I have an 18X36 retangular inground pool and have had it for 18 seasons. We use the shit out of it. There was never a year where it sat. I did get a in-ground hot tub put in at the same time but I filled it in within 7 years. I huge waste of money.
One thing to remember if you ever consider putting a pool in, spend the money up front to make it fun and not work. I had a automatic cleaning system that was about $2000 extra and an automatic cover with a key switch next to the back door that was $7000 extra. But I never have to sweep the pool and the cover keeps all the shit from blowing in the pool and it saves chemicals. When I had it built the guy asked if I wanted it to be fun or work. Yea, $9K is a shit load of money but I have saved that on chemicals and I rarely have to do anything to the pool. If we get a storm and crap gets on the cover I get out my gas blower and in 2-3 minutes it is clear.

Never get tired of the pool. Nothing like floating or doing laps. Standing in the low end with a beer is a favorite. Once you get your cleaning routine down it isn't that much work. I keep it crystal clear. I also keep the chlorine levels low so it doesn't burn your eyes or fade clothing. I have been in peoples pools that are a chemical mess. It smells of chlorine, your shorts and hair turn a shade lighter.

Yea, that would be a waste. We usually start swimming here in the US Midwest in May with the heater going until early June then the heater gets used in September for a few weeks then I close it either late October or early November. Best to keep it open and circulating as long as possible.

I've got a 27,000 gal inground I had built in 2008. It's 100 degrees here today so it worked out great. Central Texas almost requires a pool. I have a salt water pool so maintenance is adding some muriatic acid once or twice a week. My polaris does the cleaning

I installed a salt chlorinator about 6 years ago and had a lot of water issues with it. After reading up on it further they tend to work better in warmer climates like Florida and where you are. After using it for 2 seasons I sold it used on eBay for $240 more than I paid new for it. Back to chlorine tablets now with no more issues.

Anyone think that Zack is the biggest douche out there with no chance to make any kind of impact in the pro ranks?  He has the most idiotic columns in Flex magazine.  I predict that he will not get a renewal on his Weider contract when it comes to an end.  How could he...he hasn't competed in any pro events and isn't likely too so after his training injuries.

Too keep this pool related:

If you decide to make sure and put out the money for an automatic cover. Especially if you have any trees. They are probably $8,000 now but you will rarely have any crap fly in your pool. And it saves the chemicals. I fucking love my pool. The other nice thing is all family get togethers are at our house so everyone can swim. I don't have to worry about going to someone elses house and sit around all day not doing shit for fun.

Then you have to go to the store and get your own chems, risk staining up the carpet in the back seat or trunk if they spill and you are not in a truck.  Storing the chems... actually having to analyze the water and adjust the chem to balance the Ph....

Naw man, I ain't doing that.  I pay $20 a week for a guy to come twice a week, he brings his own chems - I have to buy nothing - he conditions the water, balances it, skims off the top, scrubs down the sides and runs the vac over the bottom.  $20 covers all that twice a week.

Thanks for the recommendation.  My wife is pushing for a pool and I'd like one as well but there are issues with our yard that may impede the purchase of a pool at the moment.  There is a steep decline from the back deck into the back yard.

that's not bad. I buy two gallons of acid that comes in a box from lowes for 11.99 and it lasts me about 2 months. That's it for chemicals. I don't have any trees around the pool so emptying the silt bag on the polaris and the two skimmers once a week takes all of 10 minutes. I just verify my chlorine level is cool and ph level once a week and I'm done. But if I had a lot of trees and didn't have a SWG pool then yeah, I'd be there with you

What's all the acid for? Maintaining PH?

I have a hot tub and all I have to do is keep the bromine floater full and for some reason it takes a lot of sodium carbonate or whatever that stuff is because my PH is always going down on its own (and I don't piss in it, lol)

I also use that foam away stuff once in a while.

I had the exact same issue. I had to have 5 tri-axles of dirt brought in to build up the yard. If that is not an option then you can have a retaining wall put in about 5 foot from the pool.

This is very helpful.  I appreciate your comments. I've been trying to explain to the wife it's not as easy as calling someone to install a pool.  She wants the pool to be flush with our deck and for that to happen we are going to have to do either of the things you suggested.

Yes, the acid reduced the PH which rises slowly due to the Salt water generator. Considering I never have to add chlorine or use the pucks, which raise the CYA levels it is pretty low maintenance. I've had a Salt pool and a regular pool and I would not go back to the regular again.

I went chlorine for my hot tub. I use the Nature 2 cartridge in the filter area and just shock the tub with a capful of spa shock after each use, or if not in use a capful per week and it's good to go. No other chemicals needed since I change the water every 4 months and the ph levels stay in the normal range. I do add a bottle of Metal B Gon upon each refill.
