A pretty north-amero-centric listing.  You'd think more Olympic Decathlon winners would make the list?

Also missing from list:

yeah but in those 5 minutes what he did was ridiculous.

his last season at 27 years old, before he got hurt, really shows what he could have become. The dude was just hitting his prime

.272 and 28 homers in 110 games, and an amazing fielder with a howitzer for an arm

700 yards and a 5.6 avg.  in 10 games and ran motherfuckers over

i know he didn't have longevity, but you can't fuck with what he did do. nobody on that list can

yeah, but there has to be something said for longevity.

Suppose a guy named Cam Newton threw for 422 yards in his first rookie game.   Then he broke his leg in practice that week and never touched a football again.

I'd shit my pants in protest to see him on that list :)

To be considered as best of all time you have to have longevity and consistency.

And he didn't - due to injuries. Such is life.

i said one of the best.......he is right up there.....not many will argue that fact......as for the very best......maybe barry sanders or jim brown.....but sayers is in the discussion. that knee injury cut his career short......but he was outstanding for about 9 years.

Objectively it is hard to go past Don Bradman. In a sport (cricket) of over 100 years of detailed records and played by multi-millions of people his batting average is so far above the statistical mean as to make arguments against emotion-based

I would have liked to see Joe Frazier in there,

Guy was a true warrior, his heart, will and determination will never be seen in the heavyweight division again.

Won a gold medal in the 1964 olympic games, fought with a busted thumb in the final.

Undisputed Heavyweight Champ

First fighter to beat Muhammid Ali in 1971

Took part in one of the greatest fights of the 20th century "Thrilla in Manilla"

Frazier and Ali battered each other round after round until Eddie futch stopped the fight at the beginning of round 15,
Frazier protested but futch put his hand on Joe and said "Its all over son, nobody will ever forget what you did here today"

Unfortunately for Joe he will forever be in Ali's shadow...

Do they really think some dude who plays golf is one of the greatest athletes?  Golf is a skill not a sport.

As for baseball players as John Kruk said "Lady, I'm not an athlete. I'm a professional baseball player."

The list should be the most famous not the greatest or it would look drastically different

Donald Dinnie is the best athlete in history.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Dinnie

Dinnie became an all-round athlete, growing and building his skills over a 20-year reign as Scottish champion (1856–1876). He excelled in sprint, hurdles, long and high jump, pole vault, putting the stone, hammer throw, tossing the caber and wrestling. Comparing his best performances, which took place long before the Athens Olympics of 1896, leads one to imagine him capable of winning seven gold, a silver, and a bronze medal. However, by 1896, Dinnie was approaching the twilight of his sporting career.

Dinnie was a 19th-century superstar, with widespread fame, success, and riches. Dinnie held the title "World Champion Wrestler", and obtained the unofficial titles of "Greatest Athlete in the World", and "Strongest Man in the World". He was so well known that "heavy artillery shells in the First World War were nicknamed 'Donald Dinnies.'"[2] This man brought fear into the United States. Not only did he intimidate the American strongmen, but in addition he also captured most of the world's attention as well. His documented achievements worldwide consist of "2,000 hammer throwing contests, over 2,000 wrestling matches, 200 weightlifting contests, and about 500 running and hurdle events.

As Scotland's greatest athlete, Dinnie competed in sixteen Highland Games seasons in his native land. He first toured the United States' Caledonian Circuit in 1870.[2] In that year he earned a fortune. Dinnie, then thirty-three, was titled "The Nineteenth Century's Greatest Athlete". However, others despised and criticized Dinnie for his incredible strength. He continued to tour, and in his 60th year he was in New Zealand and Australia as a successful professional athlete.

Donald continued to be involved in theatres and at Highland Games as a judge, or in veteran events, until 1912. In 1903 Robert Barr invited him to endorse his soft drink Iron Brew, using Donald's image on the label with Donald proclaiming "I can recommend BARR's IRN BRU to all who wish to aspire to athletic fame, signed Donald Dinnie, All-round Champion Athlete of the World."[2] Later in Donald's life he struggled financially, and in his 70's was still performing as a strongman in London. His act was to support a platform made from a large table while two Highlanders danced a "fling" on it. Eventually London authorities terminated his performing licence because of his advanced age.

Dale ? You are out of your fucken mind, race car drivers are fucken amazing athletes, there bodies are tensed up and contracted the entire race, you have to be in damn good shape to endure what they go through

Very true...!!

Especially the F1 drivers....they have to be in top shape..they endure a whole bunch of gss

It is insane, these guys average 130-140 heart rate the entire race, not to mention it is like a sauna in there. Then they take corners and accelerate at 5 gs to 6 gs contracting every muscle in their body, meanwhile the average person would pass out with that amount of force. Some of these guys are crippled after the races and need a few days for their body to recuperate, they are as athletic as they get.

Rally drivers are in top shape too, they have to race all day long in a variety of surfaces like snow or in sizzling heat like the Acropolis Rally or (in older days) the Safari Rally.
The Dakar racers go through a lot too, especially the motorcycle riders.

suprise suprise The best athletes in the world are in the nfl and are all black :o.....

take the two above out...baseball is a nice mix.

Id probably go with jose conseco in his prime....pretty much a bigger faster stronger version of arod. ...6'4 240 pounds and the dude was running a consistent 6.4 in the 60 yard dash consistantly...for a guy 6'4 thats fucking unheard of.

all time?  Im pretty close with a VERY well former outfielder of the dodgers you older guys  have probably heard of him dude was real big in the 80's........me and a few buddies were  all eating at some italian restuarant and i asked him who the fastest player he's ever seen was.? He said mantle was timed in a drag bunt at  2.9 seconds when he was a kid first came up........story where he hit a homerun 450 feet with one arm was legit too.....also said that everyone was  convinced he was an alien or something cause he was the strongest fastest guy in the game......at 19 years old

oh look its gthang.... god forbid your racist ass isnt talking about basketball football or track.

do you really think if Alex Rodriguez wanted to he couldn't have made a decent quarter back in the nfl ;D? Most baseball players are horrible athletes but the point is that in every sport there are exceptions and  there are freaks that slip up on the scene.

carl crawford heard of him?  ...ran the 60 in 5.9 seconds... thats like world class speed. the game has changed bro

Bo Jackson played MLB for 8 seasons....he hit 141 home runs and batted .250. He was not a perennial All Star. In clutch games he was never more than a big K.

Herschel Walker was arguably the greatest college football player ever - he was virtually unstoppable at UGA. If you add his USFL stats (even discounted) to his NFL totals, he is a HOF. He was a track star, Olympic bob sledder, and is now an accomplished martial artist. Shit, he rushed for 2,400 yards in a season once.

Jackson is remembered for being better than he was because fans never had to witness his decline. It's a nice story and the "Bo knows" commercials were funny, but he wasn't the demi-god that people are making him out to be.

What way?

Did he hit 600 home runs? Did he hit 600 foot home runs? Did he lead the NFL in rushing? Did he win any championships?

He got maximum exposure out of two NFL runs on national TV. Jim Brown and Earl Campbell ran over more people than Bo Jackson ever imagined.

He was a tremendous athlete, but certainly not the greatest athlete of all time.

People forget that the U.S. government jailed Muhammad Ali during the prime of his career. So I'd have him, Jordan and Carl Lewis over Bo Jackson.

he hit the longest home run in Royals stadium history. he also hit a shot while trying to call time-out. he had ridiculous power.

Let's not forget throwing speedster Harold Reynolds out at home plate from the warning track, or running up the wall.

his average went up every year he played, along with his homer total...until he got hurt.

he hit .272 with 28 homers in 110 games in his last Healthy baseball season, and made the all star game. Where he hit a moon shot, stole a base and made a sick catch in the outfield...and was named MVP

Ran the fastest 40 time ever recorded at the NFL combine

averaged 5.4 yards a carry for his NFL career, which is Hall of fame caliber

The thing with Bo is he did Amazing things, that made you say "Holy Shit!" because they were pure athletic ability, hence the title "best athlete ever" .

And he didn't have the benefit of a full offseason from either sport, he went straight from baseball into football, which makes what he did even more remarkable.

Bo jackson could have been a HOF baseball player, or a HOF football player.  he did both at a very high level and was only getting better when he got that injury.

and that's not wishful thinking, it's what happened.

Give me Herschel Walker's Ten Most amazing sports moments

somewhat agree... incredible strength, flexibility, coordination.

there's two ways to rank this, either by athletic traits or by sports performance.  if ranking by athletic traits, the best athlete should score highly in all athletic attributes... like strength, size, flexibility, speed, dexterity, intelligence, endurance

if ranking purely by sports performance, obviously someone like michael jordan, wayne gretsky, tiger woods, michael schumacher, ray robinson, etc. would win.

personally, i would choose the first method, and would never rank any of those people "best ever".  but the athletic traits method is tough too, because not all of the traits develop independently.  you end up having to choose between, say, big, strong athletes and small, agile ones.

It's the old "longevity" argument. which is pointless.

if MJ, Carl lewis, Herschel Walker et all got injured after 5 seasons, nobody would know who they are right now, the fact that Bo is even in the argument says all you need to know

PS Michael jordan tried to take a page out of Bo's book and play baseball..he was an abysmal failure. Bo was an all star.
