Title: DVDs for learning the basics without a boxing club?
Post by: Shockwave on October 19, 2012, 10:49:25 AM
Im thinking about picking this up, I want to start learning the basics but I can't find a decent boxing club where I'm currently living. (Kind of out in the sticks)

Would this be acceptable to start learning the basics, or should I just wait until I move further south and can find a decent gym?

it hard to pick up anything off DVD's,, why not join your local boxing gym? REAL boxing gyms are hard to find nowadays since most are now MMA shit.... But they are cheap, some are like $15 a month

Thats the problem, I moved out of Houston back to my hometown for my son to be born, and there is NO decent boxing gym's here. Nothing whatsoever. Im currently trying to find a job further down south so I can get out of this shithole, but I was hoping to learn something in the meantime. I know DVD's suck, but there is no better option at the moment, and I was wondering how credible something with Roach teaching would be.

I'm talking the absolute fucking basics.... footwork, bag work, punching technique... As I said earlier, im in the unfortunate situation of having ZERO boxing gyms in a driveable distance right now.
Something I can do in my garage until I can get to an actual gym, thats not going to require me to undo a bunch of bad habits. ( I already have a 100lb heavy bag from when I was doing Pancrase/kickboxing)

Yeah you can learn some technique ( foot work , punching....etc.) from a video but it doesn't mean you are going to be able to use it in a real fight or a boxing match. the only way to learn how to fight is fighting , basically getting your ass kicked.

Yes, that I know. Nothing was more demoralizing that getting my ass kicked by a 150 lb ginger at my old MMA club. We didn't do a whole lot of striking technique in MMA, it was mostly focused on the ground game and the striking side was very, very minimal (some basic kickboxing), we never really got into the actual technique, it was all just "punch/kick the mitt/bag".

This is just something to get me started with boxing until I can find a decent club, I'm not expecting to go out and jump in a ring with someone after watching Roach's crash course to boxing  :D

i have never boxed, but my little cousin did for a bit, and i went for a day and checked it out, they would do 3 rounds of Jump rope, follwed by 3 rounds of shadow boxing, 3 rounds of heavy bag, 3 rounds of ring hand mitts, and another 3 rounds of jump rope....

One thing about boxing, it requires alot of Stamina , Stamina , Stamina and more Stamina

Get you one of those Bell Timers, 3 minutes seem like a life time and the one minute rest goes by faster then it takes you to sneeze

I remember reading somewhere of this MMA dude who learned MMA from DVDs, and became pretty good, and then joined a gym.

I have some Capoeira DVDs and learned some moves from YouTube instructional vids...so you can learn something.
