Title: Pain and Gain - Movie Reviews
Post by: cephissus on April 27, 2013, 01:57:42 AM
just got back from the night's last showing of pain and gain, barely made it (had to go straight from the gym, of course).  WOW!  INCREDIBLE MOVIE!

thread title says it all... from pumping iron to pain and gain, how far we've come!  in 1977 pumping iron was all about arnold's singular charisma (with lou providing the only counterpoint to keep things somewhat grounded in reality) and extolled his bullshit philosophy of bodybuilding (his delusional "artistic sculpting of the body") while making bodybuilding out to be some sort of goal in and of itself (complete with professional bodybuilding contests ::) i.e. the most wayward homosexual pageantry yet devised).

in 2013, pain and gain finally brings truth to the masses... or, i should say, reflects the truth OF the masses, because they already know it, instinctively.  there's a single line in this movie which, with startling clarity, sums up bodybuilding completely:

"I finally felt like others saw me the way I saw myself"

THAT is what bodybuilding is really about!!!  and this movie demonstrates it beautifully.  there's about 30 seconds of footage featuring a "bodybuilding competition" in the whole movie, and it's relegated to the background of the shot.  instead, a story about some average joes who were sick and tired of their lot in life, sick of being on the bottom, and decided to do something about it in the most ridiculously inept way possible takes center stage.  marky mark and his pals feel like they deserve better than the life they've been dealt, and, being instead of dealing with the fact that they're simply wrong, get desperate as they try bring their lifestyle up to the standard of their physiques.

and besides all that philosophical BS, it's a great movie anyway.  getbiggers of all stripes will find something to like when it comes to girls (they've got the spectrum covered between rebel wilson (wiggs, bmc, etc.) and bar paly (the rest of us)), fake plates (90% of the scenes), real plates (rock toys with 225 on incline nicely), schmoes(!!), protein shakes, injectables, rec drugs, guns, getbig-level abodes, etc. etc. etc.

by far the best movie of the year imo, and one you should someday show your son who, having just picked up his first issue of MD, is begging you to foot the gym signup fee.

Apparently, it’s pretty good. However, as Ceph points out, it exposes the general public to the vacuous frippery and endemic dullardry of bodybuilders/ing.
Here’s a snippet from an early review:

http://movies.nytimes.com/2013/04/26/movies/michael-bays-pain-gain-with-mark-wahlberg.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0
"It all leaves you pondering whether you have just seen a monumentally stupid movie or a brilliant movie about the nature and consequences of stupidity."

What’s that, again, about enjoying the felt quality of entering a room and being the center of attention?

I'll go see it for entertainment value. Just concerned the feeble minded will think it's factually accurate and sympathize with these brutal criminals. In truth they repeatedly tortured the guy and in the end tried to kill him in a brutal fashion.

so the movie is about 2 wanna be bodybuilders morons who live in Florida and participate in various criminal activities to scrape a living in pursuit of success in this "sport"

Is it the life story of PJ Braun and Aron Singerman ?

Saw Pain & Gain tonight -

I wouldn't suggest forgetting Pumping Iron (although the poster is in this movie!), but everyone, regardless if you're a builder, fan, schmoe, whatever, you should go see Pain & Gain.  There are so few movies that have any connection whatsoever to bodybuilding, it's fun to see one that does.  And Pain & Gain is entertaining enough on its own that you won't be bored or fall asleep.  See it!!!

Hollywood scores another all time low....
Seriously why would anyone in their right mind sign up for this? I guess most actors will go down or take it in the ...for money and fame, so I suppose they could care less about the misfortunes of others.
From the trailers it looked awesome, but after reading this there is just no way I could give these clowns my money.

That's not even close to what the story was.

yeah it was about 3 guys one of whom looked awesome one who looked bloofy and one who looked natty despite having ED from AAS kidnapping a rich jew and torturing him for his money and assets. succeeding in said plot. then some other shit hapened i can't remember i was really fuckign baked.

long story short. it wasnt that good. and the story had nothing to do with bodybuilding other than every once in a while one of the characters would do a random set, pin some gear, or say something that most people would stereotype a bber to say.

you must be kidding, "nothing to do with bodybuilding"?  what do you think bodybuilding is, donning a thong and stepping on stage?  ::)

it's about wanting to make yourself into something more than you are, which is EXACTLY what the movie was about -- no retarded pretense of "aesthetics pleasures" or "thrilling competitions" to be seen.  relegating the "random sets" and "gear pinning" to the background is the only way a real movie about bodybuilding can be made...  the delusion has to come crashing down at some point, and the only way to show this is to keep the camera rolling outside of the gym.

lol i train cus i wanna look great. not cus i wanna make something out of myself based on how i look. im not dumb enough to believe thats realistically possible :P

this movie just makes the stigma around AAS using gym rats even worse. its pathetic. the only reason you identified with it is cus the characters work out just like you do. lots of movies out there about elevating yourself bro

and why do you want to look great?  and why does a trained physique look great?  because it looks capable -- powerful.  but bodybuilders aren't capable of much, which is why they rely so heavily on illusion (or delusion, rather).

nothing pathetic about that.  contrarily, very honorable work.

no, i "identified with it" because it further drags the "bodybuilding ideal" through the mud.

really? i would have preferred it to make the bodybuilders look capable and intelligent. you realise this only hurts bodybuilding yes?

i woulnt call my self a bodybuilder personally, but im after the full package. im not compensating for anything. i want to be intelligent and capable, and look the part too. plus theres nothing better than getting a huge pump and walking around the gym looking awesome! satisfy those lower needs, and the higher ones too such as success in life.

really dude the movie just makes bodybuilders look bad. the event itself wasn't even an interesting crime to be frank, and the way it was portrayed was not that interesting. it was trying to be dark, serious, and humorous at the same time but failed in all of these aspects. it was confusing as to what kind of movie it was supposed to be..

bay finally makes an evenhanded film, devoid of moral force-feeding -- which is exactly what everyone claims to crave -- and suddenly everyone feels compelled to INSERT themselves and bitch that "it wasn't dark enough!", "this wasn't a clear cut satire!", "the focus is muddled!"  the same thing happened to natural born killers, and fight club, and now pain and gain.

Really? Cuz that's what's keeping me from seeing it. Bay films people taking a shit and it's in slo-mo with their hair blowing in the wind....I hate his films.

i don't particularly think bay is a bad director (mediocre in many respects? i guess, i'm not really a film critic), and found the transformers movies at least watchable, if not thrilling.  pain and gain is significantly better, imo.  bodybuilding aside, a lot of the pseudo-intellectual bay hating film critics flung shit at this one unnecessarily -- it's a competently made movie, and yeah there are minor complaints, but here's the main criticisms i gleaned from skimming several reviews:

1.  Bay glorifies the criminal bodybuilders and vilifies the victim.  Bullshit.  Utter bullshit.  Not that I give a single shit about petty moralizing complaints like this, but this criticism isn't even remotely defensible.
2.  Bay dumbed down / in some way adulterated the "true story".  I couldn't care less.  Until someone gets off their ass and actually films a "truer" version of the story, and it turns out to be better than Pain and Gain, I don't see how this is relevant in the slightest.  It's not like the legions of people making this critique were in some substantial way involved in the "actual events" anyway. ::)
3.  Bay makes light of such "serious" subject matter.  Again, WHO GIVES A SHIT?  When did everyone turn into such a complete fucking pussy?  Bay gets panned again and again for being the posterboy for over-produced, "hollywood safe" big-budget schlock, tries something different, and now the morality brigade is on his ass?  Oh brother! ::)

Notice these complaints are made on moral grounds, and have pretty much nothing in common with the usual storytelling or otherwise "film making"-related criticisms that have been leveled at Bay for the transformers movies?  It's because Pain and Gain is pretty well-made and entertaining, and they can't find anything substantial to bitch about!

I'd love for BB not to look bad or unintelligent. But when BB.com, Flexonline, and npcnews show that they don't know the meaning of a simple word like 'anniversary,' I wouldn't keep my hopes up too high.

Just watched.....

1- The Steroids make you impotent? Ok that's the stereotype of  bodybuilders ....

2 - But then when the guy is able to be fully erected the chubby chicks says " Its less than what I'm used to ...but what a heck"!

3- At the end...During  trial the wife says that he was a bodybuilder to compensate his small penis" ...

So according to this movie, not only bodybuilders are dumb selfish and all they think is about their "pectoral muscles" but they also have a small dick that won't go hard because of steroids......

I think they should of focused more on the characters rather than all this bodybuilding myths .....
