I did 30 minutes tonight on what they labeled "hard" for my height weight - 5 8 195lbs.
I don't think this is remotely accurate

534 calories for 1/2 an hour stair climbing at a weight close to 200 pounds? Sure. These calorie burn algorithms don't take into account gross efficiency, but they aren't too far off.

Seemed way too easy for 500 calories burned TBH

Push a prowler, flip a tire, run 300 yard shuttles. Stay athletic.

It cannot detect cheating by putting weight on arms rested on the bar
For more accurate measures they're should be no handbars on cardio machines

Got it. Only reason asking is because for me to burn 500 calroies on the Conxept 2 Rower - seems like i have to put out a lot more exertion and effort for similar time frame.

I think they are garbage
You can bust a gut doing high intensity bike riding for 30 minutes and it says you have burned around 200 kals, thats not even a half a bar of chocolate. ::)
Would you feel better doing the cardio or just not having the chocolate nfor the same result?
If it is the same then just not having the chocolate is way easier.

what about the affect burn effect?
there's calories burned during exercise and then calories burned post exercise, during the recovery from the training bout

It doesn't matter just right down the calorie count everyday on paper it will remain the same, much as a weight scale say it's off a bit who cares key is just note it. Ok say you weigh 200 lbs and the scale says 400 lbs just right it down an if lose to 350 on that scale you lost 50lbs, not rocket science.

They are off but what ever total they give you is consistent with your weight, time and intensity so it is a useful number.

The stats on any piece of cardio equipment should only be used as a point of reference to measure your previous progress on the same machine.

True.

But if you are just going for a certain time frame - its pretty much useless?

No, because it doesn't account for your BF. Ex: 195 @ 25% bf (146.25 lbm) will burn significantly different than 195 @ 10% bf (175.5 lbm). That's almost 30lbs difference in muscle.
