DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Two fans are in critical condition, including one child, after a horrific crash on the final lap of the Nationwide Series race at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday.
Twenty-eight people suffered some sort of injury. Fourteen were treated at the track, and 14 others were taken to hospitals.
-
that video looked painful. a bunch of jerks at that final lap, just ramming each other.
-
Spending precious time watching cars circle around a track hundreds of times is so fulfilling and worthwhile.

Oh shit.. a coworker of mine was working at that race this weekend.

Such a wonderful white trash sport
-
shit, I learned to appreaciate this sport and I'm starting to like it.......it's not for everyone, but NASCAR is a popular American brand and it's seen in many countries as well.......I was watching that race live on ESPN when that final 4 laps resume and then BOOM.....it could have been worst and this was a freak accident......thank goodness no one spectator died and I'm sure NASCAR will compensate those injured.....still, racing is 10 times safer now than in the past....even from the drivers standpoint, the sport is safer than 13yrs ago.....there were drastic changes in the automobiles since Dale Eardheart Sr died at the Daytona 500 12yrs ago.....bottom line is, racing is a dangerous sport, but safety is better than it used to be

Correct.... After learning about those cars and what goes into getting those cars around the track at those speeds, I have a much healthier respect for the sport.
I've found there is no point in wasting time arguing with the "hurrr durrrr leffftttt turrrnnn" guys.

I heard they used to let people drive these cars in the race track with an instructor for about $150-$200 for 6 laps.not sure if that still exist. I have been to a daytona race 3 times before and it's a huge fucking event downthere....they always have some of those cars in display for the public outside the track and these are some of the loudest engines I've ever heard on a car....it's a screaming 800HP and to think that these guys are driving these rockets at close to 200MPH is awesome.....

NASCAR is in damage control mode. Tried making a person who took video of the crash take it down from YouTube, and claimed copyright infringement. Then claimed out of respect of the injured. Then YouTube put it back up.
Fact is, NASCAR cares more about the bottomline and Entertainment than about driver or fan safety.

I did ten laps in a car at Charlotte a few years back. It was intense.

Of course. Welcome to big business broseph.

How can anyone sit there for hours and watch a bunch of cars drive around in a circle? I'll never get it.
Then again, most people probably dont get how we watch the mr Olympia. So I guess it's all relative.

maybe you should sponsor your own team in a few years?

I've noticed you, noticing me. Maybe when I sign you to my football team, and make a few million on jersey sales, we'll talk.

I usually watch the last 10-25 laps. Most of my interest in the sport came after seeing what went into building those motors and how much power they make with relatively old technology. (I should say the type of technology is old, but rest assured they use the latest and greatest of everything.)

are you trying to jinx the clowney?

Of course. Welcome to big business broseph.
and then you have Mercedes, and at the hint of a crash like this where fans are hurt, they pull the plug...reminds everyone of the 1955 Le Mans where over 80 people were killed.

Holy shit 500 injuries at Daytona!! :o
-
and then you have Mercedes, and at the hint of a crash like this where fans are hurt, they pull the plug...reminds everyone of the 1955 Le Mans where over 80 people were killed.
I watched a documentary on that race, pretty sad. It's unbievable how many people got taken out by the crash, but when you think of it, I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often.

Yeah, that's stupid IMHO... racing is dangerous, always will be. Shit happens. Can't freak the fuck out every time something bad happens and someone gets hurt.

take a look at the Group B rally cars, and the fatalities with that. People in the road just to look at the cars, and they get hit. Cars rolling off of hills, mountain slopes. 500 hp lightweight cars... Yeah, that's stupid IMHO... racing is dangerous, always will be. Shit happens. Can't freak the fuck out every time something bad happens and someone gets hurt.
I agree, back at the 1999 Le Mans, when Mercedes CLR-GT1 flipped, they shut down the whole racing program. Nevermind, it was the flat bottom design and Porsche's GT1 flipped as well.

The Mille Miglia in Italy which was stopped in 1957 was dangerous as fuck.... Spectators were killed all of the time.
The last year of it I believe somewhere like 12 people died so they stopped it from there on.

I do NOT want to be ANY where near ANY thing going 200mph

Especially not cars that weigh about as much as your average taxi? Lololol.

Danica just got top ten! 8th place!
you just said she got third? ???

Danica sucks. The only reason she's relevent is because she's a semi-attractive female.
And she's like 3'2" tall.

she has a HUGE marketing machine behind her. One would think that she is the only big name driver in the Daytona 500.

arce said she finished third so I paid my buddy $500 because I had a bet she would not be top 3. now he says eighth and my buddy won't give me my money back. >:(

she was apparently 3rd on the last lap, but ended up 8th.

Didn't that crash look like it was intentionally caused? Tapping the back of a car at an angle at that speed will spin the car.

duh! They tap on purpose...

yeah, i can't stand those racers who will just smash up everyone in the final lap cause they figure it's better not to be 6th. So they will just cause a massive collision and hope they are the ones that limp out of it. IMO, any racer that is shown to have purposefully clipped at a moment like this - knowing full well they'd be taking out a dozen cars at max speed - should have to take a year off.
ppl are in critical condition cause one of these pricks wasn't happy not being in 1st.
-
she dropped from third to eighth that is why I corrected it I had NO idea you were gambling he should give you your money back
-
it's ok. he's just kidding around. he'll give it back.

duh! They tap on purpose...
Duh, what are you special ed? I said intentionally.

It's called the bump and run. Try and bump em just enough to get them a little loose and then drive by.
-
she has a HUGE marketing machine behind her. One would think that she is the only big name driver in the Daytona 500.
Yes, NASCAR wants her to be good so fucking bad they can taste it... and even when they bend the rules to give her an advantage, she still sucks.
Bottom line - she fuckin' sucks. I feel there is better female drivers in the Truck circuit.
-
Duh, what are you special ed? I said intentionally.
No, you ask a question. Indicating that you were unsure.

she's got a lot to learn. she had a fast car all day and couldn't do anything with it at the end...better than last year though.
Contrast that with Johnson, didn't hear much about about him the entire race...then when there is 10 laps to go....Hello boys, I'll be passing you all now.
-
JJ is the man

Yeah, that's dudes SOP. Always picks it up when it matters. It's funny, because he may not be a front runner come time for the chase, and then BAM, turns it on.
Guy I know works for Hendrick, said Jimmy is one of the friendlier drivers as well.
-
No, you ask a question. Indicating that you were unsure.
oldtimer1 suffers from dementia. quit hassling him about shit he's forgotten.

Those fences look like the same kind of fencing you'd see at any city park.

Hendrick has the best crews... Period.
You get on with them and your car is going to be in the front EVERY week.
They know how to squeeze every last bit of speed out of a car.

I've raced Daytona a couple times.....on a motorcycle. :o

She ran a suprisingly good race for herself...she also got caught behind the wrong car when Dale made his move and lost her placing.

most are waiting for a crash or 2
-

shit, I was hoping she'd win....it looks like she got block from inside....I thought she was gonna make a move....there was no one from her team to block for her it seems like.....shit, in 3rd place with 3 laps to go, I really thought she had a chance
-
If it has a motor, it ain't a sport.
its a deadly sport. I posted an article written by an Indy car driver about how in shape one has to be to drive Indy/Champ, ralley, GT and F1...you don't have to be that in shape for NASCAR due to the oval racing. But those who race on circuits---street, etc., you must be in shape as the G forces from all directions take a lot out you. Formula 1 driver Jenson Button runs marathons.
The writer of the article had said that when he first tried out for a team, he was so unprepared for dealing with the g forces and man handling the car, that he stopped and gave an excuse that he had to pee. But he went to bathroom for a breather and to throw up.
Tony Stewart used to be in shape when he raced Champ/Indy, now as a NASCAR driver he's not that in shape.
-
If it has a motor, it ain't a sport.
This is actually true... I believe that sports should be man powered and have an offense and a defense.
That's a sport.
Any auto racing is a past time... A hobby... An event... Not a sport.

so track and field isn't a sport ?
or swimming?
-
I don't know what it should be qualified as, a competition maybe? But when you think competition, you usually think sports. Probably why it gets labeled as such.
I will admit, I've never watched it on TV, but have been to several races. It's all about drinking. It's also a good place to take clients if you're in an industry that has clients.
-
so track and field isn't a sport ?

Nope... They are physical activities... Not sports.
Notice how they call them the "Olympic Games"?
Because that's what those things are... Games... Not sports.

so then I guess Boxing isn't a sport, or Soccer ? or Hockey ? those are Olympic "games"
you really will argue anything to the point of making a fool of yourself.

You don't comprehend English very well do you?
I said... And you can plainly see it.
This is actually true... I believe that sports should be man powered and have an offense and a defense.
All 3 of those require offense and defense.
Are you such a dick rider that you want to follow me around to dislike every statement I make?
Sure seems like it.... For someone who in one thread talked about how someone is following you around, you sure are doing a good job of trying to ride the Tu jock.

I read a lot of posts... It's a message board... That's what happens. Trust me... I don't read EVERY post you make. I'm sure you make tons of dumb posts that I just don't feel require a response.
I don't give a fuck what the world thinks about what a "sport" is... It's a fucking opinion. You don't agree with it, I don't give a shit. It's MY opinion that a sport requires an offense and a defense.
You want to say that other shit is sports, go right the fuck on... It doesn't matter one teeny little iota to me.
I will await your next response to some off the wall opinion I state and how you must "get me".
For someone who claims to not give a shit about other people, you sure all over what other people think around here.
Aren't you close to 40? Isn't that what you said once? Shouldn't you be at a point in your life where you realize that people have opinions and they don't have to necessarily be the same as yours?
So for the last time... Track and Field are athletic events... They are not sports... That's MY OPINION and if you don't agree... Who gives a shit.
Arguing about what's a "sport"... First world problems at it's finest.

the cars are pretty much an evolution of the species. Stock cars will always be big, heavy cars with gobs of horsepower and not enough tire. That's NASCAR and i for one enjoy it.
to the uninitiated, it's "going around in circles"...so much more than that is happening
