Does it really suck? Do you absolutely hate it?
Day in and day out, whats it like?

First time I've heard that one - well played :D
-
Had a friend who commuted from San Francisco to Los Angeles 3 - 4 times each week. About a 70 min flight each way. And then a 40 min. drive home.
-
I used to commute 90 minutes (1 way) 3 times per week for my externship. Totally sucked. Do not do it!!
-
externship?
-
Yes and it sucks, but I get paid a lot to put up with it.
Hour in traffic each way plus twenty dollars a day parking, thankfully I'm moving soon.
-
My commute some days is 40 - 50 minutes. It's boring, but a good selection of audiobooks or podcasts help the time pass.
-
I did it for 2 years (years ago) 55 miles each way. If I did it in traffic, it would take twice the time.
I used to go in from 6 AM to 2:30, no traffic. Made it do-able.
-
Wife does it.
Think of it this way - and hour each way translates into roughly an additional 40 hour week extra EACH MONTH spent in the car. Getting half that time back would be big.
If you're single and riding a train, the down time might be cool. Married with kids makes it a challenge.
-
1:15 each way for 4 years. It does suck, but you do get used to it.
-

WAAAHHH! I have to work for my money. WAAAHHH! Life is too hard!

It sucks unless you got a tv in your car.

You just started a thread admitting your inability to get rich. Pot calling kettle.

It's not worth it. Your health will suffer. Law of averages will mean you will deal with accidents and then that 1 hour can turn into 2 to 3 easily at least once a month.
I used to drive 45 minutes and it was taxing on my health and my wallet with gas. I did "read" a lot of books on tape though.
-
I'll work in the city if you need work in the city done and there's no early start access, but you're going to pay me my full rate to sit in traffic. Helps me not mind sitting in traffic so much.
-
There are several guys were I work that commute 100+ miles each way. Mine is less than 7 miles.
-
I used to but got a promotion and they put me up an office 1.2 miles from my house. I appreciate it every single day I drive it.
-
i commute 270km round trip. i love every minute of the drive. its non city so its non taxing. its what you make of it. if you have a short attention span or are ADD you'll prolly hate it. if your chill and cerebral you'll be fine.
-
I haven't applied yet, right now debating if its even worth it because of the 50 mile drive each way.
The job itself would be surreal, like truly one of those dream jobs if i do end up landing it (at least in my line of work)
The drive is almost all on an empty highway with pretty (maybe boring) scenery,
I just can't wrap my head around wasting two hours each day just on the road.
-
Wouldn't do it, can't put a price on freedom/time/sanity.
-
How about flaying 8-12 hours to do the job ;) ;) ;)
-
BIG ACH's nose gets anywhere he's going an hour before him ;D
-
If the traffic is moving, it flies by.
If you're sitting still for long periods, it sucks.
(I haven't forgotten about you Ach)

if you provided a higher standard of living your wife wouldn't have to do this
bitch
-
Use to wake up at 3:30AM for a 105 mile trip to work. Hated it. I use to have to get out and walk around because of the pain of sitting on my ass for so long. I also use to work all kinds of shift work and holidays too.Nothing like working Christmas and New Years eve. Nothing like working four ten hour nights having a day off then work 4 6AM days. All worth it. Retired in my 50's.

If it's your dream job, then why not move closer to it? What's keeping you where you are now?

x2.
If i know i'll be working at a certain job for more than a year, i'd definitely move closer.
Unless you are tied down via home-ownership and/or spouses job.
But if it's a legit "dream job" with adequate salary, than selling and buying a new home is almost a mandatory logical step to take.

You just started a thread admitting your inability to get rich. Pot calling kettle.
I began- not "started", but began- a thread detailing the average Getbigger's misguided notion that getting laid was an achievment. I then pointed out the masses of third world scum living in America's inner cities who look like garbage yet get laid and breed like moquitos on a hot August night. I went on to say that wealth building is the real challenge. I mentioned that rare is the man who creates true wealth. The type of wealth that makes every breath he takes in this world an absolute pleasure. Perhaps I was too humble, because I ommited the crowning jewel of this theory: I myself have conquered all financial barriers and I have become such a man. Life answers to me. Not the other way around.

Me and about 2 million other people did it for 20 years, but that's life if you live on long island, staten island, Jersey... and work in Manhattan. 90 minutes each way, minimum....and it was only 25 actual miles. The price you pay to live in the suburbs and have a home with a big yard, etc.
Still do it now, but not half as bad. The commute into Phoenix is under an hour....i can do that standing on my head after commuting into NYC.

I think the commute time depends on mode transportation. I took a train from London to Bracknel every morning, about an hour each way for 6 months. It was no big deal, I read the paper, chatted with people, the hour was easy. But if I had to drive it, then I wouldn't enjoy it. I had a 45 minute commute and it drove me nuts, especially when there are accidents and it takes you 2 hours.
-
not if the job is paying you very well and you're happy with the place...the commute feels so short... :)...I know a dude here at my job who is an IT director and he's freaking commuting from Delaware to Maryland everyday and he's been doing it for 5yrs now......I'm sure he can't get the same job in Delaware paying him 167k/year.....hahahahahha......

Day in and day out, whats it like?
About half of my co-workers commute that far or more each day, there and back, to our job. Audio books. Get some. Getting the pay we get, with the benefits, makes it absolutely worth it.
-
I'm lucky enough to have a small condo about 5 miles from my office and a house out in the country about 90 minutes away. I stay at the condo during the week and my house on the weekends. Houston traffic is insane, it takes about 1 hour to go 20-30 miles most of the day.
There are people that i work with who drive well over 1 hour every day, but most of them come in at 6am and leave around 4pm so they beat the madness.

Fucking BLOOOOOOOOOWS! worst part of living in Los Angeles
i just listen to those knuckle heads john and ken on the way home,
-
easy solution for an hour commute. Hire a hooker to go with you, have her blow you during the drive, then for the remaining 59 minutes you can converse with her.

Doesn't make you any less fat, or hide the fact you've had to post under multiple accounts on a message board, chubso.
-
what about the cost in gas, that shit will hit your pockets like a ton of sand

Yeah - I figured you guys have a lot going on these days. Appreciate the help buddy, Just keeping my eyes open for everything around me.
If it's your dream job, then why not move closer to it? What's keeping you where you are now?
Its a two year contract with potential of either continuing at that same location, being relocated to another branch, or just being let go when the contract is up. I'm not against moving , but with this I Just feel so weary about moving for something that seems so open ended.
I'm lucky in that I have a job now, plus still working on my PhD, so I'm in no hurry to jump ship, but if the right thing comes along I might just make the switch.
Think I might just apply, to see what happens. Figure it out then, assuming I even get it.
-
I commute 45 minutes each way every day. It doesn't bother me at all, in fact I think it helps me prep for the work day and unwind before going home.
-

That's why you don't buy a gas guzzling SUV for a daily driver and go for something with taste and class...like a Versa!
Seriously, most boring appliance on wheels I have ever driven but I can't argue the numbers in savings I get with the bland thing.
Also, the drive back from work lets a pre-workout do it's thing and kick in by the time you get to the gym. You can make advantages to it. Don't waste the time.

I forgot to add - the majority of the drive is on a Toll road, with about 3-4 tolls each way, I have the E-pass so I don't slow down... but shit its still money lol
Whatever..... I applied, it'd be a good opportunity.... doubt i'll get it it, its pretty competitive.... but would be one hell of a position!

Tolls are bullshit. You get already get taxed on income and on purchases. Tell 'em you'll take the job but you're not paying any damn tolls to get there. They'll respect you as a man of principle for it.

Awesome strategy... I should also throw the E-pass transmitter at one of their foreheads to really make a statement Lol

Terrified eggheads!
On second thought I'd go for the "We're all victims of this toll conspiracy, my brothers!" approach. And give 'em some HELL NO WE WONT TOLL buttons. You'll have 'em eating out of your hand.

What a fool! he could have rented a room in LA for $500 a month.

I did that a couple of years ago, spent $350 a month on gas and my car was in the shop bi-monthly. Never again!
