Title: Roger Gracie
Post by: arce1988 on June 25, 2013, 01:33:17 PM
Question:
You’re fighting on the same card as Anderson Silva versus Chris Weidman. Give us your thoughts on that fight.

Roger Gracie:
I think [Weidman] is very, very dangerous. His grappling is at a very high level. He can submit ANY world-class grappler. I think he’s really that good. He can tap ANY one, even me.

It’s just a matter of if he can put Anderson in those situations. I would still put my money on Anderson but I think Chris Weidman is very dangerous and can surprise him.

Before this gets moved    (put it here first because no one seems to read the other boards)

OMR, GBJJ, etc, do you believe Roger?

All BS to sell the fight.

Weidman only has 9 fights and is an unknown to casual fans.

I believe firmly that Anderson Silva will win. I've seen Weidman train at Renzo's Academy before and feel that while he is a solid young man, his game is still not where it should be to defeat someone like Anderson Silva.

Anderson has faced many great JiuJitsu black belts in his day (Maia coming to mind) and he knows how to defeat them EVEN with their deadly ground game.

Chris Weidman is a brown belt under Matt Serra (had to call a buddy to confirm that) and that is still a far cry from being a a Gracie Black belt. While his style is very good, he is not yet at that fluidity stage of JiuJitsu where he can deliver submissions at ease.

I come from the Gracie camp and can tell you that Anderson is not only highly respected by everyone at the Gracie academies, but also considered the best fighter by most Brazilians, if not all.

Anderson's stand-up game is much too strong for Weidman. I also think that if it goes to the ground, Anderson can easily counter what Chris has to bring to the game.

Don't for one minute fall asleep on Anderson's abilities. Anderson is a BLACK BELT in JiuJitsu. He has simply found that his striking gets the job done much quicker than his ground game and doesn't feel the need to be married to the ground only. He is a complete fighter and a damn nightmare for anyone that has to face him.

I believe Dana White and the UFC has done everything in their power to sell tickets for this fight. They have practically made Weidman look invincible for the newbie fans.

I am not buying into the UFC propaganda or the usual 5-second Joe Rogan commentary where he says Weidman is the perfect nightmare for Anderson. Joe Rogan will worship Anderson on his podcast, going as far as calling him the best fighter on the planet and saying that his game is unlike any other man he has ever seen fight, yet he magically will get recorded saying that Weidman is a nightmare matchup for Anderson in order to promote this fight!?! Give me a break man.

The last thing you want is for an angry Anderson Silva (The type that went into the 2nd Sonnen fight) to go into the Weidman fight. The guy can end any fight whenever he wants and has way too many tools to pull from.

Do I believe any fighter can be beaten? Yes. I think any man can get knocked out if he leaves his guard down.

Do I believe Anderson will get defeated at some point? Yes, but not by Weidman. I think Anderson is going to face Jon Jones sometime before the new year down in a Texas Stadium and that is were you will finally see the defeat of Silva, followed by his retirement.

weidman will try and mimick what sonnen did in his first fight against anderson

i think he will find that he will wake up after getting smashed in the first round wondering wtf happened

the only chance he has is if anderson isnt motivated or is injured like he was in the first sonnen fight

Arce, I believe Roger is doing what anyone in the under card for a big event would do, he is hyping the fight up, because that in turn helps people tune in to watch him too.

Whether or not Weidman is tapping out JiuJitsu greats is uncertain. I train at Renzo's and he trains out in Long Island with Serra. He does come very often to our academy to train, but I can't speak of his training out in Long Island. Serra has many friends and besides GSP, might have brought a few other "big names" like Mir to help train the kid.

If it were a ADCC submission grappling fight, I would say Weidman has a decent-good chance of winning, but this is MMA. Anderson is the complete fighter and Chris is the one coming in with a strong JiuJitsu-only handicap.

I agree with you.

I also believe that the only man that is capable of defeating him in a very convincing fashion is Jon Jones.

While I am a big fan of Silva, I know everyone has limits and Jon Jones is probably the one guy that even Silva feels will give him too much to work with.

I don't think it's a coincidence that very few of the very top of top, best of best, Jiu-Jitsu players didn't exceed in MMA. Guys like Marcelo, Nino, Xande, Arona, Gonzaga,
Bibiano, Magalhaes, Roger Gracie, Palheres.... the list goes on. I'm not saying they were losers but they were never going to be champions.

Sure Penn won the Mundials but he got out of competitive Jiu-Jitsu pretty quick and immersed himself in MMA. And he was a street fighter since grade school and knew how to thorw hands before he ever stepped on the mat. And of course there's still Maia, Werdum and Jacare. But I doubt someone coming from a pure Jiu-Jitsu background and was immersed enough in it to win the Mundials will be an MMA champion. And I don't think Nogeria was top,top tier in Jiu-Jitsu tournaments.

I'm a fan of both boxing and MMA. The striking in general is really weak in MMA. When someone like Silva or Jones comes along with good striking combined with a ground game they are a complete fighter. A good Jui-jitsu guy can't dominate anymore just like a good striker can't like the Iceman. Anderson is very fast and he knows how to stay on his feet. He should pick this guy apart very quickly.

Hah! I include his younger brother but forget him. But Saulo's MMA career was so brief. He decided early on it just wasn't for him.

Striking changes the dynamics of the sport considerably. Even more so psychologically.
