Title: i always wanted to get to the bottom of PROPER BARBELL ROW TECHNIQUE
Post by: anabolichalo on August 10, 2013, 12:35:58 AM
and more specifically on the matter of using "body english"

seems like even jay cutler, notorious for his good form, uses an explosive deadlift-like combination move with barbell rows

does any decent bber actually keep his legs and torso motionless as he pulls the barbell to his hips?

find the smallest, skinniest dude in the gym and watch him do his barbell rows at less than 45degrees, with full range of motion and under strict control..... and do the exact opposite. (unless you too aspire to be 165lbs with perfect form on the barbell row)  :-\

the biggest freakiest bber at my gym does them nearly standing up and yanks his entire body

i think bb rows are one of the most counter intiutive exercises in the world when it comes to proper execution

prime mover in a barbell row is the rhomboids. i'm not a huge fan, despite dorian and Ronnie's endorsements. methinks they would've grown off of jumping jacks. I don't see how the angle you see bbers do it (70deg's) engages the "lats". it defies physics... or the bbing equivalent of 'physics'. lol.

you're basically doing a 45-70deg bent over powershrug/quarter-deadlift .

try sitting up in your chair and putting your right arm overhead with a reverse grip and pulling down/flexing while holding your fingers/hand of your left hand on your right lat... fell it contract? now stand up and lean forward in the same angle you would with a bend row and do the same thing... feel your lat contract? I don't... I the other muscles in the upper back contracting, but not the lat.

i did watch this video before

he says he just locks in 45 degree position and pulls the bar to his hips without any other body movement and thats that

but in his actual training videos he was yanking with his knees and hips to propell the bar

dorian yates

ronnie coleman

jay cutler

shawn ray

they ALL USE "BODY ENGLISH" TO START THE ROW

why is this

Used to go heavy with these and they are good but I avoid them now.

Don't trust them for my lower back...

I don't... I the other muscles in the upper back contracting, but not the lat.

disagree..... it's a big MMC lift in my opinion.  If you do it right, the upper arm moves exactly like it would in the last 1/3 ROM of a nautilus pullover.  Going too heavy ensures every muscle BUT the lats move the weight.  Lee Haney knew what was up, he wouldn't go over 185 or so.

Anabolic,  stand up straight holding a bar loaded w 1plate/side w an underhand shoulderwidth grip (overhand is safer, but it's easier to"feel" the lasts w underhand). Slowly bend over until you feel a stretch in the lats.  Keeping elbows tucked, pull the bar somewhere between your navel and sternum.  Stop an inch or so shy of actually touching your stomach.

Keep your hands as loose as you can and think not of pulling the bar up, but pulling your elbows back.

Start light, you've mastered the form/feel, only then go up in weight.

You don't have a life. You have an existence. Your only excuse to exist is to post phoney questions about bodybuilding on a forum where everyone thinks you're an idiot.

http://www.exrx.net/WeightExercises/BackGeneral/BBBentOverRow.html (http://www.exrx.net/WeightExercises/BackGeneral/BBBentOverRow.html) There is good reasons to do it like that. Only problem is that you have to have strenght in you lower back to keep that posture with the heavy weights. When I see people trying to do these rows in the gym, it seem to me that most of them are insane, because they start with the barbell on the rack. They take the barbell standing up, then bend down and start so called rowing. It usually look like this:
.

That is pityfull. If you take the barbell from the floor, you are already in the right position, so just straighten your knees littlebit and start rowing. If you rise your torso, you can use more weight, but if you don't, you don't fuckin need to, because the excercise is more effective. What you de facto do there, is rise your upper arm and elbow, so larger movement = more work in to the muscle  = better response = more growth. That 2" range of motion in the video is silly, while you can use 14" range of motion by bending your torso closer to 90° angle.

I used to retardrow with 455 for choppy reps and I'm sure it contributed to my back fallen apart

Nowadays i do them last when the upper back is fatigued and the lower back is still strong, 225 max for 8x8 weenie form reps.

Tldr = drugs and genetics make you big,I t doesn't matter if you lift safely or not for building size but swinging like a Tard will get you injured eventually
