Title: Andre The Giant - in his prime, could someone defeat him in an MMA fight?
Post by: Darren Avey on April 06, 2013, 10:58:39 AM
If so how? How you gonna take a man that big and strong to the ground to use your ground game? You gonna stand toe to toe with him? One of those sledgehammer hands smashing into your head and its all over, YOU RE all over. And i think a punch onto that melon head would have next to no effect. So how would you beat him "IN DA CAGE?"

I'd point out and make fun of him for not having a bald head, multiple ugly tats and the fact that no Tap Out shirt can fit someone his size.  Hopefully he would just leave the cage in shame and give me the forfeit victory.

you aim at the weak link, his legs.  pound the knee area with kicks and make him move around. The shear size of him makes him very dangerous if he pins you on the cage, his weight would crush you.
Hits to the nose/jaw/eyes work, nobody likes to be hit in the face.  Just don't hit him in the skull.
Big boys fall easy, the shorter guys very tough...

This is the right idea. There have been lots of physical giants in the combat sports, very few have done well just relying on size and strength alone. Andre also wasn't the most athletic of wrestlers either.

If it's just Andre the Giant with no training and he just walks into the cage, a skilled heavyweight could beat him. If he trained for it and had some skills against takedowns and could strike a little, it would be a lot harder.

This is true. Still, in above pics, Andre is fucking Huge!
Can somebody make a picture comparison on Andre and, lets say, Bob Sapp.

What about that boxer, Valujev(?), he is quite huge as well?

Valuev was a decent boxer, but he fought a lot of tomato cans and older boxers to pad his record. When he was against good boxers in their prime, he was taken the distance and beaten. Also, he had to retire due to health problems, his hip and knee joints were going south on him.

THE MAN

He proved that size didn't matter back in the first ufc tournaments....there were no weight classes at all. No gloves either and the stoppage of fights were not immediate like they are now...brutal back then. Obviously now that the ufc evolved into "mixed martial arts" size does matter.

I've watched some a Pride fight I think it was,   where a much bigger opponent, a huge dude was beaten by a much smaller guy who if I recall, circled the giant, avoiding being in a grapple, and eventually was able to take him down and make him tap out with a joint lock. Likely would be the case with Andre

Not sure if this is relevent to your point but the big show when asked who would win in a fight out of all the wrestler he said it was a toss up between Kurt Ankle and the Undertaker and he admitted they can both beat him and he is as big as Andre, triple h also said on off the record that the undertaker and Angle were the toughest.

Size don't matter, apparently being able to read any sports stat don't matter either.

In virtually every real sport aside from bodybuilding size matters.

The only semi exception is soccer, and that's only because the bulk of the talent comes from countries where the people are very short.

If you understand the bell curve, it's easy to see if your above 6 4, and have good genetics, you'll succeed in any sport. Of course your talking about a relatively small segment of the population, but they exist.

Like someone mentioned earlier, use speed to get to the legs
to get them to the ground. If someone has a steel jaw and can take a hell of a punch
then you go for the temple. Tyson knocked out a few guys or more with temple shots.
Then there's always choking them out although with Andre you would most likely
need long arms.
Here's the closest scenario to this thread and it took a very skilled 230 pds. pudgy
Fedor 2 minutes to win.
Fedor is really a lightheavyweight that dominated the heavys
for a long time. By that I mean his structure and muscle mass is that of a 205 lightheavy
and the extra weight was not quality weight but he was so skilled for his time he constantly
beat bigger opponents. MMA has evolved though and in this day and age in the UFC he
would probably fight as a lightheavy if he was just starting his career now.

That being said royce is a very good fighter but in his prime wouldnt be very competitive in his own weight class now.

agreed on hand picked but no way wrestlers have a chance against gracie

he proved himself against fighters who knew nothing about submission

if royce really wanted to test himself he would of fought high level judokas

in reality gracie is a pioneer for introducing USA to UFC but he was not a champion of all styles

as he made himself about to be

Andre was massive, I think he would be a challenge for any man, Martial artist or otherwise.  he was strong and had fingers as big as bananas.  A bitch slap from Andre would be enough for some nighty night.  There is a story about Andre, One night at a bar, four men decided to harass the giant, and Andre got up off of his stool to confront them. The men ran outside into a car and Andre followed, and then tipped the car over on its roof!  Andre was a strong dude.

At his crazy weight he would just have to bear hug someone. How many could take that massive weight on them? Eventually if he fell on top it would be hell trying to get him off. He could make most tap out by just lying on top of them for a minute.

The first ufc tournaments were to see which martial art out there was superior. No one knew how to defend against submissions or had take down defence. And this scrawny looking geek in a gui was taking guys down twice his size and submitting them time after time.

One fight...can't remember who it was against but the guy was twice the size of royce and his tactic for this match was just giving thigh kicks while keeping the guy away. Just walk around the pentagon...and give thigh kicks. Kinda boring but after so many of those thigh kicks the guy came tumbling down to the mat and thats when gracie pounced and submitted the guy.

This is why now we have mixed martial arts. Some guys may rely more on strikes but you still have to know how to avoid take downs and submissions.

Andre was in fact a giant but big guys tire out...plenty of guys out there now that would make him scream like a little bitch. Look at that rich piana guy in peru...lol.

although technique is vital to have in BJJ/MMA, imo brute strength n size helps out bigtime, providing the strong dude has some athletic ability n doesnt gas out in 30 seconds. i remember rolling with this guy named emmanuall yarborrough at cranford judo club, he was about 620 lbs back in 98 n it was pretty much impossible to tap him out, going for heel hooks was the only chance anyone had. u old school ufc guys prolly remember him, he got dropped by keith hackney with a open palm strike to head n was so big he couldnt get back to his feet once he was down n hackney was pounding on him from the back

I hope that "giant" retired and got a hair cut.  He looked like he was clumsy enough to KO himself on the way to the ring.

giant silve lived about 5 houses down from me in jersey, i rolled with him at renzos newark academy. he kicked my ass pretty bad ;D really nice guy though
