This is only for Protein Powder users...all else please beat it..
So what brand/type are you using?
-
I'm currently using a custom blend of calcium caseinate, micellar casein, beef, and whole egg solids.
I usually mix it with whole milk and heavy cream.
Occasionally I'll go old-school and mix three scoops with six raw eggs and heavy cream, which makes more of a pudding, but I can adjust the consistency by adding more or less cream.
I don't advocate consuming raw eggs.

BSN Snytha6 I have been using this one for 4 years now and can't see myself changing as I love all the flavours which I have used and I feel good on this protein powder.

I've used Syntha in the past and was quite pleased with its taste, ease of mixing, and digestion. The price was also quite reasonable compared with other brands.
My only criticism is that it is on the high end in regards to calories and, especially, carbs. I did make some gains while using it, but those gains were not limited to muscle.
Also, I noticed a while back that the price of Syntha-6 has climbed a bit to more closely match it's competitors. For a commercial blend at that price, I'd be more inclined to go with Pro-Complex based on label claims. It's a leaner formula.
One of my buddies works PT for Vitamin World, who's parent company recently acquired Met-Rx. They are supposedly once again using the original Connelly Metamyosin formula in the RTD's, which would be a great thing since it was that blend that earned Met-Rx its place atop the supplement world for a time. According to my friend, the packets' taste and texture are just as they were when we used them years ago with good results.
It may be worth trying them again after all these years!

Allmax Isolate. Strawberry whey.

I have used Syntha in the past but didn't agree with my system. Although I am curious about the new Isolate mixture.
I seem to have had the best luck with Intrapro by Gaspari ands also Isopro which is a little pricey.I am on the hunt for something new but may just default back to one of the 2.
Monty - I used to run a Vitamin World, back in 2010 a company bought NBTY (Vitamin World) who also bought Metrx so they are both under the Carlyle group

Really?
I'd honestly never heard that.

Two scoops of Promasil with a few slices of banana, some almond milk, and a dash of cinnamon post workout does the trick for me.
-
I used powders regularly in the past now if I make a shake every two or three months that's a lot. Whole foods for me.

i use a custom blend for breakfast, and another for before bed...i will read off the labels later...
but for a post workout ive been using dymatize iso-100 lately....pure whey hydroslates...

Well, if you like it, use it.
I came across some info that really turned me off to it, though.
The link to the study was on my old computer, which crashed and burned at the beginning of summer. If I can find it again, I'll post it here. Until then...
Basically, they attached tracers to hydrolyzed casein and whole-part casein molecules in order to track them through digestion. What they found is that, while offering much faster transit time to circulation, the hydrolyzed form saw a large percentage of its amino content destroyed during digestion.
In contrast, the whole-part casein saw a more complete amino delivery despite taking longer to get there.
The hydrolyzing process is very complex and expensive. The end result is that you are paying much more money for less total delivery. Casein, by nature, absorbs slowly. Let it. If you're after faster absorption times, just go with whey. It's cheaper, AND your muscles get more of its aminos.
Just my two-cents.

At least several companies are now marketing products with some form of hydrolyzed casein, and most of those are quite pricy. Casein is already a more expensive ingredient. It seems like a shame to charge even more to do to it something that reduces its benefits.
I believe in casein more than whey. I feel I've made better gains on it.
When Rexall bought Met-Rx, the first thing they did was remove casein from the Metamyosin blend in order to offer competitive pricing in the "Walmart" market. Coincidentally, this was also when their product quality, and subsequently, sales among serious trainers dropped.

So I decided to pick up a 2lb Muclemeds Carnivor, so far so good. It is light in flavor but seems to be good in the digestion.
Stay tuned.

ground beef is cheaper and is probably more bioavailable... i guess the only advantage of the shake is that you don't have to cook it
-
I'm not familiar with the Carnivor powder, but I know that the primary source of protein in their Carnivor Shots is/was collagen, which is disgusting and very low quality protein. The shots' amino profile was due to the BCAA's they add to the product.
Collagen is about the most common and abundant connective tissue in mammals. It's in everything from skin and hair to nails, etc. In cows, collagen is also found in hooves and ears. Since the label doesn't specify, you could be mixing desiccated tongue in your shake for all you know. Or, maybe the next canister you purchase will contain some nice nose cartilage!
Technically, there is protein in collagen, but not the same quality you would find in the parts of the animal we usually serve for meals.

Oh, I'm sure it's tasty. But, as far as its use in a protein supplement, I would expect other parts to yield a better value.
Have you ever tried scrapple?

as in mushed pork scraps with cornmeal & flour? that's a big negative
cow tongue provides very high quality and complete protein on top of several nutrients and healthy saturated fat (let's not debate this... i'm drinking ATM)

buy one (they are cheap)
simmer in water with salt for 30 minutes (do not boil, just simmer)
slit the underside of the tongue less than 1/4 inch deep length wise and peel off the skin (too tough to eat)
slice the remaining meat into 1/2 inch slices or pieces
you can then add it to a stir fry or grill lightly and serve with sauce or gravy
tastes amazing

Awesome!
I was going to ask you if it's tough or fibrous at all. That's my only gripe with a lot of venison - the membranes are often very tough to work with and eat.
Thanks!!

Monster mass is amaaaaaaazing. So many flavors all AWESOME... and fantastic profile of amino acids/etc... Def can act as a meal replacement too if in a rush. One serving is 600+~cals. Been hooked since last two years. However in last year or so i've been avoiding shakes as much as possible, recently got it again just out of convenience. I wish they had a 10lbs instead of the usual 5lbs

Yeah, and their prices are among the better I've seen for similar products.
I remember when BSN offered good prices, too. Then, they slowly crept up to match other, better quality proteins. That's when/why I stopped using Syntha-6. For only a few dollars more, I could get Optimum's best blend, which had fewer calories and carbs per serving. :-\

Oh, I think it's a very good protein, especially for the price at which I used to get it. I paid around $38 for the big canister. I didn't mind the fat so much; it is mostly MCT's if I recall. But the calories and carbs weren't in the favorable range for me.
It was my "wintertime/fully-clothed season" protein. :)
Once their price soared to almost match Optimum's, I went back to using Pro-Complex regularly.

I've been using the Met-Rx MRP's about once per day along with my custom blend. Deciding to take a break from the custom, I opened my Dymatize's Elite Fusion 7 last night. Very good taste (chocolate) and mixability. The texture and nutrition profile remind me a lot of Pro-Complex, which was a staple in my supplement cupboard for years.
Today, I mixed in a cup of raw oatmeal with two scoops of powder. Great consistency and taste.
I will probably order another canister of this and the Met-Rx soon. The latter DOES seem to be the original Scott Connelly formula, or close enough to it.

I never tried the original vanilla, so I'll take your word for it. Do you mix all that stuff above into the Met-Rx?
You could patch potholes with what you don't drink!

I haven't eaten a protein bar in years, but I remember theirs tasting great. Those ones World Wide made had an excessive artificial sweetener taste to them.
The Met-Rx Big 100 choc chip cookie dough flavor really tasted like raw cookie dough.

Update on the Elite Fusion7:
I've noticed extreme bloating and lethal gas three of the last four times I've used it now. I'll give it one more chance tomorrow. If it still happens, this will not be a powder I use again. I really liked this stuff, too. :(

Smart powders was a staple for me, but when they jacked their prices I went elsewhere. 70 bux for 10 pounds isn't atrocious, but they fuck you with shipping and don't offer any shipping incentives even if you buy a couple hundred dollars worth. I switched to American Pure Whey as it was by far the best deal on the planet. 20 pounds for 115 bux. They had some bad reviews at one point, but as far as I'm concerned they corrected whatever ailed them. My most recent purchase was from True Protein. Got 20 pounds for 130 bux shipped. Orded chocolate and it was supposed to be sweetened with stevia. I believe they forgot the stevia as it tastes like my shaker bottle filled with water after drinking a protein shake out of it. I'll probably be going back to American Pure Whey.

It's usually a good idea to order extra heavy flavoring from True Protein, particularly if you order either the whole egg and/or beef blend, both of which tend to be naturally salty. My last order contained both of those and tastes fine.

Thanks for the tip. Mine was the cheap WPC blend. If I ever venture back there, I'll make sure to go as heavy on sweetener as possible. Like smartpowders, they too really bend you over with shipping.

Yeah, they ought to rename "shipping" to "grab your ankles and start walking backwards."

12-pack ABB Max Recovery, $21
ANSI Ultimate Flurry Hi-Protein (40 grams), 15-oz cans - $1.23 each. I've bought about six of these, so far.

I've been mixing up to three MET-Rx MRP's per day and have not experienced any negative reactions. In that regard, it is probably the most "agreeable" protein I've used. Many others have caused me at least some gastric disturbance and/or acne via food allergy.
I haven't bought Optimum Nutrition in a while - maybe since Costello sold the company - but I have a container of Pro-Complex ready to open shortly.
