Title: WWE wrestlers and steroids/drug addiction
Post by: AlphaMaleDawg on March 06, 2013, 05:55:36 AM
So we all know in the 80s and 90s, there was massive steroid use along with painkillers and other prescriptions drugs or street drugs. Anyone here ever seen any of this shit happen first hand back then? Usually on every board, there are a couple of guys who have inside info. I am also interested in how they keep taking roids when they travel literally every day on airplanes.

Also, they usually don't fly, it's not balling like NFL or NBA.

I remember watching a documentary on it years ago.  Most of them traveled by bus unless they were going overseas.  Some had roadies that moved their drugs for them, just like most bands.  The majority of the big name guys had serious drug problems, some due to years of injuries and "the show must go on" attitude.

Back in the 80's in Calgary, all the wrestlers in the Stampede Wrestling circuit here were driving to their various wrestling cards.   They couldn't afford to commute via plane.   Therefore, they took all their gear with them.  They would pile into a couple of vans with a cooler of beer, a few loafs of bread, and some bologna, and off they'd go.   When several of more popular wrestlers (Dynamite Kid, Brett Hart, Davy Boy Smith, Chris Benoit, Bad News Allen, Jim Niedhart, Brian Pillman, etc) got contracts in the WWF, they had to make different arrangements for their steroids, as they could not travel with the gear they needed.   I still remember when Chris Benoit and his wrestler buddy Ben Basarab would show up at our high school in Calgary in their beat up piece of shit car twice a month to sell our football team steroids and bennies.  (amphetamines)  This was before Benoit got signed with WWF.  He was juicing for years before he got into the WWF.   Was making a great living selling gear to the high school kids here in Calgary back in the 80's.

Also, they didn't fly everywhere. For a while, the WWF guys only flew if the trip was something like more than 300 miles. I'm not sure how it works now. Often, the towns were booked in order of proximity.

Stampede Wrestling had a standard loop they'd run with most of the guys traveling by van. During the harsh winter months, Stu didn't even run shows in certain Canadian towns because the snow made it impossible to get the ring truck and van there.

The AWA had their own piece of shit plane to transport their wrestlers when needed. Most of the boys were terrified to fly on it, especially after Mad Dog Vachon once opened the hatch while they were in the air.

As for today, most of those guys I'm sure have connections within the company.
It used to be a promotion/territory had one ring truck that would transport the ring, steps, guardrails, and crew. Today, WWE is a huge-scale production with stages, lighting, pyro, jumbo-trons, etc. There are so many stage crew workers and trucks that travel by ground, it wouldn't surprise me if guys on some of those trucks are also transporting PED's for the select few who somehow work around the "Wellness Program."

Some legendary stories about traveling via car/bus with Andre The Giant from some of the old timers.

I wonder what guys do today since they actually do have to fly every day, unlike the old days supposedly.

orals are easy...but can you really get oils in your carry on? Of course sneaking in check in luggage is easy, but carry on?

Why would you need to carry on any kind of aas related drugs? It's not like they are going to be shooting up in the bathroom for a 3 hour flight.  ::)

I bet most of them don't want to check in luggage so they only do carry on, that's why.

Not difficult to get juice on the plane now, just put everything in the checked luggage. Orals can be taken in weekly pill holder thingys and carried on, never a problem here.
