That pic of Wilf hack squatting is one i scanned about 5 years ago from a copy of Muscle and Co,it had a great pic of his hamstrings on the leg curl machine,he was sponsored by Ford motors (who he worked for),hence the t shirt.I saw him when he won the 84 british title in the lightweights, the guy was absolutely flawless.

katz had a small part in generation iron, they showed him briefly as a judge. and then still looking for his t-shirt like in pumping iron.

didn't put much of eder on history thread he was one of the earliest poerhouses but was blackballed by hoffman as a professional for whatever that was before the mr olympia. actually i think paul anderson was also branded because he wabnted to make money for his youth home from strength exhibitions. he tirned to pro boxing and wrestling also to accomplish his endeavors.

i looked in the keys book[ thing is immense], he doesn't mention much about nautilus only to incoporate the machine for the back, triceps, and biceps in the exercise section which is mostly what the book is. will check his other books when i get a chance.

kids these days think all these shots are photoshopped or fake weights. nobody can comprehend a five plate raw bench anymore. when I moved to Calgary in the 80's I knew at least 25 guys that were legit five plate plus benchers. now the population has increased 50 % and I bet there aren't 5 guys that can do that unassisted.
hard training is a thing of the past.

damn! them arms are a LEGIT 19 inches (but i bet that he claimed that they were 22 inchers) and he's got a LEGIT 31-32 inch waist (guys nowdays have legit 19 or even 20 inch arms, but their waists are at least 40 inches :D :D :D)
IMPRESSIVE
how tall was he and what did he weigh?
-
If you accept that Lou was 6" 5` then gunnar was about 4 inch shorter,he competed in the heavyweight class, won the european champs in 81 and placed 2nd to Lance Dreher in the worlds, then a year later 2nd to Lee Haney.

here's Pouliquin's arm measurements of 4 pros 10 days after thier contest ie. they were fully "filled out"
Bodybuilder A
Height: 6'0"
Weight: 286 pounds
Cold arm measurement: 20.62"
Bodybuilder B
Height: 5'3"
Weight: 228 pounds
Cold arm measurement: 20.25"
Bodybuilder C

probably successful bodybuilders with small bone structures. I have thick bones, so my muscles look a lot smaller than they measured .. even when my arms were 20and 7/8's they looked like shit.

b is priest, d is milos, and a is dillet (i think)

lee priest was a trur freak of nature even joe roark of ironhistory.com has to admit that lee's measurements defy description considering height and weight. hazbin a lot of guys on here grew up with articles debunking guys with large measurements. sergio arm was claimed to be a mere 20 and 3/8 or so arnold 19 7/8, mentzer 18 3/4. hard to believe .
-
than you had other writers writing from the other side. saying 25 inch arms would soon be common.
-
:)there's no way that arm is just slightly over 20.
-
but a well developed, defined arm will be impressive no matter the difference of a few inches.
-
:)
-
heres my untrained arm still measuring 19''. i never took a picture with a tape measure when it was over twenty inches.
-
:)there's no way that arm is just slightly over 20.
it looks much bigger coz he's got tiny joints and a pea head
Mentzer's ON STAGE arm was 18.5 inches
Zane's was maybe.... maybe... 17 inches
-
heres my untrained arm still measuring 19''. i never took a picture with a tape measure when it was over twenty inches.
that's a big, big arm dude
and not to be a jerk, coz i like you and you are a good guy
but, that arm isn't stage ready (but yes, it is big and impressive)
big ach had well over 18 inch arms as a fatty, but when he got down to contest level leaness his arm was barely 16 inches
-

offseason if one eats till smooth trying to gain an ounce 'natural ahem as big ach was not smart,1st the diet must burn the fat/smoothness,then lowering carbs each wk and as one gets leaner shows wkly improvement, then u hit that cruising time 4 wks out look where u almost look stage worhty and thats the best loo then u dry out last few lbs of water last wk and u either are shredded and carb full and nice, are shredded and small but still respectable which works but if someone is as ripped and bigger in your weight class your fukked, and then it all goes wrong your lean but smooth out due to some miscalculation or nerves ..hazbin has stated this one many times,he could have been pro but mistimed the last few days he'll tell ya...
-
all that's true nj, but it still didn't address my point about arm size on a stage ready physique ;)
-
all that's true nj, but it still didn't address my point about arm size on a stage ready physique ;)
its allillussion, mentner 18.5 thick joints /thick natural forearms/had ability to train heavy/hard/5'8ish/.....zane thin joints /trained lighter side /17 inch on small torso/5'9 posed his size tohis advantage and one more ripped than mentzner ever could, with zane and illussion when he was in yrs 69/75 he was bigger 'looking'but looked better 77/79 due to ripped condition'dry to thebone.its all relative too much to argue could go on and on and on.......
-
that's true about zane and that's why i firmly believe that my ideal ripped bodyweight is about 165-170
zane @ 187 SMOKED zane @ 205 even at the same level of conditioning
his frame just wasn't meant to hold over 2 bills ripped
-

205 zane or the last yr he competed had a wider waste and his bodyparts fuller but they fell into each other not 'pretty'like past where they shaped /hung of frame like sculpture, this was due to age and it seemed for him a more 'chemicaled look'for him.ofc he used but it was more different look.this,,,
-
yep his waist got thicker/wider and he lost his beautiful flow :'(
i have his training journals and in 82 he really focused on heavy lifting, especially for his back and he did lots and lots of pin pulls ??? :-X :-\
this really shows the great importance of having a very tight and tiny waist ie. body sculpting ;) 8)
-
phweeww...got my point across with u without long debate :D,, :P,,,i'm used to your way's luckily..all good.in the end u like mentzers's training with zane's build and thats your goal sorta, now executed it with results is next step.and on the 'chemical'front listen to the 'guys'who might/could steer the right info re:orals...careful.
-
i hear ya man, but i'm firmly convinced that i can stay on very low doses and hit my goal of 165-170 RIPPED
the training is much more important than others say, i know coz i was on higher doses and did shit training and got near zero results, and then i went to lower doses but trained very effectively and made very good gains
if i can temper my compulsiveness ie. not train every goddamn fucking day then i'll be well on my way :)
-

dude training is freaking the 'main'thing then food/then 'drug's...believe me ,i train like a beast a 'smart beast tho...4 days normal /heavy/normal breakup groups,5th is a total pump at home i have decent set up at home and i cruise 45 minutes set to set exercise to excersise to stay full on weekend lol,,,,
-
i'd say training then drugs then "food"
i've ate very healthy and how they say to eat ie. chicken breasts, tuna, green leafy veggies, potatoes etc and i ate crap and there was no difference in my results
my results came from very good and productive training and keeping the cal levels within a certain range ie. counting cals
also, my protein intake was relatively low
for me at least training crushes "diet" and it's not even close
you saw how ripped i got last may and i was still downing colas and ice cream along with a moderate amount of protein
what i did was keep my cals in check and it ripped me the fuck up 8)
i'll be doing something like this again soon, but i won't take the cals so low and i'll do it a bit more gradually and slowly
before i was @ bodyweight times 12 and it ripped me but this time i'll start at bodyweight times 15 and i'm very confident that it will rip me the same, but it will just take a little bit longer
-
yep his waist got thicker/wider and he lost his beautiful flow :'(
i have his training journals and in 82 he really focused on heavy lifting, especially for his back and he did lots and lots of pin pulls ??? :-X :-\
this really shows the great importance of having a very tight and tiny waist ie. body sculpting ;) 8)
the shitty thing for me is i wasn't thick jointed to begin with. i thickened all my connective tissue lifting the huge weights the magazines bullshitted about the pros lifting. 120lb. hammer curls and crazy things like that. my wrists probably grew two inches over twenty years of power training. then i met alot of pros and found out they trained way lighter than the mags said.

the mags are/were and always will be full of shit ie, thier major reason for existing was to sell supps to naive kids (imo that shit's evil and i'd gladly cave thier heads in for taking advantage of kids like that >:()
and speaking of "ungodly strength" even Mentzer wasn't so very strong for his size and bodyweight IMO
-
very interesting points from everyone here. i saw mentzer in person in his heyday offseason, and his arms were really impressive although they were reported to never be over 19 inches.
-
wellhaz is here, and i will certainly add what i can been training non stop since 87/88,competed 91/92/96,just love training/fueling day to day food wise and staying great shape in 40's ,gave up the bulking 20/30's ,settled into my build finally...

Mentzer
1. Superior genes.
2. High IQ.
3. Good hair.
4. Good triceps lacking biceps.
5. Died at 49 from steroid abuse.

mike was 5'9 and competed at 215. i'm basically the same height and competed at 239, but didn't look anywhere as impressive. this suggests mike had a very slight bone structure.

oh ya, I did them. wasnt' strong on them, a plate and a ten is about the heaviest went on them. there were plenty of guys doing two plates a side on fairly strict curls back in the nineties.

amazing how different two arms of the same measurement can look.. bicep length is a huge factor. the shorter the bicep, the more deceptive the measurement.

there's alot of factors going into i think
like arm length, wrist size, size of your head (if you got a pea head like sergio had then that helps ;D) and of course shape and length of the arm muscles
-
Peanut heads seem to always have the advantage.

yup, my arms look like shit, but my wingspan is seven inches longer than my height. and my bicep is so long I have no gap at all at the elbow.

so i bet you have a damn strong pull (deadlift) right?
-
so i bet you have a damn strong pull (deadlift) right?
believe it or not, my best of the three lifts was the bench. I moved the bar probably a 24 inch range of motion, but I could bench 4 plates for strict reps with no spot. I have had spine problems since my teens, so I could never deadlift heavy dammit. which sux, because I always wanted to move the big weights.

my dead sucks and in fact when Bob Lorimer trained me (he's the son of Jim Lomier, the man who ran the Arnold Classic for many many years, and yeah it's hard to believe he trained me lol) he used to have the fitness girls pull with me, coz they were as strong (or should i say as weak :D) or stronger than me and he wanted to humilate me LOL

guess i'm kinda partial to Dennis T coz when i showed my swiss girlfriend a shot of him Mentzer and King Zane on stage at the 79 O she said that Dennis T was the hottest with those wideass delts

we'll see
i'll run the var til i run out of it, and then i'll switch up to winny
i'm testing out all of the compounds that i got now (ie. winny and var as my source gave me a bottle of each for helping his girl out with her english) to see how i react to them and so far i like var better than dbol as i react to it better (i even feel better on var than on dbol)
if the winny does me better than the var i'll get more winny, but if not i'll get more var even though the shit is damn expensive and 5 times the price of dbol >:(

D-MASS!!!! Anyone here have any updates on Dave???
last i heard he is still on ironage and actually on facebook too. he was supposed to be the first fully mechanized champ[useing machines exclusively for his training].

;)dave was at the arnold the year ironage had a booth.
-
Yep Funky Bro... Bent over rows.. the best mass exercise for the back. If you get lower back pain doing them then you have weak erectors and are not advanced enough to do them.
-
in the above shot you can see dave m. katz, michalik and joe meeko unfortunately the two former aau mr america are no longer with us. [sad to say both suicides].
-
dave got back into shape a few years ago , now he mostly hangs out with his greyhounds which he rescues.

reg is the man could use 185 lb dbs for reps in the incline db press. he said he wished he had tried 200's. this was when lifting heavy weight for bodybuilding was mostly unheard of [esp in europe]. he and marvin eder were quite a powerful workout team. when reg visited the states as a birthday present.

he originally started out training with fellow actor william smith when both were young. there were several articles in the mags like iron man and mmi but not all that much written on his training.

Robby has lived in my country (Netherlands) for a while and I know two veterans who knew him pretty well from that period. Not everyone had good experiences with him (I won't go into details), but I believe that he's one of the most genetically gifted bodybuilders ever.

i always thought it was the first pic with grant on top of the girl, however someone told me on rawiron.com that it was actually over the second pic with fc holding the girl overhead. apparently the girk didn't give her permission to be lifted overhead and sustained a back injury for which she sued.

correct guy was a superathlete before becoming a pro wrestler . teen age bodybuilding champ, gold gloves boxer, football player, discus thrower among other things. owned a lion while wrestling. invested in a poster of himself that bombed instead of buying a partnership in gold's gym before it took off.

Awesome, I knew Billy Graham had a background in bodybuilding and athletics before his pro-wrestling career but was unaware that he trained with Arnold and co and was so successful.
Such a shame that he is not given the credit he deserves in the pro wrestling world, he was such a pioneer and changed the business in so many ways. He paved the way for the likes of Hogan, Jesse Ventura and Macho Man and the rest of the 80's wrestling boom.

dammit. WHY DID I BURN MY OLD MAGS?
I had that issue of mmi. That was a two part article about him traing at Vinces. Thing I loved about mmi back in the day. I'd wait faithfully at the news stand for the new issue to come in. If u all remenber. Mmi had that real slick glossy feel and a slightly oily texture to it when hot off the press. U guys remember the slippery covers? Loved that mag.

first two issues of mmi, wish i had bought multiple copies back then... still have these... if you bought a lifetime subscription back then issue number 1 it would have cost you 99 dollars... eventually the lifetime sub thing went up to 149 dollars till it was discontinued...
-
Cool. I remember also u could buy back issues. They offered them near the back of the mag. Mmi was my hands down fav. I met bob at one of the first Arnold classics. Back then it wasn't caloed that. It was mr n ms international contest. Also back then u could walk right up to the stage n bullshit w the pros etc as everyone kinda just mingled. So I went up n no one was really around. I talked w bob n johnnie fuller. I had them autograph my t shirt. Having never touched a drug in my life bob says to johnnie this guy looks good. R u on equipoise? I looked at him surprised n he said...oh...I was just joking. But he wasn't. Anyway that's my lame story for the day.

Franco's legs were so short he couldn't stabilize himself to bench on most benches. Sick strong.
-
Chuck Sipes trained in his garage with very little equipment. For calves he used bricks. The 1959 IFBB Mr. America winner had an amazing physique with impressive abs. Crazy strong. He benched 570lbs weighing a little over 200lbs with a tee shirt. He didn't specialize in powerlifting, it was just part of his bodybuilding training. He played the banjo, painted ( I have one of his prints), and hunted with black powder rifles that was a rare thing to do back then. Too bad he killed himself. I don't know the circumstances and I hesitate to type this but I believe he had an affair and when his wife wouldn't forgive him he shot himself. Again I could be wrong. I know the guy that was gifted the banjo from the Sipes family. He is an avid player.
-
I have to laugh at the picture of Mr heavy duty, the exercise genius Meth Mike. Look at that form on the pullover. All crunched over pulling with everything EXCEPT the lats! lmao. Thats why he had no back! ( or chest or shoulders or arms legs or a MIND! ) Proper form is chest held up and pull with the elbows. But hey Mike knew what he was doing. smh.
