Keep to a minimum as you are you dont need a church to do the right thing, what pisses me off about churches is they teach not being materialistic then build these huge ass buildings and ask for your money.

I've always thought about that too. It's the same as politics, a supposedly positive thing goes awry. Now being a politician is a job rather than something people do to communicate desires and problems with others. Like you said, the churches are more like businesses than a place to go share your "faith". The whole thing with the massive buildings and asking for money is so true, it's like a pissing contest between various churches at times.

Exactly, I realized this as a kid my grandmother took me to church and I am like why do these people asking for money, they pay no taxes and most buildings and such have been given to them when they started. Baseline you can follow any religion you want from your home and just be a good person. I rest my case.
-
I"ll attend the church's where I grew up bc they are still small community type church and everybody is welcome no matter what, but that's about it.
These other places are a who's who event now. Fashion show at some places. Very rarely do you feel you are amongst brethren. More like you are being judged because you missed a collection, not dressed up, are new, parked in somebody's spot who thinks they own the joint, fake people..etc

That chair/throne the pope is sitting in could probably feed an entire 3rd world country. Does he really need to sit in something that looks like that? Talk about vanity.

The Catholic Church is the richest organisation in the World and they preach not being materialistic. Am I the only one who sees the evil hypocrisy in this. Why do people keep going, are they so dumb they can't see through all this shite!

X2 if a guy has religion then it´s ok. I grew up with the hate between Catholics and Prodistants and later saw the real hate in Belfast. My Father did not like Catholics and was a staunch Mason and all were very close knit. i know i wrote this before but my best friend was catholic. stop the hate bros.

In America, a lot of church's have a "Come as you are policy", because a lot of people say that they don't have money for a suit or dress. And the church is desperate to get them in.
But, these same people have enough money to buy drugs, tattoos, cable, and new Jordans...
-
That is fucking hilarious.

Went one Sunday and the church had Mike Murdock as a guest minister that day. For those that don't know Mike Murdock is a prosperity preacher along the likes of Oral Roberts, Kenneth Hagin, Kenneth Copeland, Creflo Dollar etc..Anyway he does his whole God wants you to be rich schtick, plays the piano and hawks his "prosperity keys" book for a 50.00 "love seed". You could also buy the book for 8.00 and his Millionaire course pack, after the service as they had a booth set up in the main hallway. All in all when they took up an offering for him he took in over 30k.. yes that's right over 30,000 IN CASH for an hours work of preaching. The reason i know this is because the pastor of the church was upset the following sunday because the church's regular offering was a lot less than what Mike Murdock got for his offering that night. So the pastor made a new rule. There would be seperate lines for what ever you had to give each Sunday. A line for tithes..A line for offerings.. and another line for what ever you wanted to give again. I remember one Sunday He had six individual lines for people who wanted to give 100 bucks on down to a penny. REDICULOUS..
-
All i can say is my best friend was Catholic and i liked him..drunk..got stoned...fought against other guys with him..a true friend...i like Steve who writes on the mature thread and who is catholic and i can read into his posts that he is a Family man and loves his Family..THAT IS IMPORTANT.

these lines are nothing new---go to those Mega-churches, you'll see more people trying to buy their way into heaven...The preachers are scammers, it's one of the reasons why Michael Baisden has a term "Pimps in the Pulpit"...
To me, the preacher/pastor/exhalted leader should be the most pious looking person, not the head of his scam organization...
"prosperity" pleaser, the only people that prosper are them and the people who work for them.
"God wants you to be a millionaire", please---I'll wager that if there was a God, that God wouldn't give a damn about how rich you were, as its man who values wealth, God who values Virtue and Character.

As long as the Church is making a difference in the community and not just hoarding money, then I dont have a problem with building nice buildings.
I guess its OK to give money to all the worldly crap like porn and violence.....

waste of a fucking sunday
You can pretty much attend church 7 days a week in person, online, on tv or in the privacy of your home by yourself.....you can pick the time if Sunday is inconvenient. Don't have to dress up, don't have to give money, don't have to sit in a big lavish building, don't have to sit in a small building, don't have to sit in a medium size building, can pick and choose what you'd like to learn about, can pick the music, choose no music....customize it however you please.

I've probably been exposed to the Catholic Church as much as anyone on here. I went to a Catholic grade school, high school, and college. I started questioning it with my parents in about 7th grade. I would always cause problems in high school religion classes with my ultra liberal teachers too. The older I get and the more "aware" of the world I become, the more I see what a fucking scam the whole church is. I would constantly see hypocrisies within their teachings and just complete BS in their church doctrine. It has very little to do with the teachings of Jesus anymore. It is really just one big system to control people. I am agnostic now, I believe in God, but I don't believe Jesus was his son at all lol. His resurrection is believed to be a myth and if it wasn't, I guarantee it could be figured out by modern day science in about 15 minutes.

She's pregnant right? Yes, she probably wants to "show" that she has a supportive man and also when it's time for the Baptism, you're not an unfamiliar figure. How long are the services? An hour is reasonable, thus taking only about 2 hours out of your day (travel, fellowship time, etc.). If you're home by noon, it's not too unreasonable. Beyond that... I can see it being a PITA ;)
It can be a good networking opportunity...

Pure beta.
Look, you don't want to go to church? Don't go. How tough is that? It is obvious you don't believe in God or at the very least organized worship of God, so why bother faking it? You come here and whine like a wimp about a woman "nagging" you so you "...have to go like once in a month or two months".
Actually your worse than beta, ergo I'm downgrading you to omega.

i just watch the trinity broadcast network on tv n they have awesome men n women of god teaching bible scriptures, i have church in the luxory of my own living room :). its all about the message, whether u get it from tv,radio or church it doesnt matter as long as u hear the scriptures n try your best to follow them

I do. Its funny because I don`t talk about my lack of religion unless asked or if it comes up, but the religious have to wear it on their sleeve and ASSUME that everyone else is a believer too. Its bullshit and if they don`t like my answer, then fuck them, thats their fault, they brought it up. I will freely let it flow if asked or if its brought up, why should I support their delusion or even respect it for that matter?

As a believer I'm the same as you. I choose to represent Jesus Christ everyday, but I don't bash others over the head with the bible or force expectations on anyone. Still, I will do my very best to live out my faith without condemnation and "hell, fire and brimstone" towards nonbelievers....how does that win others for Christ? In a moment of conversation or debate certainly I will air my beliefs, but I still do so with respect. In that instance I accept that you would share your position even if it's done so via Dawkin's style.

Gotta get more talking bushes in my life lest I feel empty.
I prefer a singing bush myself! :D

Church is fun, except for all the bullshit the preacher is usually rambling about. If you can ignore that its a good place to meet women and make business connections.
Too bad you gotta hear all that ridiculous superstitious nonsense there though.

EXACTLY!! Church is about closing deals and pickin up fine hoes! I mean c'mon!! You know these weak-minded, uneducated sheep are ripe for the pickin. With enough gumption and silver-tongue'd effort you could clear out dozens of retirement funds. At the same time you know all those fine Christian ladies are hard up for a real man of the world given their effiminate, stick thin, pale faced, pansy Christian husbands aren't gettin the job done!

Well, I should clarify in what I mean by God.. I believe there is a higher power, but I don't believe it judges us or has any real controlling factor over our life or is anything at all like the God portrayed in the bible lol. I still might be called a simpleton, but that's ok. I am not sure what's out there and really no one has been able to figure it out fully... maybe soon. Although that view is slowly shifting for me lol.
I read an article recently(will try and find) there is a direct correlation between people who believe in God/Jesus/Ala. etc.. and IQ levels. The higher the IQ, the lower % of believers lol.
-
Would you consider someone who believes he has alien implants, was abducted by them and can communicate with them through his mind clinically insane?
If so, what is the difference between your religion and this?
For me personally, the difference is found in what was demonstrated in scripture (in terms of salvation in Christ) and how it is repeatable today by those that belief...that real, tangible relationship with God. Salvation through grace by faith in Jesus Christ and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit thereafter is as real today as it was with the original disciples and apostles approximately 2000 years ago.

The preaching of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God!

Honestly, I'm not really pro-organized religion. I'm pro-salvation by grace through faith in Christ and the associated fellowship with other believers. A multi-million dollar building, flashing lights and lasers and production value simply isn't needed. Now, I do enjoy the music in big churches because I worship heavily with music, but I can worship alone in my truck and do so often. The heart of my belief is completely focused on Jesus Christ and a personal relationship therein. Unfortunately there are many broken churches and false teachings from pulpits within Christianity across the globe.

It use to piss me off when I passed by the gay pride marches to observe. I would always leave infuriated with their behaviour, and attire. When I tried it for myself I realised how ignorant I was being at the time, plus I felt a lot more comfortable in the 90 degrees heat with only a rainbow feather on.

Wanna find a excuse not to go ?
Always will get one.

I'm not going to anymore of them to observe. I just wanted to confirm my thoughts on churches, if you want worship whatever you want you can do it from home.

'Church' is the Greek word Ekklesia which actually means 'The gathering of the called out ones' i.e. God's people, so I would have to disagree with the second part of your statement - however you CAN 'do church at home' as long as you invite everyone else!
Church has nothing to do with the order of service, the bricks & ornate windows, even the location - but ALL to do with the people gathered.

Yea they used to have those things in Atlanta Ga when I lived there, not being gay I just stayed in the house waited for it to clear. Everyone has their on choice in the USA some countries dont.

I read an article recently(will try and find) there is a direct correlation between people who believe in God/Jesus/Ala. etc.. and IQ levels. The higher the IQ, the lower % of believers lol.
What you mean to say is that there is an inverse correlation between religiosity and IQ. This fact has been well-documented for at least half a century and has been expanded to include a variety of proxies for intelligence other than IQ. It isn't difficult to ascertain the most plausible explanation for this fact given what most religions demand people believe, but let's not shit on the believers' fun in this thread.

Maybe a valid point however I don't need the gathering of people.

Well, I know it sounds comical, but men who are believers and have families are called to be the spiritual leads of their families.

It does not sound more comical than everything else associated with religion.

What if Jesus offered you peace with God, and a close relationship with your creator, but outside of the 'religious bullcrap' we all hate?

So religion is a pretty enormous bucket. Is it all aspects of all religions in general you find comical? Or is it something more specific about an individual religion (ex: Christianity, Catholicisim, Mormonism, Jehovah's Witnesses, Hinduisim, Islam)? Or is just the general "fairytale of the fly spaghetti monster in the sky" bit applied to all faiths?
Just curious.

Wow, you know what inverse correlation is. He said same shit, he just hasn't used that particular word which makes no difference, yet you just HAD to emphasis the fact that you're so fucking "well educated".
Gosh, you're annoying. Where did you graduate and where do you work? You sound like first year law student who thinks he's the shit because he knows more words than everybody else.
-

Fair enough.
If you don't mind indulging me a bit further I have one more honest question (and anyone can answer this for that matter). Given that I am a believer, what would you recommend to help me eliminate my belief? No traps here....no preaching coming....nothing of the sort....just a question.

Depends on the level of delusion. Intelligent believers will reply that their belief in god is on the same level as my belief that what I see is real world. Also, they generally do not consider god as a part of real world, rather something seperate. I am sure syntaxmachine will find more "suitable" words to describe it, but that's generally the idea, more or less.
I cannot do anything with that simply because it's impossible.

So there is no reasonable suggestion(s) to offer because my belief is based upon some level of delusion or mental illness and you can't truly reason with the delusional, correct? Well, you can counsel and medicate the mentally ill but that's beyond your scope, correct?

Well first of all his name isn't syntaxdouche for nothing, if a thought is expressed incorrectly be sure that syntax will be there to correct you into oblivion. Secondly, his correction is correct because it is indeed an inverse, and not a direct correlation. If I said that you were a christian, then went on to describe how you don't believe in God then there's no harm in correcting the term i used to describe you.

There is no God but Allah and JESUS and Mohammad are his messengers.

If you feel there is a good just like you feel what you see is real world then no, there's no rational arguments I can use. I wouldn't medicate you though or do anything with that because I see no harm. When you start affecting other people with your whatever your "god" told you then I would suggest locking you up in medical facility.

Yes, I'm kind of a big deal.

No, he expressed a completely different thought -- one contrary to the meaning of the one he ought to have expressed. Lest anyone get confused and think there is an actual direct correlation between belief and IQ, I corrected him.

So you respect anyone who has a strong belief in something, no matter how absurd or incorrect or damaging it may be simply because, according to your rationale, the stronger the conviction-the more respect one should get.
I think that is quite silly, don`t you?

Ask yourself why you are an atheist to all other religions other than your own, why don't you believe in Allah, or Odin or any of the other many GODS. Once you answer honestly why you don't believe in the many other Gods, you will have your answer as to how you can move on from the current belief you have around the GOD you do currently believe in. Even religious people are atheists when it comes to religions other than their own. Are you able to give a reasonable explanation why you don't believe in the many other Religions and Gods worshipped throughout time? I am curious as to how believers justify the selection of their current faith and their denial of other religious systems.

The approach you suggest is reasonable. Honestly, my response to your question is the same as the response I gave to another question in this thread:
For me personally, the difference is found in what was demonstrated in scripture (in terms of salvation in Christ) and how it is repeatable today by those that belief...that real, tangible relationship with God. Salvation through grace by faith in Jesus Christ and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit thereafter is as real today as it was with the original disciples and apostles approximately 2000 years ago.
I know that ad hominem replies are often not granted much (or any) consideration, but to elaborate a bit further requires some emotion since a relationship with God isn't clinical or purely textual....it is absolutely personal and comes down to the Holy Spirit and the believer. The very same Holy Spirit that indwelled disciples such as Peter, Thomas and John at Pentecost and later Paul after his Damascus road conversion is the same that indwells me as a believer today. The experience changed me through and through, but I take no credit for myself....all I did was surrender to the Lord's will with humility. After that his reality, his presence was made abundantly evident and does so to this day. Today my desire is that others that don't believe will experience for themselves the very same things and hopefully in even more powerful ways than I ever have.
God bless

Many, many churches have done away with passing offering plates and have opted for discrete dropboxes for giving that has no part of the actual church service. Many modern churches also provide online giving abilities and/or giving by traditional mail. Church services with preachers asking congregations for cash is becoming a thing of the past. The tearful, mascara-running, overly-dramatic "Jim Baker, Jimmy Swaggert" 80s approach of "We need $10,000 of your dollars to fund God's house!!" is a thing of the past in most modern churches. Certainly some churches still pass plates and you can find tv ministries asking for cash 24/7 if you're so inclined, but your typical modern church experience no longer incorporates "plate passing".....that's an outdated approach that is being retired. In essence, if you wanna give then give, if you don't wanna give then don't give, but either way the majority of modern churches aren't gonna ask you for you a dime and no one will know whether or not you've given.
For example, my family has visited about 5 different churches over the last couple years and none of them passed plates or asked for cash. Then I went to visit my grandmother's old, old church and my sister's small country church and both passed plates there.

You have attempted to explain why you believe in your GOD and religion and not why you DON'T believe in other GODS or their RELIGION, which was essentially my question. Also, I had a little trouble following your explanation, are you stating you felt a strong impulse to Surrender completely and just decided to practice blind faith and as a result of that choice more was revealed to you that acknowledged that the choice you made (to surrender) was the right one.
-

Not a problem, I understand what you're asking and don't mind elaborating a bit more.
In a nutshell, my reason for disbelief in the gods of other religions and faiths is that none of them have ever demonstrated their divinity or left any solid reasons with which to fully believe they exist (same reason most nonbelievers give). Certainly one can engage in the act of belief of other gods, but it will only be one-sided participation. We have over a billion Muslims and a over a billion Hindus in this world and none of them have a personal relationship with Allah or Vishnu/Krishna/etc....from my perspective, that's truly blind faith. Only Jesus Christ has lived, died and risen and demonstrated his divinity to others. For me, the key to my belief in Jesus Christ comes down to two things: his resurrection and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in believers. It's the tangible presence of the Holy Spirit that validates scripture. Certainly there are others that have come to belief differently, but this is me we're talking about. Others mock the idea of faith and initially faith is about taking a leap into the unknown, but that absolutely resolves when one truly seeks to know Christ. That initial leap transforms into full assurance in the heart for believers. All that Jesus Christ said about salvation and the Holy Spirit is correct and repeatable today. He opened the gate that leads to him, but we have to be willing to walk through it first in order for a revelation in our lives to occur.
As a child and young adult I was a believer in Christ, but I walked away from my faith....arrogance, thoughtlessness, pride, vanity, etc....were huge factors in that. Later, when at my most hopeless and desperate, when I had exhausted all my own ability to help myself, I surrendered to God Almighty and his presence filled me and the room I was in the most powerful way I've ever known.....it fully changed me. Do I belief I was lead to reestablish my faith? Perhaps, but I can't say for certain. I do know I wasn't living out my faith at all prior to that....I had wholly stepped away from it.....I lived for me and this world. I surrendered to God when I had nothing left and man did he respond! Again, I take no credit for the change, it's all about him. For me, the most powerful proof of God came when I became part of that very proof that I sought. I took a leap of a faith because I desired to know Jesus Christ and when the ruler of this universe reveals himself to you personally you don't anything else....at least I don't. ;)
Hope that is helpful, but also note that my references to Islam or Hinduism is not meant to be disrespectful or combative in any way towards Muslims or Hindus.

You're right, religion can be a good mechanism for coping with guilt and self disgust, but salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ will help you eliminate it altogether if you're humble enough to surrender to his will for your life. The notion of religion has become a cliche....an inside joke if you will. Knowing and trusting and living your life for Jesus Christ can stand outside that cliched notion of religion that so many detest. I can't sufficiently prove that to anyone in this thread, but at the very least I can share it and tell others that he changed me.....never been happier!!

Some believe it's purely a nonliteral narrative teaching a deeper moral message and others believe it's a true event. My honest answer is I believe the story, but I also don't know exactly how it all played out. There simply isn't enough information for me to give a definitive answer to every question or objection. Theists and atheists have picked apart the flood narrative from side to side and top to bottom. Biblical apologists have proposed reasonable suggestions for virtually everything, but in the end every question simply can't be answered fully and completely for all audiences.

The notion of religion has become a cliche....an inside joke if you will.
what a crock of shit... literally every protestant-derived sect or "non-denominational" will claim something like this these days, claiming their "personal relationship with christ" is something far more profound than the tired practices of catholicism, or whatever other guise they want to drape of catholicism. nothing more than a practice in renaming. to paraphrase schopenhauer, you can call your religion whatever you want, its alias will soon be found out.
-

I can understand how you can conclude that, but it's simply not the case. I won't speak for Catholics either because I'm a Christian....Catholicism and Christianity are two different "religions". Certainly they have similarities, but their tenets and culture are quite different. Regardless, a personal relationship with Jesus Christ is not simply a dismissive renaming of organized religion in attempt to avoid some sort of persecution or debate. As a believer in Christ I'm guaranteed to be persecuted or ridiculed regardless, but I accept that.....I don't prefer it, but I accept it. Wrapping a dismissive, clever turn of phrase around "a personal relationship with Jesus Christ" negates nothing I've said about it. Protestant, Eastern Orthodox, non-denominational, Christian, Trinitarian, what have you.....my "religion" is Jesus Christ - plain and simple. I belong to a church, I attend church, I associate with other believers, but my faith in Christ isn't defined by that association. I live out my faith in accordance with Christ's will for my life. I don't dislike the notion of church or organized religion, but I don't wholly prescribe to it either. In the end, if I'm left with only one option for "religion" in my life I choose Christ and Christ alone.
-
I often wonder what they fed the carnivores on Noah's Ark, and after the completion of the Journey when they once again settled on land.
This is a great example of what I stated above. Me personally, I just don't have enough information to answer this question fully. Certainly I can make a reasonable apologetic plea (and others have), but I don't believe that's particularly helpful.
-
Going to church can be very inspirational, but I have to admit, there are times when the sermon just doesn't seem to apply to me. I wouldn't stop going though man.
It keeps you in touch with the true reality of things. Live to Live. Living to die is not a good choice.
Hope it all works out ~ have an open mind. If the music is good, try to enjoy that. The contemporary Christian rock bands now are pretty cool to listen to.

Unfortunately this is true. I think many well-intentioned folks get clicky at church and often forget the message of Christ. No sharing of the gospel with others, no stepping outside the "churchy" box, going through the motions, quick to condemn others, etc....it's pride and vanity.

most of them do not display any "christian virtues" at all, in fact, more like the opposite

most of them do not display any "christian virtues" at all, in fact, more like the opposite
Well, I'm not saying I'm any better than anyone else, but I do belief I'm better off than some "Christians" because I know without a doubt that I am saved.
From a perspective of Christianity (and I genuinely dislike saying this) I believe there will be many self-professed Christians in the churches of past and present and future that will find themselves forever separated from God when they exit this life. I'm not saying a believer in Christ is without sin....we've all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. I believe that many Christians are nominal Christians at best and have not truly accepted Christ as they certainly don't live out their faith if they have.
It's a matter of spiritual maturity and this is something that I'm striving to improve in my own life. My faith in Christ must be lived out according to the will of the one I call Lord and Savior. I speak on these boards now so that others that don't know Jesus Christ can at least have some type of exposure to him and understand that all of us are sinners and all need to reconciled with him by accepting his sacrifice for us on Calvary's cross.
Each relationship with Jesus Christ is personal, but attaintable for all.....easily!! That's what the gospel means....it's the "good news" of Jesus Christ! Understand that you are a sinner, but confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that Christ is the risen Savior and you will be saved by grace through faith and indwelled by the Holy Spirit and made anew. Cliche and laughable to some, but hope and promise for others that don't know his gospel. Not all will come to Christ....most will turn from him.
My continued prayers for all on this board (as it's part of my small circle of influence in this vast world) is that they can somehow come to know the love of Jesus Christ like I have. Forgot the objections to "churchiness" and the misguided actions of others. In the end the judgement of God will only entail a review and accounting of our individual actions. Call on the name of Jesus and believe in him and experience the reality of his existence and presence in your own life.....that's all I want for others.
God bless!

I often wonder what they fed the carnivores on Noah's Ark, and after the completion of the Journey when they once again settled on land.
There were propably 2/3 of planet population to feed'em with. (at least )
All sorts of different "pagan" religions belive differently and were unaffected.

I've got a little altar here with a copy of Strunk and White (2nd ed.) at its centre, surrounded by scented candles. I will soon steeple my hands, enter a meditative state, and pray to the Lord that you cease dropping walls of text atop our heads and learn to organize thoughts into paragraphs content-wise and/or logic-wise. You've got to understand: these walls are no better than the charred walls of the damned for someone like me.
Since all things are possible through Him, I expect the change to be effected immediately. Thanks in advance!
There you go syntaxmachine....easier to read paragraphs. I Hope that helps!

i would become a devoted christian if it would help me get rich
but apparently it doesnt help christians to become rich
so whats the point basically
i mean it would be easy for an all powerful god to make someone rich
he did it for a lot of guys in the bible
but seems like he doesnt do it for current christians
so maybe he retired

Just go and look at women's butts...that will get you thru service---if you don't like the sermon.

First I LOL'd after reading this, but I'm afraid that you're dead serious here.
Try to be more thankful for what you have, not what you don't have.
In many cases, the happiest people are the ones who live a simple life.

My friend once took a dump on the side of a church.
is he going to hell for that?

Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.”

So is " walk it off " a religious figure of speech then?
If God, or J., or whosoever from that family of three, is all that he is supposed to be.
I would gather that it is of no matter wether you choose to go to church on sundays or not.
How you handle yourself thru life, is.

Again I'm not going to church ever again. Fuck it.

LOL! Don't know.
The church isn't a building or structure, the church is the body of believers in Christ. As believers saved by grace through faith we are meant to live out our faith according to his will for our lives. We are representatives of Christ and as such should attempt to model our purposes after his so that others that do not know him or do not believe will see Christ through his church.

During the crusades era christians killed and raped women and children.
Why?
Because they believed that if they wanted to do such horrible things, then that must be the will of god.
a) If someone would go around scandinavia pushing his religious wievs, that would have the exact opposite reaction.
b) God told me that I can believe in anyway I like if I choose to do so - want to argue with that?

Bunch of nominal Christians that did nothing to represent Jesus Christ. A highly tragic and disgusting time in history.
