yes, he used to post on ironage but hasn't been on in a long time, i'll have to find that mag and see how he was supposed to train, it was in MD so it might actually be factual.

Larry Scott had to play catchup to his triceps, they were his dominate feature before his biceps, when he first began getting serious about going further in BB'ing. Use to do regular dips and handstand work quite a bit. Gironda help the most with the bicep advice.

I remember a story that goes with that. After one of Larry's Weider photo shoots, the accompanying article addressed Larry's preacher curl photos, referring to them as "Scott curls" on the "Scott bench."
Upon his return, Vince - the egotist that he was - confronted Larry, who insisted it wasn't his idea, to which Vince bluntly replied, "Bullshit!"

i looked in his book beyond the universe, they have several pics of gyms. the one he started at leo stern's had hard wood floors, pearl owned several gyms one in manchester calif, one in pasedena, and his personal gym in a barn by his home where je still trains.here's a pic from one of them

that's the truth could never understand how his legs took off and overshadowed his upper body.

Yeah! And, I don't think it's because his upper body sucked, but rather his leg development was unprecedented.

great video...
Platz seems like a good guy and a very straight shooter who backs up what he says. I've heard that in his seminars years ago, he would openly and honestly answer anyone's questions, even regarding his AAS use.
I saw video of Tom training with Lee Priest from around 2008. Man, he still put in the intensity, and it's a real treat to watch him out there on the floor - very inspiring!

I love it!!
I've seen a clip of the extensions before, but never the whole segment. If that hamstring machine could, I'll bet it would have smoked a cigarette after Tom's set. ;D

In 1986 Platz was over here in England on a seminar tour and Peter McGough did an article on him for his Muscle Co mag,and everything you see him do in these training videos is what Peter described. He said at the time when most pro`s end a set is when Tom starts, and i can understand that now with all the partials, negatives, forced reps etc.

i know the pic i don't want to put it on here, i really don't know the back story at first i thought the women might be valerie coe but it's not. i think it was probably just something he might have shot in a foreign country figuring it would never get back here.jack lalanne and arnold both have pics out there they wish to recall.

vince gironda
So many trainers have credited Gironda over the span of decades, but where did Vince get his information? They didn't have the research and scientific knowledge back then - especially regarding training and exercise nutrition.
I can't believe that Vince acquired his entire base through trial and error.

just like bill pearl got started with leo stern, steve reeves with ed yarick, gironda was taught and became an instructor with the easton brothers who ran a gym in his area at the time.

funny how each area had their training sources esp early on, john farbotnik pic'd in this thread was said to have gone from 170 lbs up to 197 in 30 days to win the aau mr america, he was from philly so of course his training guru if you will was john frische. the first guys were said to do different exercises and than figure what each move worked and accomplished guys like sig klein, jack lalanne who actually invented some of the stuff in use today in one form or other. lalanne was said to have invented selectorized weight equipment which became the universal machine which his buddy borrowed and made a fortune out of that would be harold zinkin

That would explain the presence of the preacher bench in Vince's gym.

Don looked like he may have been a shade smaller than Vince's star pupil, Larry Scott, but both men had a very symmetrical structure. I believe I once read that Don deviated from Vince's diet advice during contest-prep by abstaining from the protein drinks, relying instead on liver tablets alone.

The Golden Eagle rocked a pretty good upper body in his youth. From the pic above, one would probably never have guessed he'd go on to be most famous for his wheels!
Its as if he didn't train legs in fear of affecting his height. Being shorter than my older brother I didn't start training with weights till I was about 20 cause I was always told I would no longer grow. Don't know if there's any scientific data to prove that but now its too late to go back in time even if its not true. :P
that's the truth could never understand how his legs took off and overshadowed his upper body.

I'm only guesstimating, but I'd say Don's around his late-40's there. Age is often hard to tell simply by looking at some people.

Spill the beans, man...
I know you've got the inside scoop somewhere in your knowledge bank. How did Mentzer TRULY train during his formative years? So many people dispute that he used his HIT methods, insisting instead that he relied on more conventional - some even claim "hypertrophy-specific" - training.
What's the deal?

from what i understand he was more into volume early on in his career and switched to HIT after he met and talked to art jones.he was good friends with david mastoriss from boston mass who also claims to have switched over to HIT or nautulis type training, only actually met mentzer once in allentown no less, he was from harrisburg area.d-mass is still around.

What's the deal?
from what i understand, he trained full-body 3 times per week doing one set til failure on about 15 exercises from 1974-1976
and then in 1977-1979 he trained 4 days per week on a 2-way split
day 1 was chest/tri/legs
day 2 was back/bi/delt
here he did about 4-6 failure sets per bodypart
-
also mentzer never counted his warmup sets in the plan he might have done 2-5 warm up sets but only counted 1or 2 heavy to failure sets as his workout sets.

true, he most likely did 3 or 4 warm-up sets for the 1st exercise and then 1 or 2 for all other following exercises

Zane is often criticized for being "small." Maybe he was in relation to guys like Arnold, and especially his later successors...but, Frank carried an appreciable amount of size. His biggest strengths were his shape, symmetry and lines.

You know what it is...
Its the guys who have 30-40 pounds of fat above the little muscle that they have saying stuff like that...that he was small.

but the sad thing is.... i tell myself gorgeous and slim sexy females get all hot and bothered when they see that bod, but in reality it's not so true :'( :'( :'(
case in point, i have or have had contact with a few slim gorgeous and sexy females, and when i show them that exact pic and ask them how they like and feel about it, they almost always say to me that he's a bit too big and too lean as well
and this is hard for me to fucking hear this coz i'm convinced that when sexy women (notice i'm only talking bout fit and sexy females here) see him they go crazy with lust, but that's not so much true :'(

true dat 8)
but the sad thing is.... i tell myself gorgeous and slim sexy females get all hot and bothered when they see that bod, but in reality it's not so true :'( :'( :'(
case in point, i have or have had contact with a few slim gorgeous and sexy females, and when i show them that exact pic and ask them how they like and feel about it, they almost always say to me that he's a bit too big and too lean as well
and this is hard for me to fucking hear this coz i'm convinced that when sexy women (notice i'm only talking bout fit and sexy females here) see him they go crazy with lust, but that's not so much true :'(
times and tastes change, but i never heard any one say this guy was ugly.

I've got to say every time I look at this thread it really inspires me to workout. Guys like Boyer Coe and Don Howorth just have beautiful proportional physiques.

Has anyone see the Master Mr O photos when Viator entered? I tried to find them but couldn't, I think it was one of the years that Big WooWee was competing.
