Great money, but I'm sure his insurance is through the roof. A lot of liability involved there.
-
He risks a lot every day every time you put some one under they can die
-
Seemed like I saw a news report a few years ago about a growing number of them hooked on their own stuff. Shorting patients so they can get high. Wonder if they got a handle on that these days,,,

Yes and No.
If they work for a boutique hospital that provides many out-of-pocket and private insurance patients, while allowing for very long work hours, then yes. Likewise, if they work out of a plastic surgeon's office and work long days, then yes again. These particular groups can make upwards of 500K-1 Million/year. That said, it is a very small group of Anesthesiologists that fall into this category. I'd give a rough guess and say less than 10% in the nation.
If they work for an academic institution (which constitutes the vast majority, probably about 90% of hospitals throughout the USA), then no. This group, which constitutes roughly around 90% of US Anesthesiologists make around 250K-400K tops.
How do I know this? I used to work as an auditor for most of the major top, private hospitals in New York State. By way of that occupation (which I held for over 5 years), I was able to see all the salaries of most medical specialists and also the nationwide trends.

P.S. While some might say that even if the vast majority of Anesthesiologists make around 250-400K and that's technically great money, you have to consider the effect of that salary after taxes due to their falling within the upper tax bracket.
If you made $300,000 last year as an Anesthesiologist in NYC, then your take home after taxes was probably along the lines of $180,000.

He deserves that money.
You are correct in that each and every time they put someone under anesthesia, they risk the patient's life in the process. It is their job to keep the patient sleeping, numb at the site of surgery (via an anesthetic) and relatively pain free (via an analgesic). The combination of all these drugs can cause serious deleterious effects especially on the patient's respiratory rate, as well as their heart's rate and rhythm.
Finding the delicate balance, while doing a large volume of procedures can alter the Anesthesiologist's ability to provide safe and effective anesthesia. So, ultimately, they deserve every penny they make.

Many anesthesiologists were med school students with who discovered that they didn't really like dealing with patients. Perfect choice for them, minimal interaction necessary compared to any other medical profession.
I've heard them describe their job as being like a lifeguard. 95% of the time you are sitting on the tower watching everyone swim. The other 5% you have to jump in the water and save someone.

I bet he makes more than 50 K a month. My wife use to do the books/billing for a general surgeon who was a hack and he use to say pay me 9K a week and give the rest to my wife who also worked in the office.

The anesthesiologist that did my wife's epideral actually made a point of saying "I've never given the drugs to myself". I thought it was weird he said that.

correction--do not mean to be nit picky-- but this profession requires one to complete medical school... acquiring their M.D. or D.O. and one of the most difficult specialties to get into .. much respect
