Nothing horrible, but reports are that he got busted for mushrooms. There were speculations that it was harder drugs, but that was later disproven by a police officer that pulled the report on another board.

I love mushrooms and garlic too on my pizza. Sadly all the good things are becoming illegal.

Records [edit]

Ed Coan has set over 70 world records in powerlifting.[2] He became the lightest person to cross the 2,400 lb. barrier in the powerlifting total (a sum of three lifts: the deadlift, bench, and squat). He set an all-time powerlifting record total at 2,463 pounds, even though at the time he was not in the heaviest weight class.
Coan's best result in an international, and drug tested, competition is 1,035 kg (2,282 lbs) in the 100 kg weight class at the 1994 IPF Senior World Championships.[3] This at the time was a world record.
Coan's best single ply lifts:
Squat - 1019 lbs (~462 kg)
Bench press - 584 lbs (~265 kg)
Deadlift - 901 lbs (~409 kg) [4]
      Total: 2504 lbs (1135.79 kg)
Other lifts [edit]
His best competition lifts as a 220 lb lifter:
Squat - 961 lbs Bench - 584 lbs Deadlift - 901 lbs
The squat and Deadlift attempts were as follows: 959 lbs and 898 lbs. After the competition, the plates and barbell were weighed And the weight came out to be 961 and 901 lbs
Note that Ed Coan's lifts were completed under IPF Rules. Single layered suits and standard 2 meter knee wraps.
Drug ban [edit]

Coan has failed drug testing through the IPF three times. The first time he was temporarily suspended in 1985 for the use of Deca-Durabolin, an anabolic steroid.[5]
In 1989, he was once again suspended due to a positive drug test.[6]
In 1996, at the IPF Men's Open World Championships in Salzburg, Austria, he tested positive once again and was issued a lifetime ban from the IPF.[7] Because this positive drug test occurred in a competition in which he placed first, his name and results have been retroactively removed from the 1996 results.

Let's go now getbig. I know you cats know I was kidding around with my decent lifter, decent total.  Coan stands with a very rarefied, very elite group of powerlifters.  Coan, Bridges, Pacifico, Lamar Grant, perhaps Kaz, Cole, Passanela and a few others.  Coan's pound-for-pound numbers are unmatched. 1st ballot unanimous Hall of Fame for sure.

Strong mofo but I was never fan of his training style ( at least later on in his career). Too low frequency. Obviously worked for him tho.

Ed's a friend and a swell fella.

There is no arguing the fact that he's one of powerlifting's all-time greatest. Some of his accomplishments defy belief.

Just a super hard working guy who happens to also possess awesome strength genetics.

Just heard the Fortess interview with Ed from Iron Radio yesterday (good job Iron Radio team), glad to hear he is doing well, training fairly heavy (for him) and looking to make improvements.
