Well, you know what they say. You can get an Empire as huge as the Great Nascar El Somebody, but keeping it is the hard part.
You'd need a very efficient military to be able to push away all invaders from all corners. That's the hard part, keeping the Empire.
And of course keeping people happy INSIDE the empire to avoid rebellion during wartimes when your borders are attacked.

I think when the Muslims kicked out the Shah and brought in Khomeni in the 1970s was the official end of the empire.

The Persians were at their peek under Cyrus the great, he marched into Babylon (The greatest city in the world at the time) and destroyed the Babylonians in 539 BC. Cyrus was a general and a King so he knew how to control his army, he expanded the Empire flawlessly until he died.
200 years later The Empire was to big to control, although they had more man power then every army known until this point, some say 2 million but unlikely that much, possibly 1 million though, nevertheless the armies where not divided into races but rather every man randomly placed into position and this was their big mistake, that is why they were defeated by Alexander the Great between 334 and 331 BC

Yes Persia is modern day Iran and the Empire they dethrone to establish supremacy was Babylonia, modern day Iraq
how did they lose that?
well, theres always, eventually, someone stronger.
or it rips itself up from within.
Yes and Cyrus knew this, this what he wrote in his tomb;
O man, whoever thou art, from wheresoever thou cometh, for I know you shall come, I am Cyrus, who founded the empire of the Persians.
Grudge me not, therefore, this little earth that covers my body.
When Alexander found his tomb, he said that Cyrus,s message was for him specifically and he would grant Cyrus his request so Alexander decorated and honored his tomb.

Yes impressive indeed, its all about about discipline, morale and leadership and they had all 3. But failed in not defending their loyal neighbors from their enemies while at the same time still taxing them heavy and that created to many rebellions, there fall was inevitable.

Is that anywhere near Lake Nassar?

The map. See it.

Seriously though, Sulieman(sp?) was the fucking man. Peak of their power. After that, corruption and weakness and Islam lead to their der Untergang.
