lol you must be an expert. Flex arms and shoulders were literally TWICE the size of Colemans (and stfu with that Synthol shit pls, you can't double your arm size with Sythol ::))
-
when I was starting out, I was a huge fan of flex. and as a fan, you tend to ignore his faults. I think up until Phil Heath came along, Flex in '99 had some of the best arms bbing had ever seen in. Sure, some are bigger (dillet, mattarazzo, ect... even Ronnie), but IMO Flex had the best combination of size, shape, and separation I'd ever seen, but now I think he's a close 2nd to Phils. (even though i'm not a fan of Phils)..... now, 14years later, you can see how 'thin' flex's back really is and how much he relied on the squiggly-shape of his teres, and how his rhomboids jumped to give the illusion of a huge back.
in '99 I thought he should've won... now, looking back, I don't see how a harder, denser Ronnie could've been placed 2nd to flex with his thinly muscled back and baby soft glutes and hams.
and I really don't even care about the site injections... because out of a 20man ifbb lineup, maybe 2 don't have oil in their delts. and I thought Flex looked great standing relaxed before hitting the pose (not the bbing 'relaxed') with his delts and arms poppin... but not good enough to win the show.

well said. flex did look a bit soft in the glute and ham area when you compare it to ronnie. yes, his back was also not as "big" as ronnies either. ronnie also had better conditioned arms. flex looked a bit soft in the upper body, but still had amazing size, muscle shape, and separation.

Overrated.

Ronnie got straight firsts, Flex straight seconds, Cormier straight thirds. So with you have Flex first i'm guess i'm just as much an expert as you.

Twice the size of Coleman's... Hmmm no! At that time Ronnie's arms were ridiculous and his arms are considered some of the best of all time
-
Flex's arms and delts were full of oil. Ronnie was shredded. I also thought it could ahve gone either way with Cormier and Flex. Flex would have had an even bigger Mentzer like meltdown if that happened.
-
Anybody rather look at these vids from the past then the vids of bbers today?
-
Had him third behind Cormier
X2.
WoooSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Overrated.
I agree, His arms seem too big for his torso.... people got carried away with him though.

I suppose you haven't seen Flex's oiled up "Natural Freak" arms recently?

2005: Flex: Who else during your time do you think should have won but didn't?
Shawn: I thought you should have won in 1999, because Ronnie had lost something from 1998. I felt for you, when you took the medal off and shook your finger at the crowd. I could see it wasn't Ronnie you were trying to slight. It was the fact that you improved on flaws that Ronnie hadn't. In '98, Ronnie owned it, gyno included. He should have been marked down, but he had taken his physique to another level. In '99, he lost something. Just like you were at your best in '93. Sometimes we hit our peak and it's hard to get that back. That trophy should have been yours. Not because you were a better bodybuilder, but because you were better than Ronnie on that day.
-
oil arms/delts cartoonish looked pumped/flex just standing still, killed that crisp pre96 look when he look full muscle bellied but shredded and feathered legged and great shape.

Oil or not ,Flex is my favorite Physique of all time!
-
I would be ok if Flex had an O
Lee L.
Shawn R.
Chris C.
Kevin L.
also

GTFO, Flex couldn't hold Ronnie's jock strap. Look at the Ronnie video in HiDef and you will see that he was literaly unbeatable. Nobody has ever had his size, lines, and shape. Dorian was great with great conditioning but he flowed all wrong. Maybe Haney at his all-time best, but Ronnie's legs would have slaughtered him. Ronnie was King bitches. Deal with it.
-

This! Ronnie ate Flex's lunch. From the back, Flex almost looks like a guest poser just starting his prep.
-
Flex had a great physiqe
a great shape and lines but his back lat spread was weak, lacking width and thickness
his back double bi was great though, extremely detailed
-
Look at pics from the 98 Arnold Flex was at his all time best! I know this been brought up countless times, there are pics on Getbig!
-
I would be ok if Flex had an O
Lee L.
Shawn R.
Chris C.
also
Well this is probably where bodybuilding went wrong. If these guys had been rewarded over Dorian and Ronnie then the sport would have progressed in a different direction.

IMO I think Chris had better potential than Flex, Chris could carry more mass without ruining his physique , flex couldn't and when he played the size game it showed...
Flex = pretty physique looks good at lighter weight
Chris = powerful physique, can carry more mass, not much weaknesses if at all plus HAD calves

yes as far judging criteria go, no question.
but flex lines are much more pleasant on the eyes, the flow, the symmetry etc.
one example, their both midsections and abs shape.
potential is useless, the best potential most likely has some mulatto kid out there which will never step into a gym.
Ok then Chris is better

Got robbed that year. Flex was the clear winner.
Ronnie won in '99 easily, fair and square.
-
Genius, no doubt. ::)
-
Flex was rushed to the ER after that show, that was the start of the kidney problems.
-

great abs/seratus/midsection... great arms... good legs (from the front)
but he's a bodybuilder... where the fuck are his lats?
-
Flex was rushed to the ER after that show, that was the start of the kidney problems.
More like, he finally took it seriously. He has been in the hospital before, after other contests. And back in 1993, I believe it was after the Arnold, he said he was having pains.

no one really talks about Flex's weaknesses besides his obvious synthol but his glutes and hams were smooth as shit and that throws a lot of the poses out the window, sorry but Flex was not even clos to Ronnie that year.
-
Twice the size? LOL ok
Exactly .... Colemans arms were bigger than flex's by far only difference is Coleman was carrying the one if the biggest backs and a super chest... Whereas this wasn't the Case for flex

And his chest...??
It's all good huh as his arms blow his chest away

People with Flex's body type have that issue and look better at lower bodyweights---Melvin Anthony, Jojo Ntiforo

yup
Answer your pm man! ;D

Looking at these pics, why does it seem Flex, Cormier, Kevin Levrone, Nasser, and even Vic Richards seem to look like Mr. O than Phil or Kai, or Jay or any of the line up today?
-
1999 Mr. Olympia had a great line-up!
Dexter Jackson's first O (9th):
Paul Dillet last O (7th):
Shawn Ray (5th):
Chris Cormier (3rd):
Flex (2nd):
Ronnie (1st):

Got robbed that year. Flex was the clear winner.
That would be true if not for the fact that he wasn't.
-
I suppose you haven't seen Flex's oiled up "Natural Freak" arms recently?
Yikes. Maybe he thinks the tattoos keep his definition, and hide the synthol look?
-
Dillet was a freak. I saw him in person in the mid 90's when he was posing at a convention center in TO. He was in posing trunks, and walked past us in the hallway about 10 feet away from us before the show. People talk about how big his upper body was, but I was blown away with how massive and ripped his legs were. His calves looked like footballs. It was actually laughable to a human being that massive, with such a tiny waist.
-
only two things kept flex from winning a mr.o. 1-dorian yates 2-ronnie coleman.
-
It wasn't even close. Flex was so far behind Ronnie it's not funny.
-

Gal I agree that for shape Flex was astounding. However, the muscle bellies of Ronnie when he had that tight waist. Dude was the best of all time. I love Flex, but he didn't cut the mustard bodybuilding wise compared to Ronnie. Now, Flex probably had the best lines ever but Benafatto was damn good too.
