A relative of mine struggles seems to have all of the symptoms of having ADD.
Anyone here dealt with this condition themselves or have a family member who did? What helped / what didn't? Was professional help necessary?
I'm very interested in getting him to put his life together, but I'm at a loss for what I can do.

I have it.
You can always.................. ....oh look a butterfly.

No such thing, a fictitious disease that was made up by drug companies to market a new pill.

Don't get involved with doctors, they will give him drugs that age him faster

Ask the resident Falcon for the "magic" food to fix what ails ya

tell your "friend" he was a spaz as a kid, and he grew up to be a even bigger spaz.
no pill will help him not be a spaz

The symptoms ARE very real. We're not all born the same.
-
I don't know about it but what's up with people saying it doesn't exist? Our brains are not wired equally, some people are born with tendencies to insecurity, depression, etc.

They are saying many people who they thought are ADD are actually Autistic.

My friend was diagnosed in 1991. It was the first time I ever heard of it.... we were seniors in high school. He always seemed to have a lack of focus... and sometimes he would just take off walking away or running while we would be standing around talking at school. It was bizarre. Not so much physically amped up, just his mind and eyes always going. Where his mind would go, his body would follow. They put him on medication for a couple of months back then, but it just turned him into a zombie. He got off them immediately and seems to be okay all of these years.... staying very active and a working professional guitarist. I think the chatter which goes on in his mind constantly can be manifested into his music writing and gigging. In his case, he just needs to stay busy.... sorta like a Type A. Hes married with two kids.

I think it is highly possible that I have ADHD. Looking back on my early school years, I exhibited a lot of the symptoms of this disorder. Of course it was not something people knew much about, if anything, that many years ago. I never took meds, I just muddled through with my teachers often complaining that I didn't pay attention. I'd score fairly high on IQ tests, but my grades often sucked. I remember one teacher telling my mom that I was off in a world of my own and that I was basically lazy.
Since ADHD usually continues into adulthood, I think I was lucky to work in fields where this problem had little negative affect. Plus, one learns to cope and adjust if they want to survive. Unfortunately, the first line of defense these days is drugs. While drugs can lessen the problem of ADHD they do nothing to help people who have it, cope with it. The mind is much more powerful than any prescription drug if you learn to use it to control, adjust to and alter, when possible, your behavior.

I agree. All of these crazy prescription drugs just treat the symptoms and not the cause. The power of suggestion is huge.

Difficult? Yes. Impossible? No. The problem is many people don't ever try.

I know I have it. I wish there was a diagnosis for it when I was in school. I'm a great multi-tasker though.

Thanks for sharing your stories.
He's far from stupid, just has a tough time with everyday life skills that help people get through life. There seems to be extreme inattention to priorities in life, and what needs to be done. A lot of times I think he needs to stop being lazy, and will his way through it but I think a person with an ADD mind has a tough time with these things.
He does seem to do okay when he stays busy, but if he has to self-regulate his activities he seems to have a very tough time.

Good thing the pharmaceutical industry discovered this disease. Otherwise, civilization would have come to an end.
Do you also battle with gluten?

Well I'm no scientist so I dont know. I don't really care how its classified as long as it provides some way of understanding and dealing with the difficulty that people have in life.

Another bullshit "disease."
Passion for cigars?

My nephew has ADHD and has been on Ritalin since he was a young child. He has a history of making poor decisions which have sometimes gotten him into serious trouble. In addition to being ADHD he could be a poster boy for children from dysfunctional families.
My sister and her husband (my nephew's stepdad) were both drug attics and alcoholics who never amounted to anything. They are both deceased now. My nephew ended up in foster homes much of his childhood. I seriously doubt he had any structure in his life prior to becoming an adult. He is a great guy with a heart of gold and as gullible as they come. I wish him the best in life.
What is impossible to know is whether his misjudgments are a result of his youth, his ADHD or his lousy childhood. My guess is all these things have played a role in the mistakes he's made. If I could grant him the wisdom to never make another bad decision, I would.
