Tom Clancy, bestselling author of crime fiction and military thrillers, died last night in a hospital in Baltimore at the age of 66.
Ivan Held, the president of Putnam Books, Clancy's publisher, confirmed his death to the New York Times and told them that Clancy "was a thrill to work with."
Clancy was born in Baltimore, Maryland on April 12, 1947. He is the author of the popular Jack Ryan series, among many others. His novels have repeatedly been #1 on the New York Times Bestseller list, and four of his books have been adapted for film, including his first, "The Hunt for Red October." His latest book, "Command Authority," is slated for publication this December.
Although most of his writing involved fictionalized accounts of the aftermath of the Cold War, Clancy has also penned a slew of nonfiction titles, including his "Guided Tours" inside nuclear warships and Air Force combat wings.
In addition to his literary ventures, Clancy co-founded Red Storm Entertainment, a video game developer that created games mostly based on the plots of his books, such as "Rainbow Six."
This is a developing story...

Just beat me...
RIP Tom Clancy.
-
Sad news, always loved his books.
-
Without Remorse is a darn good book to start with if you've never read him before. Very decent writer, especially the 80's, early 90's stuff.
-
May he play Reindeer Games in peace

I wonder if he saw an early draft of the movie.

New Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit Poster Lands
Kenneth Branagh's actioner gets a promo
As if to respectfully mark the death of his creator, Jack Ryan's pensive face adorns a new poster for Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. Tom Clancy may have passed away but his famous CIA analyst, a former naval office who's battled drug barons, rogue Republicans and Sean Connery's Lithuanian accent in his many screen incarnations, lives on in a reboot that hands the Langley security pass to Chris Pine.
As the artwork shows and the casting of Captain Kirk has suggested for some time, this Jack Ryan isn't a desk-bound wonk in the Alec Baldwin mould, but a ready-formed action hero. Kenneth Branagh's reboot is an origin story that returns him to his espionage beginnings - in this film, he's an injured Marine who gets the shoulder tap from CIA vet Kevin Costner to work as a high-level analyst.
The pair tackle a Russian oligarch (played by director Branagh, who also directs), who combines international terrorism with shenanigans on the finance markets in a highly dubious way that in the old days, would have guaranteed him an invite to the SPECTRE Christmas party. Keira Knightley is also along for the ride.
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit is out in UK cinemas on December 26.

you are aware R6 is a '98 video game. The 1st release on xbox was in 2003. Back in the time, R6 and Rogue Spear were pretty good.

I understand that. Just wondering why he hated the guy.
-
What did he die of? Did he know too much?
-
Why the hate?
Good techno-stuff early on - 'Hunt For Red October,' etc. Some really good spy stuff later on - 'The Cardinal in the Kremlin.' Then, the usual crap, and then the branding. Guy was Coach's Biblical chapter and verse.

What did he die of? Did he know too much?
A little late for that, dozens of books already released.

I don't follow.

This will hurt the Reading thread.

Definitely not new, been here since '99 or 2000. Maybe just not quite as active as most.
