Title: Wife just had babies! But is lifting over???
Post by: theworm on June 15, 2013, 07:20:44 AM
How do new parents do it?  Babies are up every 2 hours, getting no sleep.  Can barely even get to work in the morning, just so out of it.  Then while home they require 24 hour care and monitoring.  I lost 10 pounds in the last week and there is no way I can go to the gym.  Even if I could, I have no energy, and then without sleep it would all be worthless anyway!

Any advice?

Make lots of money, and hire a full-time nanny to take care of your soon to be burden on society degenerate offspring.

HTH.

Focus on getting your child settled, forget the gym, just do the best you can, support your woman, remind yourself you won't be right for a while and be gentle on yourself.   You aren't going to die if you have to take some time off from the gym.  Just listen to your body. Your child and your woman should be the focus for the time being.  JMO

I had a baby in April, and between the addition we put on our house, and the baby, I haven't set foot in the gym other than a few times since January.  I just started back last week.  It's rough, especially if he is colicky.  Congrats on the little one man.

If you can find the space for it, maybe get cheap squat rack/bar or a heavy set dumbbells/kettlebells, and just knock out a few sets here and there when you've got time. It doesn't take much to maintain fitness once you have it, just a few sets a day. Some of those kettlebell complex type workouts are very good if you're short of time.

Lift at home in the meantime buy a pull up bar and some dumbbells and do what you can.

Yes, try bench pressing your new born, or bicep curls holding his leg.

Or you can join a cross-fit camp, and do the following...lol

It can be done. My wife is a fitness instructor and was teaching 4 days before my son was born. So she was as bad as me chomping to get back. You have to trade a lot and make do with less sleep. They do, eventually, sleep much better.

+1 on getting some kind of home gym if you can.

If you are lucky they will be sleeping all night in a few weeks.
And as a parent you soon adjust to the lack of sleep

As other people stated, just pick up some dumbbells, a pull up bar, ez curl bar an straight bar, and a bench. That will sustain you for a few months.

And congrats on the new born.

Your best bet is to keep fit by staying active.  Get a harness where you can your kid like a backpack. Also get a trailer for your bicycle. Then hike n bike with the kid. You will stay in shape, spend time with your kids and keep the old lady from nagging you to  death.

Invest in a pull up bar too.  For the most part going to the gym will become less important and more difficult tomake time for.

I dont understand this topic.  Child rearing is for women...making money is for men.  When my child is up at night I expect the mother to handle it.  She doesn't work so her full time job is baby+house.  My full time job is keeping the lights on and food on the table.  If I'm not resting then I'm not performing my job as needed and that creates risk for the family.  Mommy can sleep when baby sleeps.

Yeah, this is not 1950. Women are starting to have better jobs and making more than men. And as time elapses, this will occur at a greater amount.

QFT

I have 4 kids. Made a home gym. Worked many a 12 hour shift. Always worked out. A home gym really helps. No driving 30 minutes to the gym each way. Also try a Yates type split and one work set per exercise so most of your work outs are 45 minutes.

Any advice?

Simple. PRIORITIZE!!!!

1) Wake up earlier to go to the gym; go later when the babies are asleep; or invest in a home gym.
2) COOK enough food to make your breakfast meals and lunch meals for AT LEAST THREE DAYS.
3) Your shaker bottle should have purple heart medals. When you can't eat your meals, DRINK THEM, especially at work.

I've been married almost 11 years with two kids born during that time. It ain't that hard. Remember Bill Pearl won multiple Mr. Universe titles, with a wife and family. And, Lee Haney won 8 Sandows under those same circumstances.

But, more women are dropping OUT of the workforce to stay home and raise babies (which has many feminists going nuts  ;D ).

My wife went nearly a decade without working full-time, once we got married.

Next time have TWINS!

Place their cribs close to one another and for some unknown reason they will 'communicate' with each other until they fall asleep on their own around 7:30 each evening.

And at around 6:30 AM each morning you'll hear them communicating with each other through their own language which they apparently understand.

Sometimes they even resent the interruption when you go in to get them up.

First of all congratulations. My advice, for what it is worth.

Just go easy while you all settle in and learn how to deal with sleep depravation. We have had 4 kids, none of them have been sleepers. Even in the early stages they didn't even have daytime naps.

Now the youngest is 3 and we get a couple of nights a week where they all sleep through.

As for training, just remember anything is better than nothing, so even if you do a couple of whole body workouts a week or when ever you can, it will still be good for you.

My first couple of years as a dad, I lost about 30lbs and never thought it would come back. Time will sort it out, so for now, help your wife, love your kid(s) and do what you can.

I always say, "worry about what you can do, not what you can't do"

Our eldest is 11 now and I back training Ok and my wife is back competing as a figure pro, better than before. It can be done.

Best job in the world is being a dad, so enjoy it brother!

Kids are no reason to miss the gym, you might have to switch gyms to find a place that offers childcare like a ymca or commercial type place but it is no excuse! My kids are 2 years apart and their asses got lugged to the gym with me everyday. Nothing like packing a gym bag and a diaper bag to head off to train. If you really want to train you will find the time if not you will find an excuse! My kids are 16 and 14 now so but from new borns to 10 yrs old they hit the gym with me every time I went.

I had two kids at once 4 months ago. Faced the same desperation.

Forget your gym for a couple of weeks, it doesn't matter anyway. Water weight will go down but if you have a foundation you shouldn't become a twink overnight.

I was out for about 1.5 weeks. Then I could get in some short sessions here and there again.

If you are lucky you will be able to start working out properly again when they are a couple of months.

Sleep I cannot help you with. Try to sleep whenever they sleep..
