SKY FALL! Man tumbles off Empire State Building
New York Daily News ^ | THURSDAY, APRIL 25, 2013 | JOSEPH STEPANSKY , JOE KEMP , BRYAN CALCANO AND DANIEL BEEKMAN

After 'leaping' one story security talks man out of jumping a second time to avoid death plunge.
Two tourists were taking in the sights Wednesday night, when right before their eyes a man hovered between life and death on the 85th floor of the Empire State Building Argentinians Luis Ariel Jofre and Julieta Paola Barambones said they saw the man, who had apparently already fallen one floor off an observation deck, swing his legs into the air as if he meant to drop again.
Man is rushed from Empire State Building after tumbling one story, breaking his ankle and cutting his hand.
“He was in his own world, like he was lost,” a shocked Jofre, 29, said of the 11:45 p.m. incident. “He was calm looking down, like it was nothing, but it was 80 stories high.”
Authorities say the man will be facing a trespassing charge. Security guards talked the man off the ledge, said Jofre, who added, “We’re relieved that he didn’t die.”
Luis Ariel Jofre (left) and Julieta Paola Barambones of Argentina talk to the Daily News about witnessing a man on a ledge of the Empire State Building.
FDNY officials said the man — wearing a white shirt and black pants — was transported to Bellevue Hospital as an emotionally disturbed person.
A cop at the scene said the man suffered a broken ankle and cuts to his hands and faces a trespassing charge.
The officer also said it had not been determined whether the man’s fall from the 86th floor was intentional.

As someone with a morbid fear of high places, I can say a definitive 'No'.
No - I would not walk on either of those walkways. Not a chance. Nuh uh. I would be sitting against the closest wall, rocking.

>:( Here ya go from Trip Advisor:
I went to this place on Friday the 13th of July of all days. My family and me drove the whole trip of 100 plus miles 21 of them on an unpaved, rocky, hilly dirt road. I wish I had consulted trip advisor first. The Indians are accustomed to the American way of offering to rip you off. Because after seeing this thing in Popular Science I was intrigued enough to want to see it; since it was such a short trip from Vegas.
Because I would be there in July anyway. As everyone else states they force you to get out of your car and offer to drive 21 dirt miles you take the last mile for only 49.95 per person on their tour bus; there were 5 of us which would make it 250 just for the bus. Then it would be an additional 125 dollars for us to go out on the skywalk, oh yeah no cameras or camcorders allowed on the skywalk. Me and my wife are thirfty people so after rip off offer was presented to us I looked at my wife and she looked at me and even after the grueling discouraging 21 mile dirt road we refused and got back in the rental car and left refusing to be had.
Stay away from this place all the bad reviews are right on, I wish I could've seen the canyon from the skywalk but from what I read the south rim is the best and cheaper only 12 dollars total for everyone in your car .

Another of the 100's. ;D
I was told when I called the skywalk that the price was $25.00 and I did not need reservations. Directions were given and no mention of the 14.5 miles of unpaved road. I kept saying "thank God this is a rental car". Many cars broken down on side of the road with flat tires. Could not see 2 inches in front of me because I was following a tour bus. It was like driving in a sand storm. Finally arrived and waited in long line to buy tickets. Told the tickets were $243.00 for three. No discounts given. I asked about the $25.00 quoted on the phone and I was told this was for the skywalk.
I said I only wanted to see the skywalk and walk out on the walk and I was told I needed to buy a package which included a buffett. I said I did not want to eat or tour the indian village and was told that if I did not buy the package i could not go on the skywalk. No cameras or any personal items were allowed with you and if I was told that from the beginning I would have left them in the car. I had to rent a locker and pay more money. The buffet was brutal and there wer no cold drinks. The water machine was boken and there was no shelter from the sun while waiting for the bus to take you back to the ticket booth. They were pumping raw sewage right by where we were walking.
No facts save for the Eagle pointed out by tour guides who seemed like they despised their jobs. All around bad experience including the $$22.00 price if you wanted your picture on the skywalk. The indian village consisted of two tipi's with no sighting of indians and you had to stay on the concrete path at the village.

I took a helicopter over the Grand Canyon as a kid. Sat in the front with the pilot. Older helicopter with glass style cockpit (think you call it that) that encircled it from head to toe....that was awesome as a 10 yr old!!!
Today I'd soil myself my from anus to ankle if I did that.
-
It is actually a 22 mile drive ;D :D

Prime spot for a terrorist attack. Resident jihadists ought to be taking notes.
-
Funny you say that (Jihad) they were on terror watch here and at the Hoover Dam. It was crazy. Imagine if some one blew up the Hoover Dam? Los Angeles would be so fucked.

In many ways the size is a pure advantage with these tall buildings like in case of a earth quake or wind where the mass has a stabilizing effect. They are big projects but they sure are no displays of ingenuity.

I remember reading that BASF Chemical created a new concrete additive just for this project (the burj). They needed a high early strength concrete which would allow slab pours to proceed at a floor per week but which wouldn't sacrifice later development of full compressive strength.
They basically solved the whole drawback of HE concrete.
