Shawn was lucky he did as well as he did but in his defense he only competed once a year and only beat guys who were off and competed multiple times a year , he did try once compete in another show and got his ass handed to him there too , 5th place.

He competed at 205lbs in contest shape and when he won the Nationals in 1987 he was 196lbs so put on a whopping 9lbs as a pro ::)
Another myth is the other guys only won because they were mass monsters , Shawn was a mass monster on a smaller scale he was just pissed because he was 5'7" in heels , he competed at 205lbs and was much heavier than guys around his size like Labrada who competed at 190lbs and Samir who competed who won his Olympia at 188lbs , then Porter Cottrell who was 195lbs at around the same height , Shawn was a mass monster he just didn't have the height to go along with it.

those two, he's better than chick and flex wheeler. i can partially agree he has had his problems with the others. then again, most athletes bottom out in the business sector, but he was good for his day at promoting himself.

In all of Mit's Battle for the Olympia tapes Shawn was in the best shape -and for his weigh he was strong, trained smart, don't think he ever had a major injury, maybe some scratches here-there....kinda cocky in person at times, heard from others, but when I spoke to him was always very cordial!

This. Whether you love him or hate him Shawn Ray is one of the top 5 bodybuilders ever. In fact if you look at all the bodybuilders that don't have Olympia titles, I'm going to say that Shawn Ray is number one. One of the greatest physiques of all time.

He certainly knows how to promote himself.
I do appreciate what he did for bodybuilding for speaking out, when he did but I certainly would never want to break bread with the man.

I'm not taking sides, just pointing out the obvious. Shawn was one of my favorites growing up until I got to be around bodybuilding. Then that all changed. I'd like to think he's changed with age. He's certainly chilled out alot. I don't know nor do I care at this point. But I'll admit, he did bodybuilding the way it should be done.

Lee Labrada loses Olympia shakes the winners hand and smiles , never utters a word about how he was fucked over or how everything should fall on his lap , Labrada is a true class act and a true sportsmen , a real classy guy with a much better physique than Shawn

He may have been a bigmouth, annoying or whatever but Shawn Ray never destroyed his physique the way most others did. He retained his lines, his aesthetics and he never lowered his presentation standards.
As a physique athlete, that speaks volumes.

If you work on your physique by not destroying it, by not getting too large for your frame, by working towards classic lines, aesthetics and presentation, then yes, you are a physique 'athlete'.
Zane, Makkawy, Dickerson, Labrada, Ray... some quality physique athletes right there.

Shawn Ray is one of my favourite bodybuilders of all time, and I'm a Yates fan. I met him at the 08 Olympia Expo and he was friendly and polite and I got a picture taken with him even though he had to rush off and be somewhere else. I can only give an opinion of him based on my own personal experience so I've got nothing bad to say about him so can't comment on the whole Aceto thing.
Awesome physique and consistent for so many years. Just a shame he was 5'7" and Yates completely out-massed him and had him on conditioning most of the time as well. Those are the breaks unfortunately.

I agree,labrada was great,ray had some of the best full looking bellies muscle wise,front most muscular hands clasped might be best of that era,side chest,his legs were stubby and actually at 87 nationals were too big for upper body,but he was polished and great poser too.he could have gotten 10 or more peo wins if he did all the grand prix shows,ironman,arnold every yr like his contemporaries,and sean would never admit labrada was better or equal but then again no pro admits it if someone looks same or better.

I don't think Labrada had that luxury and I think he did the right thing by retiring when he did. His physique was at the limit of how much size he could aesthetically manage (I think he looked better up to 1992).

Just my take on it but I thought Flex Wheeler looked crap in that contest. It was the first time I recognised that 'modern' look - low fat, no detail but hard looking.
Personally, I think that look sucks.
