Elvis Presley or Michael Jackson?
EP
MJ
-
I think both did equally, just different types of music. Elvis impacted rock and roll and MJ pop.

Hmmmm, perhaps. I know there are many people who say, overall, MJ had a greater impact on music than EP, independent of their different styles of music.

But don't you think that was only possible by a larger population and more people had access to music and more options of music players during MJ's time?
-
whacko
-
white man doing black music very well..
vs.
black man doing... whatever music you call mikes.. very well... singing in a falsetto.... and becoming a white woman. Not to mention a fucking pedophile!
Why is this a debate?
-
Due to MJ, music videos are what they are today.
MJ had almost every little kid moon walking and break dancing. And wearing a glove.
And had kids buying Hot Dog magazine (from Scholastic) to learn the latest MJ moves.

Oh yes, that is possible.
I am just reporting what I read :)

Although I think MJ is very talented, there is just something about seeing Elvis Presely on stage, which is absolutely mindblowing in terms of being musically talented.

My boy Arce had an impact as well.

No, shut up, shitzo.

Presley influenced better musicians like the beatles, led zeppelin, and others . Without Mj we wouldn't have ushers and justin biebers.

You should relax a little.

This is an important observation. EP did influence many great bands.
MJ, unfortunately influenced people like Usher and JB, which you cannot even compare to the beatles or led zeppelin.

Elvis Presley or Michael Jackson?

Elvis Presley no question about it. Michael Jackson even admitted it.
-
The King.

-
Elvis Presley no question about it. Michael Jackson even admitted it.
Ahhh, when did MJ say that?
-
IMHO.......BOTH EP AND MJ HAD EQUALLY MAMMOTH IMPACTS ON MUSIC.
BUT I MUST SAY THAT TWO GROUPS THAT ALSO MADE HUGE IMPACTS ON MUSIC WERE YES AND RUSH......THEY REALLY USHERED IN THAT UNIQUE SOUND IN THE 70S AND 80S.
MJ AND ELVIS JUST ABSOLUTELY TOOK THINGS TO A WHOLE OTHER LEVEL!!!!
-
My boy Arce had an impact as well.
And make no mistake

Lol. Sorry SF1900, I have learned the hardway that you cant have a serious debate on the G&O. ;)
-
The 2 most charismatic and talented solo performers ever and by a large margin, both had a huge impact and there is no clear winner.
-

If you really want to get technical. James Brown influenced Michael Jackson. And James Brown is probably the most sampled artist of all time. The man's catalog had more hits than Elvis, and was Elvis' contemporary.

:D ;D

MJ
The Black artists of the day that the white record producers stole from.

Shizzo's old band, The Shizzles was quite good

Wonderful. But we are debating EP and MJ, not JB.

Stop trying to moderate the thread. Let it go as it may.

Always :)

Always :)
Would you like a 6 pack of Mike's? :-*
-
Elvis, the king of rock, country, gospel, you name it. Best singer of all time, could hit low baritones and highs that would embarrass an opera singer, even get a little grungy dirt in his voice
-
Wonderful. But we are debating EP and MJ, not JB.
Well, MJ...more hits, better selling albums, better entertainer, influenced a generation..
Stations no matter if they are progressive, rock, r&b/hiphop, will always play MJ, that can't be said about Elvis.
Both had drug issues=draw
Both had issues with significant others, Elvis liked the Young, MJ, well you know=draw
Elvis got fat, and MJ went white=draw.
-
Elvis helped create and define a genre of music. I've met many musicians who acknowledge Elvis as either a direct, or indirect influence. ie He influenced the people they aspire to emulate. I've never met a single one in my 36 years as a musician who cited Michael Jackson as an influence. Not a knock on MJ, but this has been my experience.

Of course you'd say MJ.

Hey, he's more revelant to men and to you (part of this generation), and if it wasn't for him with his Thriller and Smooth Criminal videos, music videos wouldn't be what they are today.
Elvis is not really revelant to today's music.

I just said, "who had a greater impact on music"
I never said todays music.
And todays music sucks anyway.
-
If you consider ALL things... MJ.... Not just their music, but the fact MJ bought the damn entire beatles collection and owned all of the rights.
When you do something that ridiculously epic, and you set your kids and their kids up with that alone.
-

This. Mj is a largely irrelevant to musicians.

Well, then that would probably be Michael. About the main thing really that Elvis did, was to turn music stars into sex symbols...and used Showmanship...MJ took that to another level.
-
MJ was awesome, but Elvis had a voice he could never dream of matching. Elvis' voice was not only versatile, but was very emotive, with admirable range and command of a sure vibrato. Note in the examples below how many times he shifts from baritone, to lyrical baritone, to, at the very end of My Way, the dynamic passaggio in spinto tenor A4 territory (with an intentional glottal stop!!).
Just listen:
Well, well...MJ could grab his crotch and yell out "Hee-hee!" and "Cho'mon!" like no other!
-
HAHAHAHA! MJ was extraordinary. Two different kinds of performers; both very rare talents.
"When comes such another?" Shakespeare, Julius Caesar
There shall never be another...
-

haha, sure. ::) ::)
Stick to posting fancy cars.
-
It's a tie for me.
I consider Sinatra, Elvis, the Beatles and MJ the goat's of music.
But MJ has something over those men, since a young boy he was making music, was great already with his brothers, then changed the game as an adult.

Don't be mad, if you think otherwise say so...
And i don't just post fancy cars...

I agree, but without Elvis you have no Beatles, most likely!
-
EP, no contest!
-
I agree, but without Elvis you have no Beatles, most likely!
yeah that's probably true
but elvis only sang, as he wrote neither lyrics or chords, while the beatles wrote all the lyrics and chords for all of thier tunes, so therefore the beatles win
-
Elvis. The look, the voice, the charisma, the direction he took music. Everything about him. Elvis was the gateway from old school crooners to modern rock and roll.

99% of white posters will say elvis, 99% blacks will say mj.... end of thread

Elvis Presley- king of rock & roll
Michael Jackson-king of pop

In musician circles black musicians are highly influential. Michael Jackson just isn't included with them.

I would say that most wouldn't class as an influence as he is too hard to Impersonate, his vocal style is so unique, I've never heard anyone sound remotely like him, even his impersonators don't try to sing, just dance.Compare that with elvis where every town has a few dozen impersonators who can pull off a respectable impersonation of his voice, though not as good as the real thing.lets face it, what is more achievable, to play the guitar and sing like McCartney or sing and dance like MJ?
-
MJ couldn't play not one instrument and had his vocal chords surgically altered when he got older...hence the reason why he had that weird goat thing going on with his vibrato on his last albums. Now Prince on the other hand can play over 10 instruments and is one of the greatest guitar players in the world....and isn't a druggie.

MJ could play the piano but his act was based on dancing, and no one cares about Prince lol
And Prince did use drugs , he had a mini run....MJ was on top and artist of an important decade, the 80s.

Music & drugs go hand in hand just as bbing and steroids.

Just making a comparison. Show one clip of MJ playing the piano or one ounce of proof Prince did drugs. Not to undermine MJ's "talent".
-
It's not just about talent, it's about impact.
Elvis paved the the way for Jacko. Without Elvis, no Jacko.... Everything would have followed a different trajectory.

#33 out of 100 according to Rolling Stone.....
Ha. Exactly. Fucking Rolling Stone, a joke my friend. A bad, bad joke. He'd a decent player, no doubt, but in no way one of the greatest.
-
Elvis by a wide margin.
-
Ask yourself this:
Who would you rather go out and have a drink with?
Or, if you could just meet one of them, who would it be?
Elvis, hands down-

In a sense. It was James Brown that paved the way for Michael. Many of his dance moves and act---the showmanship...

With Randy Rhoads at 36, Ritchie Blackmore at 50, Slash at 65 and Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and Ynwgie Malmsteen not even mentioned? That's some list...

Not gonna debate this lol
Go google Michael playing the piano...lol @ Prince being drug free.
Like I said no one cares about Prince....but you do. His music was alright, he had a mini run.
