I live by the ocean and when ever I see a sail boat go by I wish I knew how to sail. Some of these sail boats go from NJ to Bermuda without any gas. It really blows my mind that it's 2013 and a sail boat is still great method of getting to where you want to go by boat. You have to see these boats with kitchens, bathrooms with showers, and great sleeping quarters.

Nothing lucky.  They used their default boat and lost 8 to the kiwis then the USA with nothing to lose switched boats using a prototype they had.  They figured either they'll lose one more or this boat will give them the advantage.  All of a sudden with the new boat they are going 10 knots faster and kicking the shit out of the kiwis.  Their new boat must be using some sort of new composite to make it lighter because they were above water almost every race after and just flying.

I love sailboats... monohulls, and especially multi-hulls..

10 year goal is to have a 45ft cat in a slip in Tortola. :)... but i'd settle for a 33ft monohull in a slip in san diego :)

this seems more like a battle of technology that actual sailing skills. Everyone should have the same boat thus making it a battle of skill and not of ultra light composite material

Same can be said of auto racing and even golf these days

There are a lot of high level sailing races the AC is just the only one that receives any coverage for the masses. The teams are fairly evenly matched in general. For the most part it comes down to the start and on course tactics, who makes the most mistakes. The boats themselves, with few exceptions over the years have also been evenly matched. There is only so much a naval architect can do in regards to aerodynamics and fluid dynamics given the parameters set forth before any boats are built.  There are high level races where each team competes using identical boats. Unless one is really into sailboat racing they would probably be akin to watching railroad tracks rust. IMNSHO The most badass of all sailboat races is the singlehanded around the world races, The Vendee Globe is a non stop, no assistance race around the world no crew, just one person.
the Velux 5 oceans race has stops in ports where repairs can be made again, no crew, just one person doing everything and trying to catch some sleep occasionally throughout each day.

I used to work on America cup sails. My father was in tryouts for 84 Olympic sailing. Shits in my blood and I hate the water go figure.

You should see Bob's Wild Oats XI + A$ 30 mil's racing boat or € 75m Sardinian house.
He finances Olympic equestrian events, BB no chance from vino maker.
How many BB sponsors Arnold ?.

Beautiful yachts.. long time ago that I made a sailing trip, on a much smaller one, about 23 foot. The feeling of sliding through the water with 20 degrees (or more) is amazing!
