Also some have no money at all and no recourse to public funds. £10 to me is nothing. £10 to them can get them food/booze for a few days and maybe a night or two in a hostel.

I sponsor a kid in Sri Lanka and have donations each year that total about $1000-$1200. I'm a sucker for kids and animals and have given money to the homeless as well but not like I do to kids.

I've just had too many people be aggressive when asking for money. No sympathy anymore. There are tons of programs here to help out homeless people. I would rather donate to them.

No, fuck em. They are there on by their own doing. Sure there are exceptions, but not many. I gave a homeless guy a job and he worked for two days then was gone. Got enough money for his fix, but couldn't hack it. I saw him a few weeks later at the same Harris teeter I found him at. Bums should be euthanized like stray dogs, and I have more sympathy for the dog.

Yes, conditionally.
If they are provable war veterans or have a bad illness I always give them a little something. I'll also give to them sometimes if they are honest about what they are going to buy with the money. If I see certain ones around, I also let them have any recyclable cans or scrap I have about or old clothes.
I will not give to any that are the least bit aggressive about it.

Knew a guy who had about 10 different spots across the city he would work, Monday thru Friday, 9 to 5. Like a regular job. At 5 o'clock he'd walk a few blocks to his newer model 4 door loaded pick up truck and drive to his brick home.
Another restaurant I would frequent had a guy pulling the same "my car ran out of gas, I'm traveling cross state...can you loan me a few bucks?" routine for MONTHS before moving on to god knows where.

I regularly attend a homeless church. I have quite a few homeless friends. and yes I give the ones I don't know money regardless of what they might buy. and I pickup hitch hikers if it's convenient and they don't look murderous.

Why are those who rampaged across Southeast Asia and assisted in the killing of hundreds of thousands in that region -- for no perceptible benefit to American security -- more deserving of your money than, say, persons who was on the cusp of poverty, lacked insurance, and lost their home in a fire?

Over the years, I've made small talk with some while getting coffee, waiting for trains, etc..... they'll mention VA appointments, show VA ID, mention various engagements, etc..... if I talk to to them a couple of times, and they seem legit they can have my change every once and a while. I also look at the general condition of a person, if they've lost limbs, sight, or are in general poor health, they, too, can have my change if they want it ex-service or not.
WWII, Korea, etc..... are not legitimate? I've known lots of poor vets from those Wars that have asked for help at certain times. And I quite frankly, don't care what they've done, most were young and doing what they thought was right in service of our country, and for that I give them a tad more respect.
As for people that are homeless due to fire, etc....... No, I have sympathy for them, and if one was to pass the hat for a person in that circumstance, I'd offer something, but in my experience people like that generally aren't homeless too long, unless there is some other issue going on.

When im not at home and im in a hurry and eat from fast food I sometimes give out the fries or the bread to the first homeless person I come across. Never money..

It depends..young and able-bodied? No. Older bum looking, obviously no hope of ever being self sufficient? yes. An exception will be made if the younger person has a really good gimmick or routine...I'll always pay for quality entertainment.

we practically dont have beggars on the streets in holland, and we have enough facilities for these people that they dont have to be on the street and sleep in a warm environment. we dont let them starve on the street.
and i fucking dont trust these romanians, i saw them enough in brussels , dirty people, when ur eating they come to you with their little "hungry" child and begging for money or walking through the train crying they need money for an operation.
at the end of the day pappa drives by with the big mercedes and cashes all they earned that day.

I used to see this guy every morning at an intersection begging for money. I went to the nearby bank and heard people talking. They say the guy comes in about 3-4 times a day to make deposits into his account. You figure the guy may make a few hundred or more in a day, that adds up over the year.
True story:
I saw this semi-attractive blonde asking for money. I gave her $20 for a blow job. Doing my civic duty.

Our city has extensive resources for the homeless if they want help. Many would rather work the street corners than abide by the rules of the shelters which is to not be falling down drunk and be in before 10pm. So I give whether I want to or not through city programs. But no... not ever on the street... why would I encourage such behavior?

No I don't. Nor do I feed bears or deer at national parks. Last time I had an encounter with a bum I was going to the store as I was doing a painting project dressed in old shitty clothes. He asked me for money. I said what the fuck are you doing over here I'm working this side of the street. No shit as I got into my car I saw him on the other side of the street. lol.

There is a homeless man that I see regularly outside of one of the buildings where I work. Due to a local board I sit on, he recognizes me. I know he is a stone alcoholic with a family that would take him in, but he WANTS to live on the streets.
With that being said, I buy him Chinese food or a sandwich from the deli on the regular, because he is an awfully nice guy, if a bit unstable.

Chiro, I donate a lot of my time/money to charitable organizations.
I do not feel it wise to give money to homeless individuals who are asking for bus fare (they never go anywhere), money for food (they don't use the money for food), money for medical expenses (the local hospital has charity care).
I do not want them to spend money on drugs/alcohol, so I buy the one man that I regularly see food that he likes. When the people at the Chinese food see me, they even ask me "Are you ordering for you for for .......?" because they know what we both eat.
