Title: Wesley Snipes - Free at Last
Post by: bradistani on April 05, 2013, 05:12:57 PM
i liked snipes.. i hope he can make somewhat of a comeback!!! wonder how broke he is now though ! ???

Wesley Snipes released from prison after serving three years for tax evasion (just in time for tax day!)

After nearly three years in prison, Wesley Snipes is almost free man.

The Blade star was released this week from a Pennsylvania prison and transferred to house arrest after being admitted in 2010 on charges of federal tax evasion.

According to TMZ, the 50-year-old actor left the McKean Federal Corrections on Tuesday, several months shy of his 36 month sentence.

Snipes is no longer listed as an inmate at the rural facility, and is now listed on the website of the Federal Bureau of Prisons as being  under the watchful eye of the New York Communty Corrections Office.

Officers will keep a watchful eye on the actor as he finishes out his sentence under home confinement, which the FBP lists as July 19.

His release is -- ironically -- just two weeks before tax day.

The Passenger 57 actor was found guilty of not paying as much as $15million in dividends to the government for his earnings from 1999 to 2001.

His lawyers argued that his tax advisers, Douglas P. Rosile and Eddie Ray Kahn, who were also jailed, had duped their client with a claim that there were no laws requiring him to pay tax.

Out of jail: Wesley Snipes was released from prison after serving a three-year sentence for tax evasion

Charges: Prosecutors claimed Snipes defrauded the government of $15million over three years

He also expressed to CNN's Larry King that he was 'nervous' of his impending stay at the minimum security white-collar facility, which works its inmates from dawn until dusk doing chores such as landscaping and food service.

He was also given limited contact with his family -- he is the father of five children -- as inmates only have 300 minutes of call time per month and conjugal visits were not allowed.

'I think any man would be nervous,' Snipes said.

Roles: Snipes is best known for playing Blade in the trilogy of the same name

'Given the length of time that they are suggesting that I be away from my family, away from my profession, away from my ability to provide for my family and for those who have depended upon me to contribute to society... I think anyone would be nervous about that.'

While in prison Wesley had tried to appeal his sentence to the Supreme Court, but was turned down and ordered to finish out his term.

No word yet on how soon before Snipes jumps back into acting.

The Florida-born performer is best known for his roles in Jungle Fever, Blade and White Men Can't Jump.

Like I always said, I'm more afraid of owing the government money than people on the black market. The government only hustles quickly when people owe them money.

The govt is always going to go after high profile tax evaders.  They want others to know why they are sending money to the Treasury dept.

This.  It wasn't he owed them money, but he and his accountant filed two retursn and got over 9M$ in false returns.  No way they were going to let a high profile personality slide on that one.  Anyway, Tyson owes them over $20M.  What jail is he in?

Good for him. Look for him to churn out straight to DVD movies, ala Steven Segal, to make some extra coin in no time.

Blade VS Yuri Boyka : Blade 4 VS Undisputed 4

He too old to play Black Panther / Luke Cage though, Michael Jai White could do that

yeah, I was thinking Michael Jai White as well...

Wesley could play Afro-Samurai or Looper 2
Wasn't there something about that the writers for Expendables were waiting for his release so that they could write him a part?

He's going to have to make a lot of  crap movies to pay that tax bill. No one is going to pay a past their prime action movie star a lot of money.

In a perpetual one, but in his mind..

Jokes aside, I recently saw his one-man show and he mentioned in the show that he owes the IRS close to 10 Million dollars and that every sent he makes from these nationwide shows goes directly to the IRS. He gets to keep nothing and that was part of the agreement he made with the IRS/government in order to not face jailtime.

Fucking scumbag.

Wesley needs to learn a thing or two about patriotism from American stalwarts like former Republican presidential nominee, Mitt Romney: you're supposed to act against the spirit of the law, not the law itself (the spirit will get mad if it finds out but because it is immaterial it is unable to harm you -- it might ethereally whisper obscenities into your ear on tax day, but that's about it).

Sneaking carried interest into retirement accounts so that profits blow up tax-free, hiding assets in overseas accounts, and deploying an array of complex accounting tricks concocted by a team of full-time tax evasion specialists is the true and proper procedure for patriotic wealthy persons in America.

Mitt did nothing illegal and it's the same thing all those $30,000 a plate dinners attendees Obama had used to get elected did too. If you use your capital gains through an inheritance of a house or you use a 401 type retirement account you pay taxes at the same rate as Mitt. Just because his retirement account tax deferred account is bigger than yours isn't hiding money from the government.  His tax rate through gains in investing are the same as yours. He just pays a ton in taxes and you don't because you're not rich.

Mitt did nothing illegal

I don't see the point in repeating something I've already said.

and it's the same thing all those $30,000 a plate dinners attendees Obama had used to get elected did too.

"Other people are doing it too, so it's ok." You don't have to admit as much in a response -- and I know that you won't anyway -- but this is terrible reasoning.

If you use your capital gains through an inheritance of a house or use a 401 type retirement account you pay taxes at the same rate as Mitt.

Your sentence is ambiguous: it could mean that my effective tax rate would be the same as Willard's if I utilized these investing methods, or that the rates I'd pay on the profits from these investing methods would be the same as Willard's. The former claim is demonstrably false -- Willard payed a 14.1% effective rate in 2011 due to a variety of accounting tricks that do nothing to create further value and which drastically lower his rate below most persons' -- and the latter is irrelevant.

My point pertains solely to effective tax rates and how certain people have access to resources which enable them to violate the spirit of the current tax regime, one that is ostensibly progressive -- plus, how these people are treated as somehow different in kind than those who are too stupid to properly carry out tax avoidance (Snipes).

Just because his retirement account tax deferred account is bigger than yours isn't hiding money from the government....He just pays a ton in taxes and you don't because you're not rich.

Attacking me personally isn't going to make your point any more plausible, to say nothing of the fact that insults tend not to stick when they are incorrect.

His tax rate through gains in investing are the same as yours.

What has he payed on the carried interest profits that are stowed in that IRA? How about on the capital in a variety of overseas tax shelters?
