Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is moving legislation to push the debt limit until Dec. 31, 2014, well beyond next year’s midterm election.
Senate aides estimate the bill would increase federal borrowing authority by about $1.1 trillion.
The administration estimates the nation would hit the upper bounds of its $16.7 trillion debt ceiling on Oct. 17, although in recent days, experts have said that deadline might be flexible.
Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) blasted Reid’s proposal for not including any spending reform.
“What he proposes is to raise the debt limit by $1 trillion but not do anything about the debt,” McConnell said. “Not a single reform to get spending under control. We’ve got a debt close to $17 trillion.
“Washington is borrowing nearly $2 billion — a day. And he’s fine with that,” he added.

Two reasons why I am not explaining this to you "in my words".
First reason is you don't live in this country. This problem doesn't concern you.
Second, if you have to ask why increasing the government's ability to borrow even more, at a time when the economy is in the toilet, is a problem then there is no hope for you.

Explain how it's a travesty in your own words. I have been asking for someone on the opposing side to articulate the details of their disgust but so far no one has said anything other then "you can't understand, it's American politics, it's our economy etc." ie.. bullshit.

Not that I know either way, but the way German law is set up (to be implemented in 2016) sounds better: constitutionally cap the growth in spending by limiting the size of the deficit. It could be set at 0.25% less than GDP growth or some such, with an exception clause for drastic emergencies -- something the Germans have as well.

I think Single-payer makes more sense, and wouldn't be so conflicting with our constitutional rights.
The best plan though, would be to address the real problem so everyone can pay for their own healthcare. Taking over healthcare isn't about helping people, you all know politicians and the powers that be could give a shit less about peoples lives, and health look at Iraq.
It's about power and control, anyone that can't see that is a fool.
