He also had a good run with Michael Mann in Thief, Manhunter, Luck, Miami Vice, and Crime Story.

Always surprised he didn't show up in Scorsese's work.

He seemed a natural at playing gangsters.  Any truth to the story he was a cop? Or was that just Hollywood spin?

Cop for 20yrs.

My patient's late husband was very good friends with him.  Her husband actually was integral in bringing down some of the 'connected' guys in Chicago.  I will find out, but there is a famous one that actually he (late husband) got into a fist fight with.  He also wrote a book.

Yes, as mentioned, he was a Chicago cop. On the movie Thief, Michael Mann hired a bunch of policemen to act as advisors, and later gave most short roles in the film. You can see quite a few in the scene where Caan's character doesn't pay the protection money and is tuned up at the station house. Farina has a slightly meatier role as a bodyguard in the film. That's where he got his start.

See him here 4:58 - 6:00 -

.

That film was a cleaned up version of the life of a famous mid western robber named Frank Hohimer that most of the guys Mann picked had dealings with.

Doctor: Dennis Farina Was Being Treated for Cancer

NEW YORK (AP) — Dennis Farina’s doctor says the actor died while being treated for lung cancer.

Farina, who died Monday after suffering a blood clot in his lung, had been under treatment for the cancer for several months, according to his cardiologist, Dr. Marc A. Kates.

Thirteen years ago Farina had been diagnosed with “a small cancer that was treated and cured with surgery,” Kates said in a statement on Tuesday.

But in recent months the cancer had recurred and, despite ongoing treatment, the blood clot “unexpectedly and suddenly took his life,” Kates said.

The 69-year-old Farina, who died in a Scottsdale, Ariz., hospital, was known for such films as “Get Shorty” and “Out of Sight,” and for TV series including “Law & Order” and “Luck.”
