DOG-lovers at a market in Argentina paid out hundreds of pounds for fashionable "toy-poodles", only to discover that they were fluffed-up ferrets on steroids.
One pensioner was duped into buying two of the "pedigree" pets, but then became suspicious he had bought what Argentines call "Brazilian rats".
When he took the animals to a vet for their vaccinations he was told he had bought two ferrets that had been given steroids at birth to increase their size and then had some extra grooming to make their coats resemble a fluffy toy poodle.
Local television news in the capital, Buenos Aires, discovered that the unidentified man was not alone. Another woman had been told that she was buying a chiuhuahua, but ended up with a ferret.
Ferrets typically have brown, white or mixed fur and are around 51cm in length and weigh around three pounds. Toy poodles are around 25cm tall and weigh around four kilograms.
Toy poodle puppies typically cost upwards of $700, while a ferret will usually set someone back around $70. The "toy" poodle is the smallest of the three varieties of the dog - the others being "standard" and "miniature".

Maybe they were older people who couldn't see too well? I agree it looks nothing like a poodle.

Wet dog smells way diff than "Aroma du Ferret"...plus, how could not not tell the difference between the Ferret's elongated body, short legs and very long tail, and triangle shaped (and pointy snout) head?

'Pet poodle' turns out to be giant rodent pumped with steroids

A retired man has fallen victim to a pet poodle hoax after his local veterinarian uncovered he had been sold two giant rodents pumped up with steroids.
Bargain hunters rummaging around Argentina’s largest flea market, La Salada, have been duped into spending hundreds of dollars on what they have been told is the dog of their dreams.
In reality, they’ve just been sold what locals call the ‘Brazilian rat’ – a ferret pumped up on steroids and groomed to resemble a fluffy toy poodle.
The retired man was initially fooled by the $75 price tag for a pet that usually costs closer to $1000.
Soon after his purchase the Argentinian man became suspicious and decided to take his new ‘pet poodles’ to a vet for vaccinations.
The local vet confirmed his suspicions that he had paid $150 for two steroid-pumped ferrets.
Long thought to be an urban legend of South America’s biggest illegal market, local news outlets discovered that another woman ended up with a ferret after being told she was buying a Chiuhuahua.
Neither the woman or the retired man have filed an official complaint.

why are they illegal ?
Why are ferrets illegal in California?
Answer:
Ferrets are illegal in California because the California Department of Fish and Game claims that if ferrets are let out into the wild, they would mate, multiply, become feral and could threaten native wildlife. Which is total nonsense, Ferrets have been domesticated for so long, they no longer possess any natural instinct to survive in the wild, and at the most would probably last about three days. Ferrets sold at pet stores have been neutered, therefore unable to breed. California governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger still refuses to legalize ferrets as pets.
The California Department of Fish and Game also reference the problems in New Zealand where ferrets are feral, predate on native wildlife and are considered pests. These are not true domesticated ferrets. When ferrets where first brought to New Zealand they were bred with the European Polecat ferret and that enabled them to survive in the wild.
