You have to be a naive and ignorant bastard to trust any government ever. Government is inherently evil and should be limited to only the most basic and essential roles.
-
A government is meant to carry out basic functionality and work for the betterment of society.
1. Build roads
2. Law enforcement
3. Military
4. Public health: water, medical, cleaning, mail
4. Collect tax just enough to meet those needs.
* there is more but you get gist.
The problem that we know have is that the government is so large and out of control that it is an entity beholding only to itself. An example being that congress can and do give themselves raises without the general public having the ability to stop them. Americans look for the government for solutions instead viewing the government as device/tool of the people.
Why can't we pass a law that says that the federal budget has to be less than taxes collected?
Why can't we pass a law that says the federal government has to use materials (food, devices, cars, paper, phones, et al) 100% manufactured in the USA?
Why can't we pass a law that says that the US Government cannot borrow money.

I'd bet that 20% of the 30% who say they do trust the government, only do so because they fear the government.
