Stones, Aerosmith, Motley Crew, Poisen, Warrant, Cinderella and Boston are all great rock bands but the best has to be Queen or Bad Company.

What i will say is that if Phil Lynott hadn't gone off the rails, Thin Lizzy would have been RIGHT up there.

You best not be dissing on Winger. Of any pop-metal '80s band, Winger has scary members: Kip Winger has a degree in music composition; Reb Beach was one of the most in-demand session rock guitar players, prior to forming the band; and Rod Morgenstein is a MONSTER jazz fusion drummer. Like the music or not, but the musical weaponery in the group is unreal.

Wow, you know next to nothing about some of these bands. Guitar swing? Reb NEVER did/does that. And a payday? Is this why they continue to release records knowing they'll only maybe sell 15,000 copies or some shit? Tour small club-like venues? It's 20 years past that scene and they are still passionate about writing music together. For what? Big cash? YEAH, RIGHT.

And Journey is the Neal Schon show, whether anyone wants to believe it or not. He's a true musician who has crazy passion for all his music, Journey/solo/otherwise. Same with the cats who go through Journey's ranks.

Won't comment on TOTO because, although I know they're a group of sessions players, I don't know too much about their motivations. Steve Lukather is a beast player, though. As are the core members.

I'm not above being corrected about something. I knew of them back in the day and they were a session band put together to cash in on the hair metal bullshit. And I distinctly remember Kip Winger doing that gay shit with his guitar where he swings it around his body, I'm sorry I didn't point out exactly which member did it.

that being said, I always thought their music was pretty complex and intricate... for what it was. it was pretty obvious they could play.  I wasn't aware that they stuck it out all these years... Good for them, it gives me a newfound respect for them.

And I never said Neal Schon wasn't a talented musician or didn't take music seriously... I said he was a studio guy that put together a band. Your comments basically confirm exactly what I said. I don't know why are you are arguing with me

Same with Zep.

Worthy contenders:

Guns N Roses
Van Halen

Heavier Bands:

Black Sabbath
Tool
Metallica
Iron Maiden
Judas Priest

Kip never has/does swing his bass around his body. In ONE video from way, way back he lifts it up in front of himself while doing a slinkly rock god move. They were never "put together", either. Reb and Kip met each other at a session, hit it off and decided to attempt to write some material, together. Kip had some stuff, already, and Reb dug it and they kept at it. Then they figured they needed a drummer, etc. to bring the sessions to life.

Schon was never a studio guy. He was part of a backing band that Herbie Herbert used to pimp out in the Bay Area of San Francisco. Eventually Neal took the reigns and decided to just round it out and make a go of their own stuff. The first three records without Perry did zip, commercially. As another has said, Neal Schon began his pro music career life at 15 as a member of Santana's band. He was being courted by both Santana and Eric Clapton for his Derek and the Dominos project. He chose Santana because Eric was in the throes of his addictions.

Interesting. Neal, to me, possesses incredible feel and articulation, and he is one of the greatest lyrical soloists I've ever heard. As far as his tone, well, that's so very subjective, so fair enough.

Sorry to rub your nose in it arse face but you asked for it:

Def Leppard are one of only five rock bands with two original studio albums selling over 10 million copies each in the US. The others are The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Van Halen.

Dude, they had a good run in the 80s with Pyromania and Mtv. How in the world did you attach yourself to them this late in the game? They're a nostalgia act at this point.

Then how come they are still releasing new material? They've released 12 studio albums with a new one scheduled for next year. Explain that.

Doesn't really change anything, a lot of 80s bands have released new stuff. Its just not that relevant anymore. They had their time and its  over, has been for a long time. They're British Bon Jovi is all, face it, buddy.

Don't get me wrong, I really dug them in the 80s. In fact, Pyromania was one of the first cassettes I ever owned, and I played the shit out of it. Even saw them live when I was in high school. But to put them up there with the legends, or any of the hair bands for that matter, is just outrageous.

I liked a lot of silly hair bands back then; in hindsight, though, I had questionable taste.

Yes, definitely a guilty pleasure, though some of it I'd actually consider good (Crue, Faster Pussycat, Skid Row come to mind). But the real rockers were listening to Maiden and Metallica back then. I didn't catch up 'til later.

Shock, I actually saw Slayer in the early 80s, before I was even into rock really. Some chick took me to it on a date. Her brother played drums for the opening band, which was kind of a hair metal outfit. Then Slayer came on and people went nuts, scared the shit outta me. They covered Number of the Beast by Maiiden and I was convinced they were devil worshipers. Ha. I definitely wasn't ready for that shit.

This was in La Puente, CA in maybe '82/'83 at a Knights of Columbus Hall. Just a weekend gig for an up and coming LA band. I would have been so into it if it were 20 years later, but I was a f'n dork back then.

King's X, hell yeah. I've seen them a dozen times...back in the day.

It's hard to name 3, but KISS is one of the worst bands musically ever.  The fact they've sold over 100 million albums is a testament to how gimmicks can work,..if driven enough.

Metallica is pretty strong their first 5 albums, Floyd, Pantera, Muse, Sting, list goes on and on.
In the end, it's subjective...except for KISS...worst band ever.

Sarcasm = the lowest form of wit. You can laugh all you want about Def Leppard, but I find their music way more exciting and uplifting than The Black Crows' and most other rock bands. It's not their fault that by the end of the 1980s almost every American "hair metal" band had stolen their sound. Ask Brian May what he thinks of Def Leppard and also ask Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga what they think of them.

"Lyrically they write terrific songs, they have great hooks, great melodies. I think most other bands would love to do Leppard cast-offs if they could."

Steve Rosen, American music journalist

"They are regarded rightfully so as one of the key acts to come out of the eighties".

I actually like, more past tense, Def Leppard in the 80's but they fell off completely in the 90's.  Still enjoy the old stuff. Never really thought if them as a big influence on the other 80's bands but who knows.   A band that I liked in the early 80's, Quiet Riot, never gets any credit.

In the same way that Donny didn't wear boxers for years, because underwear was a thing of beauty, only to be admired from afar/within a bush on a washing line.

Myles has a great voice! Like him best with Alterbridge, Slash took him out on tour, heard him doing G&R and Velvet Revolver stuff, he sounded good! Liked Weiland the best with Velvet Revolver!
