A guy at my gym advised flat benching for a year before going to inclines.

I'M WILLING TO BENCH PRESS LIKE A MANIAC IF IT MEANS HELPING ME PUNCH THE CRAP OUT OF ANYONE HERE.
bench press doesnt have nearly the sport specific value for boxing that you may think it does
push ups are better
because the serratus anterior gets involved in punching more than the pecs
(dont mind me just talking out of my ass)

Before you master the bench press, how about you master the ability to type without the Caps Lock key.

maybe so, but what's his PR in the mile?

Inb4 "Coach" chimes in with the actual muscles involved and how the snake oil techniques he teaches his fighters, like throwing tyres and lifting kettle balls (oh brother) are the most efficient way to increase punching power, when the only MMA experience Coach has is having Greek mens balls in his mouth while in a 69 down at the local bath house.

Im sure it can't hurt, but I'm not sure how much it will benefit you.
I've always heard "Punchers are born, not made"
Don't know how true that is either.

Punching hard is a demonstration of power not just strength. There are big bench guys that punch like pillows and some professional boxers with a huge punch that couldn't bench 250lbs. The physics are how fast you can unleash that strength that is an illustration of power. You would think power lifters doing their half hip lock squats with 800lbs could easily dunk a basketball yet many of them have a lousy vertical leaps because they don't have power. Olympic lifters have a vertical leap because they train for power accelerating the bar upward with their pull. The bench with your back braced against a bench is one of the most over rated exercises to increase athletic function. If you want to hit hard punch a heavy bag, explosive pushups, military presses, power jerks, medicine ball drills, and punching with elastic type bands.

In your opinion, is there any gain to be had from traditional lifts such as the bench? Is it true, that punchers are born and not made?

Punchers are born but you can improve your power with strength and conditioning exercises .

It's kind of like bodybuilding , I've always had shitty calves , I've improved them a lot but nobody is ever going to call me Matarazzo .
Guys like Julian Jackson are born not made ,it doesn't matter what workout you do , you'll never punch like this mofo .

This I know, I met some freakishly hard hitters and I never figured out where they got it from.
