Title: Nuclear bomb on the moon
Post by: Dr Dutch on November 30, 2012, 01:12:34 PM
According to a report obtained by CNN, a top secret plan was developed by the U.S. Air Force during the Cold War that would have allowed for the detonation of a nuclear warhead on the moon.

The bomb was intended to be sent 238,000 miles to the moon where it would detonate upon impact. Reiffel noted that the decision to use a nuclear bomb was due to the fact that a hydrogen bomb, the most powerful in the U.S. arsenal, would have been too heavy to fly to space. The plan was eventually scraped after scientists working on the project raised concerns. America’s planning included calculations by astronomer Carl Sagan, then a young graduate student, of the behavior of dust and gas generated by the blast. According to the report, viewing the nuclear flash from Earth might have intimidated the Soviet Union and boosted U.S. confidence following the successful launch of Sputnik.

What a strange and insane country, this US of A....... :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\

Every single nuke we have, all exploded at once, would do next to nothing to the moon. Those impact craters you can see on the moon from the earth- those hits are MUCH bigger than all our nukes combined.

Why?

Reads in Dutcher's post the following:

"According to the report, viewing the nuclear flash from Earth might have intimidated the Soviet Union and boosted U.S. confidence following the successful launch of Sputnik."

You mean all 28 000(!) nukes that they possess?

I mean every single nuclear bomb on the planet. Nukes hit hard but they don't hit as hard as 50,000,000,000 tons travel at 17,000 miles per hour.

The moon would laugh at us if we started a fight.

A nuke would not do much in a vaccum without an atmosphere.  There is not enough atoms for a serious chain reaction to occur.  In space there is only one atom per 10 cubic centimeters of space.

You are so right, the reaction of a nuke is magnified by earths's atmosphere. On the moon the nuke would appear even weaker and the Soviet would probably laugh instead of being scared, it would be like throwing a grain of rice at a mountain, idiots, lol.. but the guys that made the Dragon ball series can blow up the moons with a Kami-hami-ha waive  ;D

As an American, I always just assumed the real Russians decided to go deep underground with their technology.  Everyone seems to think it takes money to build fukced up killing equipment. But I think all it takes is enthusiasm and about 1200 to 1500 calories per person a day.
