accelerate beyond about 690mph (1,110km/h) within 40 seconds.
If all goes well, he will open a parachute near the ground to land softly in the desert, 10 minutes later.
The 43-year-old adventurer - famous for jumping off skyscrapers - is under no illusions about the dangers he faces.
Where he is going, the air pressure is less than 2% of what it is at sea level, and it is impossible to breathe without an oxygen supply.
Others who have tried to break the existing records for the highest, fastest and longest freefalls have lost their lives in the process.
"If something goes wrong, the only thing that might help you is God," says Baumgartner.
"Because if you run out of luck, if you run out of skills, there is nothing left and you have to really hope he is not going to let you down."
Lift-off from Roswell airport will occur no earlier than 0730 local time (1330 GMT; 1430BST).

wild.

How exactly did some of the others die? Suffocation? Death by G-forces?

They didn't time their 6th meal properly during the descent

You possibly just answered your own question...
Probably in their instances, speed was a culprit as well.
-
It is pretty exciting stuff.

Probably just ripped into pieces when they reached a certain speed? Could have foreseen that though :D

Joe Kittinger holds the current record, set back in 1960. Guy is quite the stud...definitely worth reading his book if you are so inclined.
His Nat Geo article about his 1960 jump was posted online again -

yes, he's on the team for this attempt now..
anyway, looks like things are final;ly moving... check the video above !

as much as I like wild stuff like this - is this really necessary? Can we not spend the money on something better?
How about we take all the money and shoot 10 midgets into space?
Or how about this, we put 10 male midgets and 1 healthy blond good looking female into a capsule and shoot them into space lets see what happens.
-
ABORTED :'(
-
did he pussy out?
-
nah, wind a bit to strong
-
More disappointing than Snake River Canyon circa 1977

but a very similar carnival type event.
"fearless" Felix couldn't carry Joe Kittinger's space helmut.

LAUNCH!!!! 8)
Good job. Came here to bump it but you're all over this shit.

Looks awesome!

Looks awesome!
yep, the shots from the capsule looking down are pretty fucking sweet
-
Only another 100,000 feet to go :o
-
Oooh sweet, found it on the "Velocity" channel. One of those random channels on DirecTV that I've never watched before.
-
He's a bit past the half way mark now! Waiting and waiting and waiting....
-
Wonder if the clanking of brass balls while one walks gets annoying

Your boy Robert Griffin gonna be good to go today?

Wonder if the clanking of brass balls while one walks gets annoying
I Wonder if the smashing of marbles in his head becomes distracting!

Your boy Robert Griffin gonna be good to go today?
Well he's been back to practicing so hopefully he will be!

That balloon looks like Big ach's nose, upside down ;D

110,000 ft...and still climbing.
Guess we'll soon see what happens with the faceplate problem.

shits getting real!! :o
-
and it's go time!!!!!!
-
wow
-
the way he came out of that spin and gained a controlled freefall 8)
-
Why'd he tap out before setting the freefall record? I don't want to call him a pussy, but....
;D
This shit is fucking awesome.
-
i wager that cute wasn't made in fucking china ;D
-
Don`t know about anyone else but my heart was beating like crazy just before he jumped. His arsehole must have twitching as well. ;D ;D
-
Fuck yeah! Sticks the landing! Even the Russian judges give him a 10.
-
Fucking hell, that helicopter was close to him. :o :o
-
Don`t know about anyone else but my heart was beating like crazy just before he jumped. His arsehole must have twitching as well. ;D ;D
haha, same here.. my stomach is in fucking knots
phenomenal achievement 8)
-
Fucking hell, that helicopter was close to him. :o :o
I'm amazed at how well they proximated the landing zone. If he'd gone for the freefall time record, he'd be dead. The speed record was more important. :)
-
and he walked the landing out....like a pimp
-
that was amazing
-
Dude is strutting his stuff now that he's on the ground! Awesome!
-
Damn, that was cool as fuck - I was bricking myself as he stepped onto the platform and was holding onto those tiny little handrails!
-
Guy has now enough adrenaline for 7 lives 8)
-
Dude is strutting his stuff now that he's on the ground! Awesome!
Totally time to drop the old wife and get himself a hot young bitch...like Ronda Rousey. ;D
-
Nice jump, but looked a little soft and watery from the rear
-
I was like," damn this dude is jacked off of life after he landed". My wife said, "yeah, he's probably got a boner". That was amazing.
-
We've come a long way.....
Here's an attempt from exactly 100 years ago....didn't go well
-
Amazing is not a word good enough to describe what I just saw. A true inspiration and example of what determination and desire can achieve.
-
Okay lets leave the technicalities on the side, they are amazing , and nobody doubts that Baumgartner has elephantitis but....
Why was his jump so amazing?
He sat in a capsule, dropped from door at 30k feet, pulled a string which opened his parachute and that's it, how is that amazing, I fact I would say there are thousands of people that "could" do the same.
Somebody freediving 100 meters on a single breath of air is amazing, the stratos fall was a massively hyped advertisement.
-

That was f-ing crazy. Dude has balls of steel. 8)

why did he need the parachute to take him up..............thought red bull gives you wings. ;D ;D

I sense bitterness and jealously.

Wow lot of Baumgartner fan boys here, listen as usually I need to spell things out for you semi retarded meat heads.
It's not amazing if somebody jumps out of a balloon, it would be amazing if he would have reached that hightail on a flying carpet. But all he did was to lazily drop of the side of a shiny capsule and 10 min later human kind is patting then self on the back for a job well done.

Entertaining than, yes I fully agree, but it wasn't amazing - the mars landing was amazing tho

Modern day humans are amazed by mediocrity.
While his feat is impressive, its not amazing. I agree with Herr Nico.
-
Some unofficial stats -
Exit altitude: 128,100ft
Freefall time 4 minutes 20 seconds
Freefall distance 119,846ft
Velocity 373metres per second or 833.9mph => Mach 1.24

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Milton Vagrant.

Just the shear entertainment factor it brought to over 7 million people that watched it live makes it worth it in my opinion.
To say that anything is 'amazing' is ultimately very subjective, and everyone's got right to their opinion.
But even with that said, I still think Stark is a jealous twat.

I rather stab myself in the eye with a glowing red hot fork before I ever dream jumping out of a capsule in 30k feet
Still nobody could bring any clear evidencd that would justify this to be amazing.

Not going to make it here if you're not learning to read posts properly, I said could, COULD been done again.
I get your point. I read the article and the danger is only in equipment malfunctioning.
It's very cool but a large chunk of people who skydive could have done this. With unlimited funding this is something that a lot of people could train for in a week.
-
Just try to acelerate your car to, let's say, 120mph then stick your arm out your window and see how difficult it is to keep it straight and leveled. Now imagine it at 684mph and keep your whole body leveled. That is just the beginning of it. it's easy to say it doesn't seem like much because you are not educated enough to realize how fucking hard it is to make the slightest movement of opening your parachute AND keep your body from entering in a spin when you're freefalling. If you can, imagine that now at 684mph with a astronaut suit low on oxygen KNOWING you might die at the slightest error.
Go try it from regular height and let me know how it went
-

Uhm, he jumped from 128,000 feet, 4 times higher than what you said and 4 times higher than most jetliners. And at approximately 24 miles high it's at the edge of space. As for the thousands of people who could do the same, suffice it to say that there's a reason why, counting Felix, only two people have done this so far, and why it took over 50 years for the second person to attempt such a jump.
Somebody freediving 100 meters on a single breath of air is amazing, the stratos fall was a massively hyped advertisement.
They are both amazing and that you don't find it to be amazing doesn't say much. The commercial aspects of it don't detract from the fact that what Baumgartner did was amazing.
-
No shit, dude rides a balloon up into space and then bails, Wyle E Coyote style. Fucking getbigger for sure.
HAHAHAAAAAAAA...i thought the same fucking thing when he bailed....i was waiting for the puff of smoke when he hits the canyon floor ;D ;D

-
I get your point. I read the article and the danger is only in equipment malfunctioning.
BULLSHIT! There were many other risks, including somethign which actually did happen: Baumgartner got in a flat spin, from which recovery can be nearly impossible and which could have killed him before he came down. Baumgartner got out of with a combination of skill and luck.
It's very cool but a large chunk of people who skydive could have done this. With unlimited funding this is something that a lot of people could train for in a week.
I'm sure that many skydivers could have trained to do this. I doubt that "a large chunk" could have, or that it would only take them a week. But I'm sure that any getbigger could have done. Some might have even been able to do it without a spacesuit - just by flexing.

Wow, I can not believe what I am reading, this guy thinks what the man did is no big deal? ???
Way to put him in his place avxo. Ya that spinning violently at 600mph would make the average human black out instantly for sure. What a dumbass, whoever started this thread.

stark have you ever jumped off a 60feet cliff into water?ever stood on one?
this guy didnt jump from 30k feet he jumped from 40 kilometers, some 120k feet.
you fucking uneducated mongoloid ox, he jumped from the edge of space into earths athmoshpere, you thinking space starts at 30k feet says alot about your lack of education

At least this wasn't part of the 2 billion dollar Mars Rover ::)
-

Of course you could have. It's trivial to teach a monkey to recover from a flat spin during a free fall at 700mph. Besides, the monkey would fit in a smaller capsule!
In all seriousness, what you said is a load of bunk; the engineering behind the space suit he wore was cool and cutting edge; no argument there. But to write the human element off, as you did, is, to be blunt, bullshit.
Nobody is saying that Baumgartner cured cancer or that he should get a Nobel (although, considering who they give the Peace Prize to lately...). But he did do something amazing - the helmet cam views as he steps out of the capsule and steps off are proof of that.

Most people would pass out from the blood rush. It takes a person with a special makeup to withstand that speed to not just throw up in their mask and die. For some reason it would seem easier to jump from that height when you can't see shit than when your 10000 feet up and the ground is staring you in the face. jumping from where he jumped is like jumping into a void.
-
i wonder how jay cutler would have done this

For some reason it would seem easier to jump from that height when you can't see shit than when your 10000 feet up and the ground is staring you in the face. jumping from where he jumped is like jumping into a void.
Okay so I have no idea what I am talking about since I have never jumped out of anything higher than uhmm i dunno, however a guy here in my job who's a lot into para jumping and has done the occasional base jump told me that you are actually not aware of the speed until you reach a certain heights - does the speed (if you fall straight down or forward) and no G force in involved (rapidly changing direction) has any impact on the human body at all?

Whether you "feel" the speed is not the issue. The speed was only an incidental thing in this jump because he broke a speed record.
As for g-forces: The quintessential characteristic of free fall is that you are under a constant downward acceleration of 1g. He was subjected to a constant 1 g acceleration.
Once he got into the flat spin, shortly after he exceeded Mach 1, the centrifugal force (which isn't really a force per se, but let's not be pedantic) was high enough that there were concerns that he would suffer loss of consciousness.
This was a jump taken to extremes, and that's what makes it noteworthy and merited serious scientific attention. NASA, for example, will be assessing the spacesuit that Baumgartner used and the viability of astronanuts performing emergency spacecraft evacuation jumps (although don't expect anyone jumping from the ISS, which at 230 miles is almost exactly 10 times higher than Baumgartner's capsule).

There is a terminal velocity that you would get in the regular atmosphere that most parachutists hit, but this guy jumped from the edge of space. He could black out immediately.

Just watched the video. FUCK! Got chills watching the initial jump.

For me the guy is a fucking MAN

Who was that double ponytail cutie?

This. Seeing the curvature of the earth so clearly visible was something else.

stark have you ever jumped off a 60feet cliff into water?ever stood on one?
this guy didnt jump from 30k feet he jumped from 40 kilometers, some 120k feet.
you fucking uneducated mongoloid ox, he jumped from the edge of space into earths athmoshpere, you thinking space starts at 30k feet says alot about your lack of education
Like I said I always stay honest if I don't know something so I thought it wasn't a big deal to simply jump as in stepping of a capsul and dropping to the earth, reading the post there might be more yo that do will read up on it. It's just the person I am generally speaking if the whole world says yes I get suspicious
