DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Two fans are in critical condition, including one child, after a horrific crash on the final lap of the Nationwide Series race at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday.

Spending precious time watching cars circle around a track hundreds of times is so fulfilling and worthwhile.

shit, I learned to appreaciate this sport and I'm starting to like it.......it's not for everyone, but NASCAR is a popular American brand and it's seen in many countries as well.......I was watching that race live on ESPN when that final 4 laps resume and then BOOM.....it could have been worst and this was a freak accident......thank goodness no one spectator died and I'm sure NASCAR will compensate those injured.....still, racing is 10 times safer now than in the past....even from the drivers standpoint, the sport is safer than 13yrs ago.....there were drastic changes in the automobiles since Dale Eardheart Sr died at the Daytona 500 12yrs ago.....bottom line is, racing is a dangerous sport, but safety is better than it used to be

Correct.... After learning about those cars and what goes into getting those cars around the track at those speeds, I have a much healthier respect for the sport.

I've found there is no point in wasting time arguing with the "hurrr durrrr leffftttt turrrnnn" guys.

I heard they used to let people drive these cars in the race track with an instructor for about $150-$200 for  6 laps.not sure if that still exist. I have been to a daytona race 3 times before and it's a huge fucking event downthere....they always have some of those cars in display for the public outside the track and these are some of the loudest engines I've ever heard on a car....it's a screaming 800HP and to think that these guys are driving these rockets at close to 200MPH is awesome.....

NASCAR is in damage control mode. Tried making a person who took video of the crash take it down from YouTube, and claimed copyright infringement. Then claimed out of respect of the injured. Then YouTube put it back up.

Fact is, NASCAR cares more about the bottomline and Entertainment than about driver or fan safety.

How can anyone sit there for hours and watch a bunch of cars drive around in a circle? I'll never get it.

Then again, most people probably dont get how we watch the mr Olympia. So I guess it's all relative.

I usually watch the last 10-25 laps. Most of my interest in the sport came after seeing what went into building those motors and how much power they make with relatively old technology. (I should say the type of technology is old, but rest assured they use the latest and greatest of everything.)

take a look at the Group B rally cars, and the fatalities with that. People in the road just to look at the cars, and they get hit. Cars rolling off of hills, mountain slopes. 500 hp lightweight cars...

I agree, back at the 1999 Le Mans, when Mercedes CLR-GT1 flipped, they shut down the whole racing program. Nevermind, it was the flat bottom design and Porsche's GT1 flipped as well.

The Mille Miglia in Italy which was stopped in 1957 was dangerous as fuck.... Spectators were killed all of the time.

The last year of it I believe somewhere like 12 people died so they stopped it from there on.

yeah, i can't stand those racers who will just smash up everyone in the final lap cause they figure it's better not to be 6th.  So they will just cause a massive collision and hope they are the ones that limp out of it.  IMO, any racer that is shown to have purposefully clipped at a moment like this - knowing full well they'd be taking out a dozen cars at max speed - should have to take a year off.

ppl are in critical condition cause one of these pricks wasn't happy not being in 1st.

its a deadly sport. I posted an article written by an Indy car driver about how in shape one has to be to drive Indy/Champ, ralley, GT and F1...you don't have to be that in shape for NASCAR due to the oval racing. But those who race on circuits---street, etc., you must be in shape as the G forces from all directions take a lot out you. Formula 1 driver Jenson Button runs marathons.
The writer of the article had said that when he first tried out for a team, he was so unprepared for dealing with the g forces and man handling the car, that he stopped and gave an excuse that he had to pee. But he went to bathroom for a breather and to throw up.
Tony Stewart used to be in shape when he raced Champ/Indy, now as a NASCAR driver he's not that in shape.

This is actually true... I believe that sports should be man powered and have an offense and a defense.

That's a sport.

Any auto racing is a past time... A hobby... An event... Not a sport.

I don't know what it should be qualified as, a competition maybe?  But when you think competition, you usually think sports. Probably why it gets labeled as such.

I will admit, I've never watched it on TV, but have been to several races. It's all about drinking. It's also a good place to take clients if you're in an industry that has clients.

This is actually true... I believe that sports should be man powered and have an offense and a defense.

All 3 of those require offense and defense.

Are you such a dick rider that you want to follow me around to dislike every statement I make?

Sure seems like it.... For someone who in one thread talked about how someone is following you around, you sure are doing a good job of trying to ride the Tu jock.

as a side note, it is 50 degrees out here, and people are riding their sportbikes...
Joyriding SPORTbikes, is not a sport.

I think that's considered idiocy. Or lunacy.

You don't comprehend English very well do you?

I said... And you can plainly see it.

I read a lot of posts... It's a message board... That's what happens. Trust me... I don't read EVERY post you make. I'm sure you make tons of dumb posts that I just don't feel require a response.

I don't give a fuck what the world thinks about what a "sport" is... It's a fucking opinion. You don't agree with it, I don't give a shit. It's MY opinion that a sport requires an offense and a defense.

You want to say that other shit is sports, go right the fuck on... It doesn't matter one teeny little iota to me.

I will await your next response to some off the wall opinion I state and how you must "get me".

For someone who claims to not give a shit about other people, you sure all over what other people think around here.

Aren't you close to 40? Isn't that what you said once? Shouldn't you be at a point in your life where you realize that people have opinions and they don't have to necessarily be the same as yours?

So for the last time... Track and Field are athletic events... They are not sports... That's MY OPINION and if you don't agree... Who gives a shit.

Arguing about what's a "sport"... First world problems at it's finest.

1. Not sensitive... If that's what you consider a "personal remark" then you might need to find some thicker skin.
2. It's actually a picture of a pencil, not a pencil.
3. You realize you're still arguing about what I personally believe is a sport right?

Let me know how much rent I owe for taking up space in your mind "Groink".

HAHAHA!!! Dude... If you think I'm even remotely angry you're delusional.

I said an opinion, whether you agree with it or not does not matter to me.

I'm actually starting to like the new cars..a little bit...
I heard that they may try to bring German DTM over here...

the cars are pretty much an evolution of the species. Stock cars will always be big, heavy cars with gobs of horsepower and not enough tire. That's NASCAR and i for one enjoy it.

to the uninitiated, it's "going around in circles"...so much more than that is happening
