Biden contradicts State Department on Benghazi security

Vice President Joe Biden claimed that the administration wasn't aware of requests for more security in Libya before the Sept. 11 attacks on the U.S. mission in Benghazi during Thursday night's debate, contradicting two State Department officials and the former head of diplomatic security in Libya.

"We weren't told they wanted more security. We did not know they wanted more security there," Biden said.

In fact, two security officials who worked for the State Department in Libya at the time testified Thursday that they repeatedly requested more security and two State Department officials admitted they had denied those requests.

"All of us at post were in sync that we wanted these resources," the top regional security officer in Libya over the summer, Eric Nordstrom, testified. "In those conversations, I was specifically told [by Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Charlene Lamb] ‘You cannot request an SST extension.' I determined I was told that because there would be too much political cost. We went ahead and requested it anyway."

Nordstrom was so critical of the State Department's reluctance to respond to his calls for more security that he said, "For me, the Taliban is on the inside of the building."

"We felt great frustration that those requests were ignored or just never met," testified Lt. Col. Andrew Wood, a Utah National Guardsman who was leading a security team in Libya until August.

House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA) released the unclassified cables containing those requests.

Rep. Paul Ryan pointed out the testimony to Biden during the debate. Ryan also erred when he criticized the State Department for assigning Marines to protect the ambassador in France but not Amb. Chris Stevens, who died in Benghazi on Sept. 11.

"Our ambassador in Paris has a marine detachment guarding him, shouldn't we have a Marine detachment guarding our ambassador in Benghazi?," Ryan said.

According to the U.S. Embassy Paris website, there is a Marine Security Guard Detachment in the embassy, but they are there primarily to protect classified information and are not part of the ambassador's personal security detail.

"The mission of the Marine Security Guards is to provide internal security at designated United States Diplomatic and Consular facilities to prevent the compromise of classified material and equipment which, if compromised, would cause serious damage to the national security interests of the United States; and to provide protection for U.S. citizens and property within the principal buildings of the Mission," the website reads, noting that in certain situations the Marines might be in a position to protect the chief of mission.

Ryan also criticized President Barack Obama for attributing the Benghazi attack to an anti-Islam video and he referred to comments today by Obama campaign spokesman Stephanie Cutter, who said the Benghazi issue was only politically relevant because the Romney-Ryan campaign was pushing it.

Biden accused Romney of spouting off about the Benghazi attack before knowing all the facts and he pledged that the administration would pursue the investigation to wherever it leads.

Biden blames intelligence community for changing story about Libya attack

By Julian Pecquet - 10/11/12 09:44 PM ET

Vice President Biden blamed intelligence officials for the administration's changing account of the terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya, during Thursday night's debate with Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.).

The Obama administration has been under fire for initially linking the attack on the U.S. Consulate to an anti-Islam video made in the U.S. before later acknowledging that that the attack was an act of terrorism, not a protest that turned violent.

Biden said the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice, was repeating what intelligence sources had told her when she blamed the video as a “proximate cause” of the violence in an interview five days after the attack.

“The intelligence community told us that,” Biden said. “As they learned more facts about exactly what happened, they changed their assessment.”

The vice president attacked Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney for weighing in on the violence in Libya before it was known that Ambassador Christopher Stevens was among four Americans that had been killed.

“That's not presidential leadership,” Biden said.

Ryan said it was clear from the start that it was an act of terrorism and ripped the administration for focusing on the YouTube video in the days after the assault.

“It took the president two weeks to acknowledge this was a terrorist attack,” Ryan said. “He went to the U.N. and in his speech at the U.N. [on Sept. 25] six times talked about the You Tube video.

“Look, if we are hit by terrorists, we are going to call it for what it is: a terrorist attack.”

Biden was also questioned about statements from officials stationed in Libya who said they had repeatedly asked the administration for more security at the consulate.

"Well, we weren’t told they wanted more security there," Biden said. "We did not know they wanted more security."

Biden's statement directly contradicts the testimony of two security officers who were based in Libya earlier this year. Lt. Col. Andy Wood, the head of a 16-person Special Forces team that left in August, and State Department regional security officer Eric Nordstorm said Wednesday that they repeatedly asked for beefed up security but were turned down.

“The takeaway … for me and my staff, was abundantly clear — we were not going to get resources until the aftermath of an incident,” Nordstrom said at a hearing of the House oversight panel. “And the question that we would ask is: how thin does the ice have to get before someone falls through?”

Ryan also slammed Obama campaign official Stephanie Cutter's statement earlier Thursday that the “entire reason that [Libya] has become the, you know, political topic it is because of Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan.”

“This is becoming more troubling by the day,” Ryan said. “They first blamed the YouTube video; now they're trying to blame the Romney-Ryan ticket for making this an issue.”

Romney singled out Cutter at a political event in North Carolina earlier in the day, saying the attack in Libya is an issue "because this is the first time in 33 years that a United States ambassador has been assassinated.”

This admistration is in complete disarray on this issue.  The State department is throwing the White House under the bus, the White House is attempting to throw the career employees in the intelligence community under the bus and the spies are leaking info damaging to the White House and State Department.

The bottom line is this...they knew form day one that there were no demonstrations, they knew it was a terrorist attack and they knew well beforehand that the situation was volatile and extremely dangerous...and they ignored it.   The President was apprised of the attack and showed his leadership skills by going to bed so he could fly to Vegas the next day to party and campaign.

As the details of this atrocity continue to emerge...it will be one of the issues that utimately cost Obama the election

Mitt Romney: Biden ‘doubling down on denial’ on Libya
 Washington Post ^ | October 12, 2012 | Ed O'Keefe

Posted on Friday, October 12, 2012 1:08:28 PM by maggief

RICHMOND, Va. — Mitt Romney criticized Vice President Biden on Friday for “directly contradicting the sworn testimony of State Department officials” during Thursday night’s vice presidential debate, picking up on GOP attacks leveled at the vice president in the hours since the exchange.

“He’s doubling down on denial and we need to understand exactly what happened as opposed to just having people brush this aside,” Romney told a crowd gathered outside an auto dealership in Richmond. “When the vice president of the United States directly contradicts the sworn testimony of State Department officials, American citizens have the right to know just what’s going on.”

did Ryan point it out?

People called obama a dumb shit for not calling out romney on his falsehoods during the debate.

Ryan let quite a lot of them slide too.

And on the fighting in East Afghanistan, Ryan was completely wrecked - he tried saying "but but I was talking about EAST afghanistan", at which point you saw joe biden's face light up with a smile - he KNEW he had ryan by the nutsack then.    That part was painful to watch.  You could see paul ryan's face get white as biden pointed out we are getting more AFGHANS into the dangerous areas.  No response.  Just that tight lipped "hurry up to the next Q".

The moderator didn't help, she just let him dangle there.  He did open the door to east afghanistan.

White House moves to insulate Biden, Obama on Libya Security question
Fox News ^ | October 12, 2012

Posted on Friday, October 12, 2012 1:40:51 PM by

The White House scrambled Friday to explain Vice President Biden's confusing statement that "we weren't told" of requests for more diplomatic security in Libya, claiming he was referring only to "himself" and President Obama.

Biden, during Thursday's debate, had made the controversial statement in response to criticism from Paul Ryan about the protection of diplomatic posts in Libya in the run-up to the Sept. 11 terror attack.

Moderator Martha Raddatz pressed him: "And they wanted more security there."

But Biden responded: "Well, we weren't told they wanted more security there. We did not know they wanted more security again."

They should have had extensive meetings on security and risk of attacks on 9/11 anniversary.  If they had time to campaign, they had time to beef up security at these places.  The buck stops there.

I thought you loved lies. You will vote Romney yes?
