I was in the front row at the 1990 Nationals at the Shrine Auditorium in LA when Al'Q won the Lt Hvy and Overall titles....he looked fantastic.
Al tore both of his quads/tendons above the knee and had to have them reattached, do not know if he competed after that.
He was a champ though.
-
handsome man
nice physique
glad he never deliberately killed anybody
-
i think he did try a comeback after his muscle tear but it was short lived.
and yes he had a great build

Al Q, did compete after that . . . I think he did the Olympia. I trained with him a couple of times . . . a great bodybuilder.

No it wasn't.....

I was there in the front row and knew the HVY WT Winner (and many others competing)-and AlQ was most definitely not drug free (or anyone else...lol...)-My buddy in the heavies took second in the World Championships 2 weeks later behind Alchim Albright........ ;D
ALQ was the clear winner of that show-hands down.
Ronnie Coleman was also in the Heavy Weight class.........cant remember where he placed though......Rick Stephenson took 5ht-I remember that!

Good to see something different, in light of recent events. lol I just hope that bodybuilding doesn't get a bad name because of what happened.

Some interesting trivia from www.musclememory.com about the 1990 IFBB World Amateur Championships:
As mentioned, Alq' won the Heavyweight class.
Placing second to Alq' was.... none other than Darrem Charles. WOW. This was 1990, folks. And in 2005 Darrem is still moving steadily up the IFBB pro ranks and his best days are still ahead, IMO.
Placing 4th in the Lightweight class that year was an 18 year-old Aussie by the name of Lee Priest. Or was he still 17?
Other than Charles and Priest, just about everyone else who competed in that show is ancient history now, competitively speaking.
-
Lee got beat by Joe Dawson, who was the Lt WT wiiner of Nationals and again-being in the front row at that show-Joe looked great-he won a few national shows........great BBer-ex marine/armed forces guy.
