i always thought it made sense - when trapped with no hope for food - for the smaller guys to team up and kill the biggest dude first, and eat him.

Aside from the fact he contains the most meat - it also makes sense that should the fate befall any of them - it WILL be the biggest dude raining down the blows that end their life. Better to pre-emptively take out the threat (Bush doctrine approved).
