Since rap GOAT gets a shit ton of views, let's ask a more relevant question, who's the greatest death metal band? For pure influenence and impact I'd say "Deicide" even though they fell off their recent releases...
Opinions?!?
-
Obituary, Death or Deicide. All solid choices.
-
Morbid Angel (aside from Illud Divinum Insanus), Cannibal Corpse, Deicide and Death are obvious choices. But for me, overall I'd say Nile.
BB related:
Jon Vesano (ex Nile)

Suffocation, Nile, or Morbid Angel.

Opeth - Blackwater Park Album, pure gold
-
Never really got into DM per se, but I've must've given Symbolic by Death a 1000 combined spins since I first discovered it a decade back. Death really are pretty much the only "technical" Death Metal band (as opposed to Melodic Death and similar bastardisations) I've enjoyed.
-
-
anybody remember this band?
-
barnes era cannibal corpse
morbid angel...more than just blast beats....best DM guitarist ever...so many bans have ripped their style
-
My choice:
- Black Sabbath
- Motorhead
- Metallica
- Lamb of God
- Machine Head
- Opeth
- Disturb
- Hell Yeah
- Pantera
- Dio

Motorhead is where it's at. 8)

Schuldiner (RIP) got me into Death and then Death Metal and I still love every album so I'd have to go with Death.
Pull the Plow?! Hahaha....wtf?
I know these guys are technically Black Metal, but they still rule.

influential I'd say Death and Morbid Angel, but my personal favourites are Nile, although I once emailed their original drummer off Catacombs and he attributed a lot of their sound and influence to Morbid Angel, who's drummer he basically worships.
Plus GOAT would have to be a Florida band not a South Carolina band I guess?
P.s. I met Karl Sanders he was really cool!
-
American: Morbid Angel
European: At the Gates
-
Since Death got mentioned...
In September 1999 I sent £50 (all the money in the world to me then) to Chuck Schuldiner for his operation. Poor bastard died a few months later.
-
Morbid Angel have had more influence on other death metal bands than anyone, so that classifies them as GOAT.
Death were too progressive for anyone to follow their style.
Nile have been the best for a decade now, but they got most of their shit from Morbid Angel and built on it.
Deicide are a very hit and miss band imo, their first couple of records set them apart but they have some really shitty records too.
-
You have to be mentally disturbed to listen to that crap.
-
Tool.
Yes, you are one.
Death, FTW. R.I.P., Chuck.
-
everyone always mentions the tampa bands like morbid angel and deicide, but it's like incantation and immolation get forgotten constantly. WTF dudes.
the names that really battle for GOAT in death metal are suffocation, incantation, and morbid angel. cannibal corpse probably wins for pure consistency, but CC doesn't have any albums like effigy of the forgotten, onward to golgotha, or blessed are the sick.
if you wanna talk some heavyweights of the modern era, there's always portal, ulcerate, antediluvian, disma, behemoth, a bunch of others.
also don't forget some older forgotten gems like demilich or disembowelment.

There's something about the chorus on Pull The Plug that does it for me.... it has to be played very loud!!! That's my all time favorite song from Death

Awesome post!!! I have seen live Immolation, Incantation and Demilich (not many can say they saw Demilich, it was at Maryland Deathfest, amazing set).

Cannibal Corpse has two classics IMO, "Tomb of the Mutilated" and "The Bleeding" both essential releases. CC without Barnes is a waste of time.
Deicide killed everyone back in the day with their debut and then what may be death metals defining release "Legion" ;D
Death peaked with first album, "Scream Bloody Gore" and just got too technical and added too many solos at expense of brutality :-( Chuck should have kept that shit in his side band, kids at shows only went to hear "Zombie Ritual" and "Mutilation," 2 of the most brutal songs ever recorded.
2 other bands with AMAZING debuts that went on to become a mess of prog/tech nu-metal were Cryptopsy, and Aborted. Find their early stuff, it is crazy how they became kind of bands featured at Hot Topic and emo kids shows :-(
-
Behemoth by far
-
Nice music for 14 year old rebels.
If I had to pick one - Death by a land slide.
Morbid Angel had great arrangements was precise and edgy.
Deicide for the nutters - put out some great songs and looked mega impressive in person.
Too many to mention that were more than ok... Suffocation and a few names I've forgotten.
-
Dying fetus..
after 20 years there still one of the secret bands people borrow from imo

Where's the death metal??? And if you are listing an assortment of metals where is Ministry? >:(
-
I don't know a lot of death metal even though I do like a lot of metal.
I do like Cannibal Corpse though.

Ministry is the dogs bollocks.

I'm a fan of metal and hard rock, that's all I listen to in the gym, but once it gets to this stage it isn't music anymore as far as I'm concerned. All the vocals sound exactly the fucking same no matter what band you listen to.
-
Best or most influential?
And if it's best, well, that's subjective, and everyone will have a different answer.
Most influential? I'd suggest Morbid Angel, Death (in a few sub-style ways), Suffocation, and perhaps Entombed's debut.
As far as my favourites, I'd list all the classic names, and then include Decapitated, Broken Hope, Corpus Mortale (the newest effort is unreal), At the Gates, Vader ... and on and on and on ...
-

i'm hittin up MDF this year. SO fucking stoked for it.
also, give cryptopsy's latest a shot. honestly aside from the clean production it could sit right in between none so vile and whisper supremacy.
-
anybody remember this band?
Yep, I own that CD.
-
I've really tried to get into Morbid Angel and Nile, but they do nothing for me.

I can respect the musicianship, some of these dudes can play their asses off...but even that gets monotonous and boring.
The vocals .....I can't see how anyone can say they are "good" in any context.. And the subject matter is comical
And like you, I can listen to Sabbath, Deftones, Tool, Soundgarden all day long.
Just look at the names of the bands...."dying fetus"..hahahaaa...give me a fucking break.

Talk about monotonous and boring. Deftones. Ugh.
It's like this. I won't buy a rap album, but there are certainly "good" and "bad" rappers for people who enjoy rap.
Just as there are good and bad death metal bands for people who like that kind of music. Pretty simple.
-

To each their own, i get it dude. It's just that i consider myself a pretty diverse guy musically, and give things a chance.....this stuff......i just don't see it at all. Maybe if I was a pissed off 15 year old struggling with puberty, but as an adult...it's just funny to me.
-
on the flip side, i listen to "hard rock" and laugh my ass off that anyone could consider that "heavy" or "aggressive". after you've been listening to enough from the extreme side of things, people saying how badass killswitch engage or 5 finger death punch is just turns hilarious.
death metal is just aural equivalent of a horror movie. if you like watching Evil Dead i can't see why you don't get the appeal of cattle decapitation or murder construct. i'm not saying you gotta like it, but assuming it's all for pre-pubescent teenagers is like me hearing you listen to deftones and tool and assuming you're a 13 year old who cries about losing a girlfriend while writing on his blog.
signed, a 28 year old guy with a white collar job.

I don't judge music by how aggressive it is. I judge it by quality, and if i like it more than anything. There are country music songs i will listen to. I have no single barometer.
A more apt analogy would be comparing death metal to some straight to video D horror movie that is unintentionally funny.
and LOL @ the tool remark. Maynard puts more creativity, insight and irony into one song than every death metal song ever recorded. they sell millions of records across a more diverse demographic, and they aren't a pop band where it's all about moving product.
Be honest, the first few listens of a new release, you have to read the lyrics because you can't understand a word the dude is
farting into the microphone singing
Point is it's an extreme niche genre, I bet if I went to a death metal festival, it would be a bunch of angry young white males...and fortress...ha ha. Most people, even rock dudes...think it's noise. and as usual, I wouldn't be surprised if some of he members of "dying fetus" were married, had kids of their own, mortgages, car payments....and are laughing all the way to the bank. As they rail about Satan and Armageddon.
This is all just my opnion, whatever floats your boat....i just have to comment because of every genre of music, I find it the corniest. I feel the same way about hardcore gangsta rap.
-
see you're making ignorant assumptions about creativity and songwriting craft. death metal's dense and difficult to get into, but don't take that to mean it doesn't take a shitload of skill and musicianship. maynard and the boys would get buried trying to keep up with a nile or morbid angel song.
here's the funny part. i know music. i've studied it, play several instruments, took courses on theory and whatnot. so to sit there and go "well this takes no talent" cracks me up because of how hilariously incorrect that is. you don't have to like it, i'm not trying to make you like it, but i have to pop in and point out that you are 100% incorrect in terms of skill and talent necessary.
also as for your dumbass point about the guys from dying fetus having kids... uh... no fucking shit. it's a music act. corpsegrinder is a World of Warcraft nerd and loves fishing for shit's sake. i listen to putridity and murder construct on my way to work or while i'm at the gym. it's ENTERTAINMENT, numbnuts.
sure, there ARE dudes who are for real (mostly in the norwegian black metal scene or guys like glen benton), but we're fans of music. i'm hitting up a death metal festival in two weeks and guess what? we're all trying to get time off work and make arrangements for kids or pets. it's entertainment. i don't know WHY you seem to think everyone takes it like life lessons or autobiographies.

They a good, if U can attend Soundwave 2014 (probably +100 bands).

I never said it takes no talent, not a single time. I said the lyrics are fucking comical, and they are. As far as the members of tool not being able to play death metal.....HAHAHAHAHAAAAA AA. You know this how, exactly ? Was there a contest?
They are all professinal usicians and I'm sure each could play the others with very little difficulty. Just because they dont do it..doesnt mean they can't do it.
I'm reminded of a quote by Chris Cornell...he said "when I was 17,18...it was all about jimi hendrix, van halen and playing really complex music and guitar solos....then when I got older, I started becoming interested in what The Edge was doing"..I'm paraphrasing.
And no, i don't expect people to live their music, but Demons, suicide, dead roaming the earth....sorry, can't relate, don't want to.
Thom Yorke writes a song about the temptarion of adultery, and unrequites desire...I can relate. Its normal human stuff, not made-up morbid nonsense that no one had ever experienced. I think LOTR is silly shit too.
You said it all when you said that dude is a WOW nerd. Now i get it. Nerd on Garth.

Not all death metal lyrics are "comical". Many bands sing about guts and gore (there's even sub-genres for that) but other bands' lyrics like Nile and Morbid Angel are more complicated than that.

Tool is popular because it's simple and accessible to the masses. Simple melodies. Death Metal, for the most part is highly technical and takes more attention and thought to appreciate. The same can be said of pop as opposed to jazz.
-
There are exceptions to every rule. The genre as a whole puts me off it, so I'm not well versed in the good vs the bad.
Oh and PS good to have you back Zach. It's nice to be able to have a heated discission with someone that stays on topic and doesn't devolve into facebook threats.

Yeah, but music that is complex for the sake of being complex is no more worthy or "better" it's what they choose to do.
It's like the guitar nerds who argue online that Steve Vai "cant" play Jazz. I'm sure he can do whatever the fuck he wants with a guitar, there is nothing he can't learn and play...it's what he chooses to play. And i would say the same thing about any proficient musician.
Tool breaks out the occasional speed metal riff, and odd time signature. Nothing stopping them from doing a whole record of it but them.
-

Music tastes are purely subjective. It's really a pointless debate. Personally, I find simple songs fairly boring and would rather listen to the complex melodies and arrangements found in prog, death, jazz and classical. I find the music more emotional and exciting. Again, it's subjective.

well that's just it, man. it hits different parts of the brain. death metal goes after that primal part of the brain and frankly that's what i love about it. i throw that shit on and it stops the bats from flapping around in my skull, just lets me headbang and go bananas. hell i love even the ULTRA retarded metal (i'm not lying there's a band called "vulvectomy" with an album called "post abortion slut fuck" and i LOVE THAT SHIT).
to me, limiting your music to "down to earth" subject matter is dull. you're surrounded by that all the time. let me listen to outrageous things, listen to music that's got all the amps up to 11. when i go to a concert i want to come up with a bloody nose and a shitload of bruises, i don't want to sit down and listen to a guy whining about unrequited love or how his parents divorced.
now don't get me wrong. i loves me some of the softer music. i won't even bullshit you, i have a load of broadway soundtracks on my spotify list (1996 london Jesus Christ Superstar, bitches). i'm just saying metal is far from rebellious tween music.
like YR said, tool sells a lot of records because they're dark without being TOO dark or difficult to get into. extreme metal takes a certain kind of ear to enjoy, like jazz fusion or old baroque music. it's not for everyone. just don't be a dick and start making all these sweeping generalizations about it and who likes it.
-
Of all time....I'd vote Cannibal Corpse. Anyone mention Immortal?? although not really "death" per se.
-
i missed seeing immortal last year. :( they only come to the states like once in a blue never, so that's an opportunity lost.
the MDF lineup this year is facking crazy. death bands, black metal, grind, crust, doom, the works.
-
Immortal would be black metal, though after At The Heart of Winter (a true masterpiece) they incorporated some thrash/death elements.
Seen them live thrice.
-
no one seems to have mentioned Carcass - very influential - both for melodic death metal and gore related DM bands
-
Seen Carcass live, House of Blues in L.A. Most influential band in grindcore IMO. Their first couple releases were non stop brutality and killer. "Heartwork" and after were pretty shitty :-[
-
more than napalm death? i dunno about that.

They are prog rock. I'd lke them more if they didn't go off on weird atmospheric tangents for 5 minutes in the middle of a kick ass tune. I fast forward through that crap.

Straight up heavy metal.

Pantera is the metal band that absolutely owned the 90's. Love em!

Straight up heavy metal.
So would I, everything in music has to be pigeon holed, labeled! RIP Dimebag!
-
What would you call Pantera? Not that it matters just curious!
Pantera was labelled Power Groove when Cowboys From Hell released. Not sure what its called now.
-
Others mentioned Maryland Deathfest, it's in 2 weeks and I'll buy any getbiggers a beer :-)
Some classic over looked death/grind classics:
CENOTAPH: "Puked Genital Purulency" (anyone know more brutal album?!?)
DISGORGE (Mex): "Chronic Corpa Infest" (a milestone)
MESRINE: "Goin to the Morgue" (insane, sickest record u ever heard)
CHRIST DENIED: "Drink the Blood"
DERANGED: "High on Blood" (speed/death masterpiece)
SKINLESS: "Progression Toward Evil" (fuck their later shit, this rules)
BLOOD RITUAL: "At the Mountains of Madness" (heavy Satanic metal)
-
Pantera was labelled Power Groove when Cowboys From Hell released. Not sure what its called now.
Hell Yeah reminds me a lot of Pantera ;)

The Golden God award or fake Weider's Sandow trophy ?, which 1 would you choose :o :o :o

Hell Yeah reminds me a lot of Pantera ;)
Thats because Vinnie Paul Dimebags brother is the drummer! I'm Sure he influenced the sound!
