Jay seems happy in that clip. I really hope he gets a top 3 finish at the Olympia, and that he deserves this without getting a gift from the judges.

Referring to one's critics as "haters" is the second quickest path to irrelevance.

The quickest path to irrelevance is posting on a "bodybuilding" message board.   :-\

Who cares if he doesn't win? He's a non retired bodybuilder. He should be doing shows if he can still make a living at it. I never understood why everyone thinks just because a former mr Olympia loses that he has to retire. Like Deion said, ride it until the wheels come off.

This. A professional BBer enters a bodybuilding contest, and people attack him as if he got caught with kiddie porn. "Haters" is the perfect word. He seems like a normal guy who happens to be an elite BBer doing what he does for a living....and people have a real problem with this .I don't get the Cutler hate, and I'm not a fan of his type of build.

Looks to me like he's rounding into shape and the year off may have done him some good. Will he win ? I doubt it, but he'll be in shape  and very big. . Out of his hands after that.

IF IF IF the goal is to win titles.   If the win is to make more $, then Jay may make more $ by NOT competing.

He's probably still banking 500k a year (minimum) with guest posings, supps, autographs, etc.  I'd guess closer to 1 to 1.25 million.

First place at Olympia is only $250,000.

If he diets down and is small, then places 9th - does he still make 1.25 million next year?  I dunno.  Some of that "top 2 in the world" shine disappears.

Depends what his goal is, obviously.  Does Jay care more about winning titles or stacking up $?

He looks good, no receptor or nerve damage.
He can probably finish in the top 5 at the Olympia.

Yes, that's possibly one reason.

But I remember Jay talking about sleeping in periods.... 4 hours, then wake up and go to bed later for another period.
Unorthodox training times could be linked to that too.

You saying this of all people is the biggest shocker to me,  Someone as knowledgeable as you and yet you get this one wrong.

Competing gives him 10's of thousands of dollars worth of free exposure per month.

How you think he will make more by not competing is beyond me. One Olympia prep will give him a 100 articles in 10 different magazine, will give 200 threads in different forums, will give him an accumulation of a few million hits in all his youtube videos and will make his line up 3 times bigger at the expo's.

Competing at the O triples his exposure, hence triples his pay cheque from not competing

Dude, come on. If someone said you could be in the top five of your field, make decent coin, and you liked doing it, why wouldn't you continue? He probably gets his roids for free, either through dealing or "sponsors", so all his prize money is money in the bank. He's a dork, but he seems smart with his money, why not try and make a hundred or so grand for a contest?

I'm not saying he doesn't do the olympia prep, all the articles and videos, etc.

I'm just saying, if I'm jay, and it's 3 weeks before the O, and I realize I'm out of the top 6 or even the top 10... Do I get an injury and miss this show?

Enjoy the exposure, maybe work as guest emcee, etc - but imagine Jay at 9th?

Hey, I know it's a silly nonsense, lamebrain theory.  But it's just like NBA fans talking about why Derrick Rose won't come back at 90%.

Jay and the industry have been mutually beneficial to each other. If he comes in shape, they will not fuck.him and drop him out of the top 4 or 5...and that's worst case.

How they used to train. Hard and heavy with volume. Very little machines, no air conditioning and no 45 degree leg press back then. These guys today wouldn't last a day in their shoes. What you see in the video is a real bodybuilding gym. The only other one that I've seen here in the US that would be close is Metro flex in Arlington.

He can still guest pose like Ronnie did. He can still get and maintain decent sponrships like Ronnie and Dorian did. He can maintain Supplement lines, like Ronnie and Dorian have, he also has wisely invested his money.

The one thing he cannot do (and in my opinion *should not do*) is try to win the Mr. O again.

The game this time has changed. His physique will no longer be rewarded, and, once again, IMHO.. never*should* have.

He is wide, blocky and un-aesthetic. Yes, he is big, but he always has those "questionable" smooth spots.

Dexter should have beat him at least once, but that is now the past.

The game now is between Shawn Rhoden and Phil Heath. Forget Kai, Branch (a crappier version of Jay with great workout etiquette) and forget Cedric Millan or Roelly Winky. Brandon never stood a chance.

If Heath can carry the political torch (and I'm sure they've been watching.. then maybe) but my money is on Rhoden.

Bye, bye, Jay. Go out in style ~

2009 he was taking it back from Dexter, who did a piss poor job as ambassador of bodybuilding. Now he's gotta beat Phil and his huge following. Plus his arm is fucked. I can him gifted 2nd if Kai looks like shit, and I don't think Rhoden is a threat all. Top 5, that's it.

I've always said, we will never see jay on the competitive stage again.  Just my prediction.  Maybe I'm wrong, who knows.

I just think he will have to choose - love for competition, or making a gigantic pile of $$$ in the coming years.  A poor olympia showing and all those numbers dry up.

Or, I'm referring to what king RONNIE COLEMAN said.  He admitted it was very hard for him to face getting old and not having that kind of muscle any more.  He said Jay is going to diet down and suddenly realize, in the last weeks before the show, that he is just going to be SERIOUSLY outmuscled by the competition.

I don't consider myself to be a HATER.  Jay is one of the greatest Bbers of our generation, probably second only to Ronnie over the last decade or so.  He's one of the best.  But age is age is age.   Maybe he doesn't consider it to be an option yet - but dieted down, Kai and Phil are going to have two more inches of arm muscle and 6 more inches of thigh muscle.  THat's just nature.  Jay is SMART.  I don't think he'll let himself be embarrassed standing next to those guys if he can't bring it.  No way.

Jay = one of the best ever.  Respect.  But probably not going to be able to come close to Kai and Phil level, or even branch and others for that matter.

I agree with you. Jay's a professional and he has publicly commited numerous times.

I will say Rob's last post is a good argument though. I just don't agree.

I will say Rob's last post is a good argument though. I just don't agree.

See, LAST YEAR it was the exact same thing.  Jay had the biceps surgery in February, and assured people all year "I'm still doing the O!"

I was one of the LONE voices saying "oh, he's not gonna be ready, no way he'll compete" and it ended up being the case.

I'm not hating - it's smart business.  There are casual fans (that buy the bulk of supplements, I'd guess) that'll just read some quick mention of "Jay sustained a last minute injury in 2013, but he's READY FOR WAR" at the 2014 Olympia!  Showdown of all showdowns!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

granted, I'm jaded :)  I'm a cynic and I'm always looking for that sneaky move when people have a motive and lay the groundwork for it.  I'm probably wrong.  But hey, it's a cheesy gossip board, it's what we do here.  it's not hating, tho.  I'm saying he's too SMART to compete and get owned by 2nd tier guys.  He'll be 3 weeks out and what Ronnie said will make sense.

I think derrick rose was smart for sitting out in 2013.

he was kicking ass in practice, CERTAINLY ready to return before the playoffs.  But he wasn't at 100%.

his contract is guaranteed in NBA, but his endorsements are $260 mil with Adidas alone.  Long-term matters.

Cutler's goals are what dictates this.   Compete vs Cashing in

Maybe I'm a pessimist for saying Jay is more about leaving on top (well, #2 in the world) and riding that for 5 years, as opposed to Ronnie, who got a gift 4th and guest posed and got worse and worse.  Maybe I'm wrong and don't know anything.  But hey, someone has to play the village idiot, why not me?  :)

I thought he was doing some sort of cable pulldown for back, then he said he was doing abs. Nice form.

Quoted for truth!

It actually is perfect form, the range of motion for abs is very minimal and a longer stride is the wrong way. HTH

OK I see what you mean, yes agree now to much lats came into play but still enough on the abs to fatigue them.

I originally thought you meant it was not enough range but you were talking about too much lats coming into play and I agree  ;)

and they also trained each bodypart twice a week while training 3 or 4 bodyparts in one session, not like this one bodypart each workout just once a week horseshit

hey, i just love to debate and play devils advocate.

But I do put some credence into what ronnie coleman said.  He went thru it at that age.  Once he dieted down, he quickly realized how small and weak he was compared with past years.

IF that happens, it'll all come down to jay's competitive spirit vs. long term profitability.   Jordan was a true competitor - cost himself long-term marketbaility by sucking with the Bulls for a few years.  Jordan drive by $ would have retired after that final jumper and retired on top.

Your point of view will explain why Jay hasn't updated his "X weeks out" from the Olympia videos on YouTube.
Maybe Jay's sponsors demand that Jay do the olympia.. who knows. But I highly doubt such info is publicly available.

I think training at 1:30 am, ranting about the haters, isn't something we would see from Jay five years ago.

There's a good chance he hasn't even accepted it or faced where he is yet.  Or he hasn't decided.  Or he thinks he can work through it.  Who knows what pressure he's feeling.

Again, NOTHING BUT RESPECT for JAY!   Not hating on him.  He's 2nd best of this generation, behind Ronnie.  But I listen to those words of Ronnie - He's been in that same spot.  Whatever he chooses, I wish Jay the best.  One of the best of our generation.

Dude, Jordan still has the top selling shoes and clothing. His marketability is stronger than current NBA players.

Yep, people have bought into the fallacy that working one body part per week is plenty, the biggest crock of shit I've heard to date when it comes to training. Right up there with TV gimmicks.

Correct.  BUT would it be stronger if he hadn't returned to be average with the Wizards?  I think yes.  He makes $80 mil a year now.  Woudl it be $81 mil (or more) if he won that last title and stepped away?  I think so.

Most kids wearing his clothing today weren't old enough to remember him even playing. They just wear it because it's popular. And a good product.

I think he could've played a year of two more with his last team on the Bulls. The Wizards sucked. The Bulls still had a few decent players left when he retired. He should've came back to a decent team. He just had a financial stake in the Wizards and thought he could make them better.
