They were bare knuckle, the hand usually breaks before the head does....i know i can hit harder with a glove on.
There is legitimate scientific evidence that bringing back bare knuckle boxing would result in less brain damage for boxers....its only prudish Victorian era sensibilities that saw fighters glove up, apparently the crowds in those days didnt like the bloodshed that comes with bare knuckle bouts.....so now we protect the hands of fighters to the point they can pummel an opponents head for 40 mins with no let up in power or consequences to themselves.

If you hit someone hard on the button you can knock them out, gloves or not.

It has to be spot on....i've boxed muay thai for years and had a few fights outside the gym as a younger man and never been KO'd despite being hit all over the head and face....a light punch on the right spot can cause a KO, the punch has to disrupt the Reticular Formation in the brain stem to KO somebody, this isnt always as easy as it sounds....the best way to disrupt this area of the brain stem is to subject it to a twisting motion which is why jaw shots that spin the head work so well....but simply straight punching somebody despite the accuracy being there is often futile and the fight will be decided by whoever can take the most pain.
