Not big on books huh Kwon?
I read alot of books when younger.
Those five books are they only ones you need though.
-
The Republic
Phenomenology of Spirit
Beyond Good and Evil
Les Particules élémentaires
The Lord of The Rings (whole saga, if not possible, the trilogy) on second thought, Ulises by Joyce.
Also "the complete works" of Gayspeare is cheating.

fuck the bible
There's no need to get apprehensive and insult the Holy Book. If you don't like it, keep it yourself, but insulting ones religion or the book from which they derive their ideas is primitive, and conduct unbecoming a gentleman. In addition, I'd appreciate if this thread stay on peoples list and not this, because we all know the power religion does to threads.

I edited my quote because you're right, it was disrespectful (also, you asked nicely). However, just by including the book on your list you will spark a huge debate anyway.

In spanish its written with an "i" so pardon me, Chomsky.

Don't know if Ulysses is worth all that much. I went to an exhibition in London a few years ago. They had first editions of the book, taken from Joyce's relatives. You could see most of the book was in pristine condition, only a few pages were turned, his relatives just didn't give a fuck.

ulysses is a decent book - worth reading for the three months in your life during which you think you're an intellectual.

You are dense as a fucking rock. I didn't intend to leave the spanish edition, I posted without proof-reading and didn't notice that I posted the first thing that came to mind (the spanish title without translating). ::)

I like how half these getbiggers are listing books well above their comprehension level. Might as well ask everyone here how much they bench and how much they make in a year. Sidebar: I would never recommend the Bible to ANYONE. Biggest waste of time EVER.

Agreed, most of those books are exceptionally useless as well. IT's like giving a alien race a copy of titanic to understand how things be.

A better question is what books one would leave for aliens to discover, assuming such aliens are intelligent and can engage in a bit of "radical interpretation":
On the Origin of Species by Some Dude
The latest edition of a quality mathematics textbook
The latest edition of a quality physics textbook
The latest edition of a quality linguistics textbook
The Language of Thought by Jerry Fodor
In other words, it would be a grab bag of our latest scientific understanding of the world to show that we weren't complete retards (since most of whatever else the aliens find will indicate as such). The first two will be a point of contact between the aliens and us, since presumably evolution via natural selection occurs on other planets, and because presumably mathematics is universal (though the aliens will probably use something other than base ten).

The Old Man and the Sea is the greatest book I have ever read.
Not really sure what the other 4 books would be though.
Does Flex Magazine count as a book?
-
I read alot of books when younger.
Ditto... I used to read stuff like Goosebumps as a kid and stuff like that. As a late teen/adult I read the odd book on bodybuilding or an autobiography but not much else. Somehow I feel dumber because of my lack of reading, which IMO is probably a symptom of a bigger problem which is not being able to focus very well on some things.
-
Dostoievsky- The Demons (often referenced as "The Possessed)

I read that years ago. A lazy aristocrat and his wise-cracking, thieving valet - hilarious. Not a lot of funny Russian books, but this is a good one.

It walks on that thin line between absurd and tragic, pretty much like in Gogol's work. And that zeitgeist of that era is beautifully transcribed I felt.
