Title: Alcohol diminishing gains from the gym
Post by: Papper on March 11, 2013, 08:51:28 PM
Alcohol is not beneficial in bodybuilding, we all know. But some say it's fine in moderation and others say it is the worst thing when training.

Now I'm interested to hear if anyone has actually cut it out completely for several months and kept everything else the same. People who used to drink like me, a lot each weekend.

I'm at a point now where I can't really drink at all but workout in the same pace as before.

Did it really make any difference in your gains? What's your take? Like to hear from naturals as well.

I've found that 2-3 glasses of wine... a few nights a week... really slows me down.

I've found that ZERO wine is fine, but I get all tight in the chest, I get a little annoyed with things, I get frustrated.

I've found that ONE glass of wine - and just one - maybe 2-3 nights a week is great for lowering the blood pressure, letting me unwind and kick back for an hour (i'm typically working or moving 24/7 when i'm not sleeping).

I've drank heavily 3 days a week for the last month.. Gains are still good and my abs are almost better than before I started this binge drinking. Working out hungover sucks though.

Yes I got drunk often while training regularly. Hard to say what effect it had though. I got drunk more often as a natural and that hurt a bit if bulking. I still do it sometimes but the hangovers are a pain in the ass. Sorry I offered basically no help to your initial question

I use to drink but it only harms the body. Smoke some weed instead lol its safer and nice after a bad ass workout than eat your steak and sweet potatoe or whatever. Feels good!!!

As a drinker, I can say it's the effect of alcohol that makes you drink. It takes you through what surely everyone perceives as bad tasting beverage at first. Nobody likes vodka for the delicious flavor. Later you associate the taste with good times and that makes it taste good. An acquired taste, simply put.

Yeah I'd like to smoke some than I do, but it's not accessable here and carries risk in purchasing, and also is very taboo if you get caught by colleagues and family.

But yet with all the taboo shit, people smoke all the time at their jobs. Joe Blow that can drink 30 beers pretty easily can't have one at work.

I was a big fat drunk for more years than I care to remember. Did find my way to the gym most days though. But by far the best gain /fat loss I ever had was when I quit cold turkey for 9 months.

Why blame alcohol, while half of you morons smoke before and after workout? You work out, waiting the moment when your body has the highest need to oxygen in the blood stream, and light the cigarette. Then you fill your blood with carbon oxide, not with oxygen, and feel smart, talking about the risk what alcohol maybe makes to your training. In real life fact at the matter is this: No smoking, no weed, no alcohol, never. How fun that will be?  ;D

Agree 100%.  I can't stand the taste of any alcohol, taste like bitter garbage, wine, beer, all of it.

Well I don't smoke anything if you referred to me. Maybe one or two cigarettes per year and have tasted a couple of joints.

I'd never ever stop drinking and partying though, life is more than "bodybuilding" and that's for sure ;D

Nobody gives a fuck how it tastes except girls. The purpose of drinking it is the wonderful feeling you get from it.

Enjoy getting hammered while you're young and can still get away with it. The older you get the bigger the hangovers...will make you think twice before pounding back drinks.

Whatever you say, "Alpha" Male Dawg  :-\

Wonderful feeling? You mean the upset stomach and the puking and vomiting, which happens to a lot of people who drink.

If you're talking about a buzz, different story, though most people just dont stop at a buzz.

I enjoy it - immensely - but I'm not young and my hangovers are not pleasant at all. Have to think twice every time and make sure I have nothing of importance the following 1-2 days.

I will be very curious to see if my tolerance level for alcohol will drop after my refrain though!

Your tolerance will drop...even more if you lose weight. And if you can still gain as a natural depends on how long you've been training and your age....not so much your drinking habbits. Same way with hangovers here btw...completely useless for a day or two.

Of course I was talking about the buzz son. A strong buzz that is. Who said anything about puking? That's just childish

The bigger I've gotten, the more money it costs for me to get drunk. It fucking sucks having to spend $100 at the bar just to get that perfect feeling

this is the truth.   When I was 25, I'd have nights where I'd put away 10 drinks, sleep and feel crappy for a day, and that's it.

Ten years later?  I had my last BIG drinking night like 2 years ago (when I drank enough to vomit) and it was the worst 24 hours of my life afterwards.  NEVER again will I drink more than 3-4 in ANY night.  Period.   Two is my usualy max, just catch a buzz and stop there.  Being "DRUNK" is pointless.  It def hurts more as you age.

Yeah that is sort of what I thought personally. That it doesn't matter much in the grand scheme unless you drink every day.

A hangover can be really bad if you have to do something of importance, but a medium hangover is okay if you're objective for the day is to watch a movie and eat a pizza.

It gets bad for me when I do shots, whisky and wine. Beer is okay.

If you came to Erie, PA I could get all of getbig drunk for that much money lol.

Its the only benefit people usually can list about living here, minus the summers...

Good call. In hindsight I think the worst hangovers I experienced was when I drank too much (obviously), mixed hard liquor, with beer, cider and +4 glasses of wine.

I hated the taste of alcohol years ago but then I forced myself to drink it and pretend to like it so I could keep up with the cool crowd.  I get violent around women and children now.

I don't know if I've ever had a hangover in my life... even with puking and everything.  Definitely never got a headache from alcohol, and usually I feel 100% the next day.

Alcohol REALLY bothers my stomach though.  I rarely drink, and when I do even the first shot can make me feel like vomiting...  then I put down five more and feel fine :D

If I stop around 5 or 6 that's good... usually I'm none too careful, however.
