First Pearl Jam album was great, the following had some great tunes also but was less coherent. Alice as it's first incarnation was the best band considering the quality of their discography Eps included.

It's a tie for me.

Soundgarden or Alice in Chains.

Both were/are great.

Surprised no one has mentioned the Pumpkins yet...

Pumpkins was poppier at first then became just a bit snobbish and overblown with "Mellon Collie....". Corgan's voice is an acquired taste while Layne, Vedder are pretty much good t great rock vocalists to most.

One of his best songs IMHO. BTW, first album is way underrated (the one dj181 posted "The Loner" from), one of his best if not his best. His stuff with Buffalo Springfield has some great songs also and the CSN&Y "4th Way Street" is really highlighted by his presence.

I was waiting for Groink's 10-cent's worth.    ;D

/and neil is awesome. he may be loony like some caricature of a tortured artist, but is output is (still) varied and stellar.

I could go on all day, if these threads weren't obvious stabs at trying to get a nice thread under your belt

And i find it odd that "mr serious music" here doesn't like one of the best band of the last 20 years

NObody has mentioned Stone Temple Pilots?

Alice in Chains and Soundgarden were my 1a and 1b, while Pearl Jam is pretty damned up there.
The trouble with Pearl Jam is that their first album was so awesome, that some of their later offerings aren't perceived as well they should be, because they aren't "10".

Switch them and that's me.

I don't consider Pearl Jam a grunge band...They are a great rock band that happened to come along at that time. and they would have been HUGE but they didn't play ball in the slightest with their record company

Same with STP and Smashing Pumpkins, got lumped in with the grunge scene.

here's something interesting...Like "Evenflow" ? this came out about three years prior.

You could insert 50 other PJ songs that are better than Jeremy IMO. probably my least favorite.

Alice in Chains or SoundGarden. Both bands music stands up better in the long haul better than Nirvana in my opinion.

Dinosaur Jr deserves a bit too, they were on the softer end, but Mascis's guitar work, and the general sound is top notch -

.

.

Still held up many years later -

I hear some people
been talkin' me down,
Bring up my name,
pass it 'round.
They don't mention
happy times
They do their thing,
I'll do mine.

Walk on.

Mother Love Bone is very underrated.

This song by Days of the New is pretty good. Great lyrics as most people can relate to having a shelf in the room.

IMO pearl jam suck ass, for some reason I enjoyed Eddie Vedder's solo stuff though.

As for Neil Young, he's one of these artists I hear and see and wonder why there's so much hype around them. I just don't get it.
