Had the same dilemma myself regarding my sister, but as others had stated, the ipad is pretty much the standard. My advice is to just take a day and go around with your wife and try the diffrent tablets out. My sis, ended up with the Sony Xperia S1 (an andriod tablet) as she is not and apple fan, and did not like the OS of the surface-(she believed it was still to clunky, and she got burned by microsoft with regards to the Zune player.
Anyhow, at the Sonystyle store, The xperia tablet is priced (16gig. Model) as much as the ipad mini, until christmas, and you get a free cover.
Hope this helps.

my wife wants an iPad for Xmas, and so what do you guys recommend: iPad mini or iPad with Retina display?

Translate the text and you get the ten names the Gayor of bodybuilding has been demanding.

iPad.
1.) smooth GUI
2.) more apps
3.) better app versions
4.) no malware
5.) find my iPad
6.) apple care plus. Tech support and you can give it replaced for like 50 bucks or something. Women break shit.

The triangular one with the Mitsubishi badge.

the surface tablet is not selling well i would advise against it because microsoft might cancel it if sales do not increase in the long term, women love ipads because of the cool factor.

The Surface is a "me too" product. Here's why: 1) MS is a software company; their one real hardware product is the Xbox. They jumped into tablets because they saw the market (and money) running away without them and now they are crying "me too!" for attention. 2) It wasn't that long ago that MS execs were mocking the iPad and the idea of tablets as a fad that would soon fade into irrelevance. When that didn't happen they were left grinding their teeth and feeling like losers because they neither saw nor were prepared for consumer demand for a well executed tablet. Their idea of a tablet was the HP Slate. Remember that? If not, you are in good company. the Slate came and went like a puff of smoke. No one has one because no one wanted it: it was heavy, ugly and couldn't do much. Epic fail. ::)
The Surface is a very late effort to catch a train that has already left the station--and left MS behind.
Microsoft exec says tablets like Apple's iPad may be just a fad

Microsoft's chief research and strategy officer recently said he's not sure that devices like Apple's iPad will last, because he sees the smartphone as the true successor to the traditional PC...

I like my new samsung galaxy note 2 phablet...4g lte speed, great camera, 5.5" screen, etc. Might be a little big for a women to use as a phone.

More than likely, there is already a phone out that slots in to the back of a tablet screen that can be used both ways, thats probably the direction it will go

Grandpa used to use a Smith and Corona typewriter during World War II. Sometimes he would play practical jokes on the other soldiers by sending them letterheads with different Generals names on them, calling them to the Officers Quarters ASAP. Grandpa really knew how to be a practical joker.
