My doctor wanted me to get more cardiovascular exercise and he started me on walking. I'm now walking 30 minutes per evening and I feel tremendous.

I'll bite. If you walk fast for an hour a day you will be lean. If you walk on a treadmill at 3.8 miles an hour and every lap (400 meters) you up the grade 1% it will get you in shape quick. If every lap you up the grade and make it to 12% you are in decent condition. Just for clarification each individual lap gets a 1% increase. Your final lap is on level ground for a reward. So lap one is zero grade. Lap two is 1% grade, lap three is 2% grade and so on. Just check with your doc so you don't drop dead for you perma bulkers.

Since my arthritis took me out of the gym after a 60 year run I took up trail hiking. In the Phoenix area we hike a 4 mile loop over a 1200' rise 3-4 times a week then 1-2 miles on the streets the other days. This summer we bought a place in the White Mountains at 7000' elevation and have stretched our 4 miles a day in the forest out to 6. 6 days a week. I'm down 20 pounds all muscle loss. I wish to drop 10 more. Skinny coggers live a lot longer than chuncksters. Like Steve Reeves, my first mentor, I am adding small dumbbells to swing, box, press while I hike.

Agreed my Grandpa lived to be 100 yrs old walked to work and back for miles. Lived off home grown foods.

I'm actually walking on the sidewalk through my town. Very peaceful and refreshing. I've lost 7 lbs. :)

Walking or jogging outdoors must be stupid.
Much cooler to drive an hour to the gym and do treadmill for an hour.
Did you know that if you run or walk for 5miles the consumed calories will be roughly the same.
Walking takes around twice the time though. But the % of the burned calories will be more of fat.

i'd suggest walking up a hill... a mountain is best if you have one handy... relatively low impact and it's great for cardio and lower body development

Agreed! However, a lot of bicyclist are getting run over buy idiots in motorized vehicles lately. So, while bike riding is far less stress on the knees and internal organs, it isn't necessarily safe either. Of course, one can always go with the stationary bikes at the gym, but that is pretty boring.
